Paper apologizes, to some, over Obama cartoon

After two days of protests, the paper posted an editorial on its Web site Thursday saying the cartoon was meant to mock the federal economic stimulus bill, but "to those who were offended by the image, we apologize."

The New York Post should think things through before they print them. It was a poor lack of judgement on their part.

"Dave Chappelle, Family Guy, and the New Yorker Cartoon are racially insensitive." - They all go over the line sometimes (I mean,I guess- I'll give you the New Yorker cartoon but Dave and Family Guy are so blatent about what the joke is.)
"How many times has Jesus Christ or some other religious figure been desecrated on Current? It's hilarious every time I see it, but I recognize it's in bad taste and deeply offensive to some people. Yet, it's tolerated by the Current community. Can you explain how this cartoon is any different?" I think there is a difference between simply making fun of someone and it taking a racial tone, or something that ends up having a racial tone even if it wasn't intended. Another difference is that this is a website with all kinds of crazy videos, pictures, stories, etc, while that was the NY Post. Having said that, when really questionable material surfaces on Current or a post starts causing a lot of hateful comments, the community calls it out and the staffers deal with it. Same thing here; the NY Post got called out on their shitty editing skills.

There's a huge difference between being racist and racially insensitive.
Dave Chappelle, Family Guy, and the New Yorker Cartoon are racially insensitive.
The KKK, the judicial system and law enforcement are racist. The difference is that one pokes fun at our differences while the other aims to subjugate people.
Protesting this cartoon won't change anything. You'd be no different than the Muslims who were protesting the cartoon of Mohamed. Can you see the parallel?
How many times has Jesus Christ or some other religious figure been desecrated on Current? It's hilarious every time I see it, but I recognize it's in bad taste and deeply offensive to some people. Yet, it's tolerated by the Current community. Can you explain how this cartoon is any different?

You know when Bush was compared with a monkey it was funny, really funny but when a cartoon chimp is obviously portrayed as the president and SHOT DEAD how is that funny and worthy of a cartoon. Get friggin real, real friggin fast or the shit will hit the fan and there are more of us than there are of you racist pigs.

I understand what they were going for in the cartoon, but you have to be stupid not think that it also conveys other meanings, even unintentional meanings. That's what editors are for right? I think they should be fired because it's quite an embarrassment for them.

Many people aren't buying this so called apology and neither am I. I made it clear on the original post that I thought the cartoon was indeed racists and in the VERY LEAST was socially insensitive. The "Gee, Bush was called a chimp too!" argument is extremely weak, as is the argument that since Obama didn't write the bill, there's no connection- Obama was the FACE of the stimulus package to the public! He is the President, so people connect anything going on in the government to him.
Their apology is BS.

Agreed, It's more like a forced disclaimer. It was utterly tactless for them to print that "cartoon".

Some things you can do, and some things you just can't. If someone made a cartoon of Bush in blackface, mocking the issues of Hurricane Katrina victims, would that be considered racist? You bet your ass.
If the terms "porch monkey" or "bushbaby" did not exist, then hell yeah, go ahead and compare President Obama to a chimp. Since those terms do exist, you just can't make that comparison. Period.
Sure, they may not have intended that meaning, but that doesn't mean that the meaning isn't there. Its called tact, and they know it was wrong.
That is also why one can compare the absolutely ludicrous facial expressions of former President Bush to those of chimps, but doing so with President Obama is in poor taste.I can't believe that someone even has to explain that.

your telling me if you were an editor of a major newspaper you would look at this and not see anything to be concerned about?
well good for you because maybe that means you think with a racial free mind? But that's impossible unless you were raised in a cave or are just plain stupid.
But ill settle on the possibility that you are smart but you strangely like to tell people to get a life any chance you can.

This whole issue is bs.
Interpreting the cartoon as racism is a stretch.-Obama didn't write the stimulus bill.
-An escaped chimpanzee was shot by police earlier that week. The cartoon was playing off that event.
There's tons of racism in America that needs to be addressed- like the judicial system for one.
But chasing after this phony bs just belittles the issue of racism and creates a further racial divide. - 2 years ago

Saying "to those who were offended by the image, we apologize," is not the same as apologizing for the content. To me that is even more incendiary because they still don't think they did anything wrong. The cartoon is extremely racist and it's offensive to the poor woman who got attacked by the rabid chimp in CT.

They didn't do anything wrong. Some folks are just too thin skinned and look for slights in every occurrance.

.....for the longest time here in America it was "okay" to depict black Americans as "apes" and "chimps".... The people who approved that ad thought it would not meet any resistance to that type of racial depiction......
These people are the dinosaurs that need to die off... they are racist and that is exactly what this is and any one who says different are lying through their teeth...
... why not do something different why the depiction of our President as a " chimp" being shot by white police men..... they knew exactly what they were saying....
