200 to 300 dolphins beaching themselves on the shores of Manila Bay.

This is the first time so many stranded.
Is it human-induced?
"Pesticides and other aquatic toxins could play a role. Some dolphins have shown elevated levels of mercury contamination, may be becoming stranded as a direct consequence of mercury contamination which damages their neurological system.
They become potentially confused and disorientated, and strand themselves.
Similarly, toxic algal blooms (on the increase in recent years, likely due to agricultural fertilizer runoffs) may lead to epilepsy and behaviourial abnormalities in California sea lions. Even low-levels of chemical contamination can lead to these difficulties in marine mammals. And such persistent chemical pollution is pervasive in the ocean, even affecting the deep-sea cephalopods on which dolphins and whales feed.
Other factor could be sonar and other loud noises produced by ships in coastal waters and/or military exercises." By CL from planet doom.
Is it climate change?
Are dolphins trying to communicate something?
It is all so sad.

I believe this a direct repercussion from new forms of sonar developed for submarines and deep sea drilling a high pitched or low pitch sonar that we cant hear but is so disturbing to mammals such as dolphins and wales they are willing to beach them selves to get away from it. If it is in fact submarines they are not only hearting the ecosystem they are giving away there position to any government smart enough to watch for something like this.

This links to an article written by a retired marine mammal researcher. His theory is sea quakes, sadly ends the article by saying:
"Forty years of experience tells me it is too late to save the dolphins that were stranded on Manila Bay. They had been at sea for over 30 days without fresh water and food. They were weak and likely had a large parasitic burden and were unable able to rid themselves of these worms unless given large doses of antibiotics, which could have damaged their sensitive ears, resulting in fatal hearing impairment. Bottom line is that at this point, the dolphins that beached themselves on the bay stand zero chance of recovery."
It is his opinion, I choose to believe we are missing something important that causes this behavior.
Again pollution has activated a dysfunctional chain reaction with unexpected, dramatic and mysterious results at the end of the line.

Blaming Man for any random natural phenomenon, with or without reason, seems to be the fad of the day. The story at the link poses two possible causes for this isolated incident, neither of which is caused by Man:
"A sea quake that damaged the dolphins' eardrums is one possibility, officials say. Or they could have followed a sick or injured leader into the bay."
That's from National Geographic. I don't know who "CL from planet doom" is, so I'll assume that information is largely speculative.

Submarines do not emit any sound. They are designed to be completely silent, under water they are as detectable as a large group of shrimp. If the subs had any sonar they wouldn't crash into each other. The advanced sonar systems are on shore on military bases along the coast to detect enemies' submarines.
We are a society that will constantly need things. We value our lives over theirs. You eat their fish.
We are at the point of no return, the environments screwed, so be it. Us resourceful humans will skip past this "green" revolution and finally realize that there is nothing to do but make it work; and we will.

This is how third world dictators can tell where our "stealth" submarines are. They cause anomalies like this with their advanced sonar systems. Half a billion dollars to make subs invisible and everywhere they go they scare hundred of sea mammals out of the water. Irony

The solution would seem to be eradication.

A backyard swimming pool is vastly different from the ecological wonder of the ocean. There is no doubt that humans have wreaked havoc on the ecosystem, but please think logically.

Dolphins will often try to catch fish that swims just at the shoreline. They will catch a wave coming up on shore and do a flapping motion to sort of skim along the surface before the wave recedes. Its a dangerous maneuver thats hard to master for a lot of young dolphins. This could be a cause but there isn't much detail in this article.

This is so sad. I grew up about 20 minutes from the beach in South Florida, so I've heard stories about mammals beaching themselves, but I've never actually seen it. I know sometimes they beach themselves because they're sick and dying-- but is it our fault? Are people just saying it's natural? If humans are the cause, maybe people will start to take responsibility for how our pollution and neglectful actions are impacting the creatures we share the planet with.

Yeah phytoplankton can be very harmful to sea life. When phytoplankton recieve to much sun light and the increase in ocean temperatures causes them to produce an over abundance of blooms. The blooms are then released and float to the surface of the water. When doing this, the blooms remove all the oxygen from the water. This then kills off all the sea life in that area. In Corpus Christi we call this red tide. When the sea life dies of and washes up on the beach, it creates a terrible smell. Sonar is another possiblility as well as an earthquake.

Natgeo supplied a couple of possibilities.
The other scenarios are just as possible. The US Supreme Court gave the Navy the go ahead to use their sonar in simulations and exercises, even though it had been proved that whales and other sea creatures cold become disoriented and confused by the sounds.
Dolphins are near the top of the food chain. The higher up the food chain, the more poisons in the system, and mercury is just the beginning of the toxins.BTW...this was posted under another link a couple of days ago.
