Hundreds of thousands of America's dairy cows are being turned into hamburgers because milk prices have dropped so low that farmers can no longer afford to feed the animals.Dairy farmers say they have little choice but to sell part of their herds for slaughter because they face a perfect storm of destructive economic forces. At home, feed prices are rising and cash-strapped consumers are eating out less often. Abroad, the global recession has cut into demand for butter and cheese exported from the U.S.
Prices for milk now are...

2helenahandbasket,
I disagree about hormones and anti-biotics not changing the taste of milk.
As for pasturization, it is needed now because milk is shipped, not brought into the house from the barn.
We all drank the milk straight from the cows when I was a kid. We didn't know about pasturization, although the dairy across the field pasturized the milk that was sold.
I can definitly taste the difference between pasturized organic milk and pasturized non-organic.
When a cow is fed what it is supposed to eat, grass, and it is healthy, there's nothing wrong with the fresh milk. - 4 years ago

Considering the dietary habits of modern man (myself included), a genetically-modified cow that shoots Cheez Whiz out of its utters would be the God of a new religion.
Just a thought.

I'm totally confused. Last I checked a gallon of milk (organic) was costing me $6.30 at the grocery store.

Where do you live!
But then again...I am paying 3.19 for a half gallon of organic milk.
Haven't paid attention to regular milk prices. - 4 years ago

Well if the cows are slaughtered, then there will be less dairy producing cows, therefore less dairy, so less supply, so prices will rise, and they will then send fewer cows to the slaughter because their dairy will be worth more. Isn't this how economics works? It'll level out.

Most of the dairy farmers I knew in WI already made the switch a couple years ago. The price of milk in the stores may be high but the price the farmers get is quite a bit lower

That Dasterd. We could use those calves in High School for FFA. I could use a cow. That would be awesome. If it were male, I would call him Bender, if female, Wiggles.

I have known smaller dairy farmers in CA and they have always just kept their head above water.
I looks like they are beginning to drown.
Perhaps it is also because of the people here and in other countries are beginning to NOT want all of the crap in their milk and cheese.
BTW....I remember seeing the first milking machine when I was a kid. That was before growth hormones and anti-biotics. The milk tasted so good right out of the cows. - 4 years ago

It's illegal to sell milk straight from the cow. It's supposedly filled with disease causing bacteria and must be pasturized. Pasturization is what changes the taste of fresh milk, not hormones or antibiotics.

Could have fooled me... the price of milk is still insane. Since they are killing all the cows for hamburger we should expect to see a sharp decline in hamburger meat at least. But I doubt it... our dollar is almost devalued to $0.01 per dollar anyways. Wake up America.

The price of milk is insane, for sure, but it's not the farmer who's getting that price. The farmer gets mere pennies on the price per gallon. Most of the money goes to the middle men.

they should be getting enough money when it's cheaper to buy soy milk than it is to buy cow's milk!
it's sad when people don't get their hard earned money. - 4 years ago

Pretty sad news. I wonder how it is, however, for people who like to eat & buy locally especially from small farms. Is it easier for the smaller farms?
