Abstinence is 'not realistic' Says Bristol Palin on Fox News

Image
adamclarkestes
Sarah Palin has famously opposed sex-ed programs other than "abstinence education." Funny, then, that daughter Bristol was on Fox News tonight saying abstinence is "not realistic at all."

Bristol scheduled an interview with mom's pandering BFF Greta Van Susteren of Fox News. But she didn't tell mom until 24 hours before, probably because she was planning to personally insult Jesus, and the former Republican vice presidential nominee would not like it.

After describing the difficulty of being a teen mom, Britsol told Van Susteren abstinence is the best policy, but is not realistic because it's not the 19th Century any more, not even in Alaska...

    • They need to stop airing interviews of stupid people, when they don't answer the specific questions about their interview. She was asked multiple times what specifically happened and she dodged the question. People barely give a fuck in the first place.

    • Uh, why is she talking again??? Kinda hypocritical of her to sit there and say "having babies in your teens is bad" or "abstinence doesn't work", well obviously in your case it didn't. Go home and take care of your kid, kid.

    • Abstinence is unrealistic if one does believe it to be so but to the one who sees it as valuable and most protective, it is the best choice for a teenager.

    • Are the Palins a Harvard family or was that Brown? It must have been Yale... Boy oh boy, they are so articulate.

I can't wait for Sarah to run in 2012... I miss my Palin drinking games...

At least she has her daughters support on the issue of sex ed...

    • They should leave the poor girl alone. Nobody should be criticizing Sara Palin or her husband's parenting skills. Come on! I bet some of you came from religious families that wanted the best for you, just like mine, and i bet some of you just like me even though we were told of the advantages of abstinence, couldn't hold past 16. That does not make me or my parents hypocrits. It's true that "abstinence education only" is not realistic, but it should be an important part as birth control or profilactics are in sex education.

      very true.
i'm not disputing what she said or anything. i think if she had seen that question coming she would have had a better response; one that explains why it's not realistic. because of how she put it, it may be easy for the press to question her on many levels.

    • Are we nothing more than animals? Abstinence is a choice, and yes, young adults are mature and responsible enough to make that choice. Let's see----if I live my life based on my feelings and impulses, I could end up with a child, a disease, attachments to individuals that don't really have my best interest at heart. OR, I could fill my time with worthwhile activities and causes until I meet an individual that is like-minded, has the same goals that I do, and is willing to commit to a relationship that might get difficult in time, then I would reap the benefits of that choice. Sex is great, but has consequences. Abstinence education just wants to put the brakes on to allow children time to use their brains (not their hormones) until they grow up. Contraceptives don't prevent all pregnancies or diseases, and they never prevent heartbreak of a child that is too young to deal with relationships on that level.

    • Abstinence is the #1 way to prevent pregnancy and STDs that IS a fact, if you dont screw you wont have the repercussions.

That being said Bristol got it right in saying that while it is the only 100% method, it is unrealistic in application, kids do stupid things and kids do things they want to do, just telling them no wont stop them from having sex, so we might as well prepare the youth and protect them with good education and information on how to get protection.

    • in response to flalavin and a few others. I don't think she's trying to say absitinence is totally impossible. I think what she's saying is that it's unrealistic to teach only absitinence. Some people may be able to stay abstinent but many people won't and those people need information and need sex ed to be taught. It would be dangerous to only teach absitnence because I think that many of the topics discussed in sex ed will help teens make the right decision and would prevent a lot of people from jumping into sexual activities. The uneducated people are the ones more likely to dive into a sexual relationship blindfolded not knowing the danger they are in for having never been taught.

    • I don't think that the whole "scared straight" effect will stop pre-teens and teens from engaging in consensual sexual experimentation. In fact, in the wake of the tabloidization of that Spears girl's pregnancy, there was an alleged pregnancy pact: http://www.time.com/time/world/article/0,8599,1815845,00.html

This culture around making an example out of other people's decisions and consequences is ineffective!

Education needs to take a holistic approach to sex. Yes - explain that a lack of precaution can lead to disease or unwanted pregnancies. But, to give Bristol some credit, abstinence only education does not prevent experimentation or quell curiosity.

