Atlantis found?

It shows a perfect rectangle the size of Wales lying on the bed of the Atlantic Ocean nearly 3½ miles down.
A host of criss-crossing lines, looking like a map of a vast metropolis, are enclosed by the boundary.
They seem too vast and organised to be caused naturally.
And last night the possibility of an extraordinary discovery had oceanographers and geophysicists captivated.
The site lies 620 miles off the west coast of Africa near the Canary Islands — a location for Atlantis seemingly suggested by the ancient philosopher Plato.
He believed it was an island civilisation sunk by an earthquake and floods around 9,700BC — nearly 12,000 years ago.
The “grid” showed up on Google Ocean, a Google Earth extension that uses a combination of satellite images and marine surveys.

It is so real, I could feel the lost souls of Atlantis as I swam above it last week.

It's a bit lengthy but interesting. Provides background into the Minoans and Phillistines(bottom of page). My response is, could be. No clear evidence at this time. Just broken pottery, jewelry and such. There is such evidence to prove now that the Ancient Hebrews were in the Sinai. They left their graffitti inscribed on the rocks leading inland from Egypt.

Oi oi oi.
It probably isn't even manmade.
If something sank due to geological reformation a distance of 3.4 MILES to the bottom of the ocean, there is no way it would remain intact in any recognizable form.
I doubt that it's even man-made.

... this being atlantis or whatever? I don't really see the appeal in ancient stories that seem more or less legend only. afterall isn't atlantis supposed to be an entire contentent? and no there can't be confusion in translations or anything because even plato, and whomever he may have gotten the story from, knew the difference between a contenent and an island.

It doesn't correspond to the description of Atlantis, so I doubt it is Atlantis. It could be some other sunken city.

Folks, the MOST substantial inkling of Atlantis was conceived in Plato's Republic in which case Atlantis served as a theoretical idealized society that he concocted to help persuade his own rhetoric. While it did give name to such things as the Atlantic Ocean, it is widely believed to be pure fiction.

Yeah right... I scaled this "city" on google earth and found it to be about 90 miles square with city blocks 11 miles x 8 miles. That can't really be classified as a city. I've seen similar patterns in the wrinkles on the back of my hand. This is a natural formation created by plate tectonics. Maybe Atlantis was an island formed by the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, but I doubt it would have sunk so deep.

It is easy to see that this post has passionate opinions on both sides. Just a quick reminder that we all must consider Current.com's community standards when posting http://current.com/s/community_standards.htm
Current encourages debate and we want to hear both sides of the story - in a reasoned manner.Thanks.

in the west atlantis was a nation of advanced sailors back in the time of the minoans who I believed were based in modern day santorini. there was a huge volcanic eruption dated to about the time that wiped out nearly the entire island. I mean like, gone but for some rocks and a tiny shred of the island and volcano. These people were important to the various cultures because they traded goods yada yada so I'm sure them suddenly disappearing was noteworthy. And greeks do like their myths.
dunno, that's the explanation that's most feasible to me.

uh yeah, for one this is from the SUN which I wish people would stop posting as news from that rag and second this is nothing new you can find a couple of sites like this found already. It is also more widely believe that Plato wrote Atlantis as s story and an allegory of what he was seeing in Greece at the time as it was part of a much large dialogue of Plato's.

Atlantis has already been found off the coast of cuba. Go look it up. It was found by the US navy with submarines during the cuban missle crisis. It's not something they want people to know about because they have already recovered ancient yet highly advanced "machines" from it.

At 3.5 miles down there is hardly any light...
How can they take a picture of that large of an area with so little light...

Who said they used light?Regardless of The Sun sucking, satellites can easily peer under the water.

we do have maps of the ocean floor. and you're right, light (in the frequencies we use) doesn't make it down more than a few meters... however radar can make it to the ocean bottom.
satilites aren't good enough for detailed resolution beyond a meter or so... but a boat skimming across the surface can get enough detail from radar to disern fish from trash. this is how 'fish finders' work. its old WWII technology.
also aside from radar we can use sonar... we can't "see" in sound but we can compute it all into an image visible to human eyes. just like the ultrasound technology used in medicine.
