Robbie Tolan dreamed of following in the footsteps of his father, retired Major League Baseball outfielder Bobby Tolan. But in the early morning of Dec. 31, 2008, those dreams may have ended in a confrontation with police in affluent, predominantly white Bellaire, Tex. Wrongly suspected of stealing his own car, Tolan and his cousin were detained at gunpoint by police on the doorstep of his family's home. A moment later, Robbie Tolan's parents watched as their son was shot in the chest by a police officer. In an extended report, host Bryant Gumbel examines this disturbing case and interviews the Tolan family as they speak out for the first time about race and the night that changed everything.

this story was such utter BS, i'm from that area of houston, born and raised... there is no profiling, there is no racism... we follow the SIMPLEST set of rules down in texas, rules that the rest of the country, for whatever reason, just can't seem to grasp. When a cop is addressing you, you do exactly as he says and NOTHING else... all there needs to be is a series of yes sirs and no sirs in order to get through the situation. Don't do anything they did not ask you to do, do not argue, let them finish their investigation, and just DO AS THEY SAY... is that so freaking hard? Why id there the need to challenge, to be a rebel, to mouth off, to question... THOUSANDS of people get pulled over in bellaire, black, white and mexican every year in bellaire and follow the rules and get off without a single problem... Bryant gumble is such an idiot... and the naacp??? are you kidding me? they are about as credible as the aclu... the cops out there do an incredible job... i've lived all over this nation and have NEVER felt more safe as I do in the Houston area... 10 min into the interview the kid admits arguing with the cop from the get go... but because of gumble, this fact is glazed over and barely mentioned... all he had to do is comply, let the cops do their job, and they would have realized their mistake upon rerunning the plates... life is so easy if you just follow the rules... people that disagree with me ask the question "why should I?" or "why do I have to?" and my answer is "because that rebel $hit will get you nowhere in life my friend..." in fact, it may get you shot down in texas, and that fact keeps us safer from criminals than the majority of the rest of the country, and we like it that way and could absolutely care less what the rest of the country thinks, if you don't like it, stay your a$$ outta texas... especially you gumble
