GOP senator: 'If this is bipartisanship, the country's screwed'

bansheewail
Now that President Obama's stimulus package has been passed on largely party-line votes, arguments are breaking out about who was responsible for the lack of bipartisanship.

During a panel discussion on ABC's This Week, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) insisted that the Senate had been happy to accept Republican amendments to the stimulus plan. Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-SC), however, responded sourly, "If this is going to be bipartisanship, the country's screwed."

    • If the two party system can't share the wealth within a bill in the House and Senate what makes Americans think that they will actually share this stimulus with ordinary citizens. I weep for the masses and our President who has to put up with the bullshit of our representatives.

    • The "bi" in bi-partisanism answers the question. Both are to credit and blame for all successes and failures. All the more reason to aim for success.

    • Bipartisan is a joke, republican have such pathetic memories along with their fucked up ideals. I remember when they ran Congress and does anyone else remember when they changed bankruptcy laws and every democrat stepped up to mike and began to debate this and the speaker of house representative (a republican) and would bring the gavel down way before the democrat could get their first statement out. WE don't need any more republican rhetoric or failed ideas on how to fix their greatest proof of their stupidity gwb took office and sought to commit Treason!

    • You guys who still stand by the GOP...are you high? You must be if you cannot see the difference in terms of the economy between Bill Clinton's eight years and George Bush's eight years.... if you can sit at your computers and honestly say that the last eight years were better....then the only explanation is drugs.

    • Ding ding ding- Ihatethemall hit the nail on the head!

people need to quit blaming republicans and realize it was a joint effort to screw America. This "Stimulus" will fail. It is too much spending that will not generate enough jobs. Conservatives saw it, now all the Economists see it- the only people standing behind it are the Obama supporters. And as more unfolds- even the Lib's are realizing they screwed up. I know countless die-hard Obama fans that have since realized- he is wasting our money and should not be supported. Period. This could very likely turn our Recession into a Depression. And trust me- I HOPE IM WRONG!!

They all voted yes, but NOT 1 Legislator READ THE WHOLE THING. 1100 pages in 12 hours?
Have any of you die hard supporters ever sat down and talked with a Legislator face to face? They have no clue what they are talking about- they just propose bills and sign others to keep people happy... trust me, I try to lobby for various causes emphatically and if you can learn a subject before discussing it with a Legislator- you are probably just as informed if not more so then they are. They are just politicians, not experts but they are making the decisions experts NEED to be making.

      Wake up America.

Yes I do know what a "Stimulus" is supposed to do- and this won't do it. Not enough in the right places. This is fiscal policy that will fail to resolve recession. Just like all other fiscal policy that has failed to do so. And monetary policy won't work if its just to bailout the same people.

Online for weeks? Are you kidding? They adopted a final bill that was passed the next day. How is that online for weeks? You may have been able to see outlines and progression, but not the actual bill. On top of that, .pdf's aren't all that searchable my friend. Or viewable by all. Transparency my ass.

    • Neo is already making excuses for the bills failure. blaming it of course on the republicans. The dems could have put anything into the bill they wanted and they did. how could you blame the minority party for anything that goes wrong. They didnt even vote for it. Not until you people wake the hell up and realize that both parties are to blame for the problems we have will anything be fixed

    • The stimulus bill is so full of ridiculous and inappropriate tax cuts thanks to the Republicans, the bill is likely to fall far short of what is needed. In this case, bipartisianship means more of the same.

    • Where was Graham whan the Patriot Act and the TARP Bills were being shoved down our throats?? His theatrical obstructionist baffonery is shaming my great State of South Carolina. Dissent in the Bush Era was met with the echoing comment, "If you don't back the President, you must hate America and the troops, so you can just leave." Need I say more?