    • The kid made a mistake. The sad thing is that Republicans are such hypocrites. People are people from both parties, but they act holier than thou, and then when something does happen, they ignore their previous attacks on others and cash in on political gain for themselves. Palin continues to be a joke, actually considering a presidential run. The greatest fools are those who fool themselves.

    • Sex-ed or no sex-ed. Abstinence is TOTALLY possible. Like many other things we make a choice and want to blame it on some/one/thing else. First or twenty-first century, women and men have made choices. Ms. Palin did, as well as her boyfriend. Why don't we teach people to put "I" back in the equation? I choose sex. I choose NOT to abstain from sex. With choices come consequences. She wants to say now that abstinence is NOT an option... she's lying. It will always be an option. Take the responsibility. You like sex, you better like kids, or come up with a birth control option. You better be willing to have STDs and AIDS. If you like it that much (and we all know hormones are raging) then enjoy!

I don't like STDs or AIDs. I like sex. I have the latter but not the former.

Having sex does NOT equate contracting something horrible. At least not if you are informed.

Guys, abstaining from sex is a persons choice, yes, but the idea of preaching abstinence does not work. Why? Because those who chose NOT to abstain need to be given their options. When people say abstinence doesn't work they aren't saying "not having sex does not prevent you from..." they are saying TEACHING abstinence has proven time and time again to be an unreliable form of sex education and we need to make sure to educate our youth about other forms of birth control.

      Its not THAT complicated.

    • abstinence? This is a religious idea and should not be taught at any school anywhere. I believe in the school of science, and my biology says at 15 i should start bangin then who the hell is Palin or Bush to mess with my basic survival instincts? Use science be safe and bang

Biology actually says you should start "bangin" at 15 without protection (so that you can impregnate as many as possible). We've realized this is not the best way to exist as a society (recall recent articles on overpopulation).

Step back from the idea of abstinence as a religious teaching (which is debatable), and we can see that it, if followed, it would assist with overpopulation issues. I agree it's insufficient, but there's nothing that says we should have as much sex as possible (protected or unprotected).

Sorry, had to. But yes, its proven teachinga bout contraceptive is more efficient than the right wing propaganda BS about abstinence.

BTW, for all you god fearin folks - i have premarital sex with my boyfriend and i haven't been smited down yet. Actually have ai pretty damn good existence. Abstinence from sex is like telling a heroin addict to "just say no" .....both are sure to fail.

Gotta side with Bamboo on this one. Abstinence does not work BECAUSE it is unrealistic. There is no right or wrong way to abstein from having sex beside... well NOT HAVING IT. Which, because its UNREALISTIC for teens, does NOT work lol.

      Simple.

OH the only thing you get from teaching abstinence only is teen mothers like bristol who don't understand contraceptives or are too scared to use them because either a) Sarah Palin taught you god will kill you if you use it or b) you're too scared to go to PP because you feel ashamed.

People who promote abstinence only alternatives are naive and ill informed.

I remember taking sex-ed for the first time when I was twelve and having the crap scared out of me after seeing that video. You know, that video with the pictures of guys' penises that says, "this is what herpes looks like... this is what syphilis looks like..."

Let's get real folks. Kids will be kids. Just ask the twelve year old in England.

ANd yes. I remember when we still had sex ed. Now its not mandetory, but the videos of women pushing out kids and of the diseases definitely made me not only want to wait a bit longer BUT made me very adament about PROTECTION.

Telling kids the consequences of sex won't prevent them, but showing them the conequences and explaining how to provent them, even i fyou aren't abstaining - way more efficient.

I didn't want to say anything harsh about Bristol, because it was her mothers choice to put her in the public eye before, but, sex ed advice from Bristol Palin.
Please. Most of us understand that sex usually leads to babies. Most of know that it hard to be a teenage mother. Maybe this wouldn't be such a newsflash to Bristol Palin if she was taught some sex ed. (thanks fox news for being us such cutting edge news stories) I am glad said one thing, "Abstinence is not realistic". Now maybe some of the abstinence only education will go away, and replaced with some real education on sex.
Now, Bristol, how about getting yourself a college education?
