Dopers' double standard

Michael Phelps suffers because of recreational marijuana, but A-Rod gets away with performance-enhancing steroids?

"February has been a less-than-stellar month for US sports types. First, New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez admitted to using illegal performance-enhancing steroids for a period of three years because of "an enormous amount of pressure to perform." At the time, Rodriguez was the highest-paid player in baseball, having signed a 10-year, $252m contract with the Texas Rangers. It's hard not to crumble under that kind of pressure. So A-Rod, as he is known around these parts, juiced up his talent with substances you cannot purchase at the local vitamin shop."

    • Personally i'm in favor of performance enhancing drugs. If there were some drugs that made me work faster and more efficient i'd take them in a heartbeat.
If your not cheating your not trying hard enough to win.

Or at least you should be allowed to take something if your over 32 to help your body recover faster after injury.

But if you want to be a stickler for the rules it does seem as if A-rod is getting off easier for something that actually (may have, it still takes talent not muscles to hit a ball) made a difference on the competition field. And that does seem a bit unfair

    • Yeah good ol A-rod is a damn millionaire over-paid for what to hit a damn ball with a stick and field a ball hit to him. So he had to take performance enchancing drugs to live up to his million dollar check. He did it for himself not for anyone else. He wanted to be te best but he couldn't do it by himself. Half the people out there work hard to get to the top but get over shadowed by the people who cheat and get off lightly. He gets to keep his millions he got his money.

    • More American Puritan bull. A-rod was using to enhance performance. He gets a free ride. Phelps was using to enhance pleasure. Puritans cant stand anyone enjoying themselves thats why they came to America to begin with. The best way to prevent someone from enjoying pleasure is to control them politically which is how we ended up with the government we have today.

    • I think yall are getting the wrong message.

This article is showing that people were not shocked, nor did they care that the richest (that's a lot more money than any athlete deserves) baseball player used steroids (basically a cheat, and a drug that can kill you while use, but if it doesn't it definitely shortens the amount of years you have to live). But when the most talented swimmer that's ever walked the planet uses a harmless weed from the earth's soil... Hysteria!

    • wrabon,

not that i disagree that a-rod should be punished and phelps should be hailed, but truthfully, at the time of a-rod's doping, the use of steroids were not against the MLB rules, whereas in phelps case, the use of pot is and was at the time he smoked it, against the IOC rules of competition.

once again, i believe strongly in the full legalization of pot, and i also think phelps shouldn't be suspended, fired from contracts, or publicly scrutinized for his recreational use of pot.

so, yes, i agree there is a double standard.

and the best part of it all is that a-rod's doping was CHEATING, while phelps use of pot has no comparable performance enhancing qualities, relative to steroids.

      iammyfathersson,

you're totally correct. i was just specifically referring to their rules of competition since we don't know if a-rod will face charges yet.
