Student Newspaper in "Snails" Protest

Protests have been held outside the Student's Union at the University of Manchester following ongoing complaints that the University newspaper "Student Direct". Earlier last year the LGBT Society managed to secure the first "gender-neutral" toilets on campus, hoping to create a space space for all women as well as transgender people. Comments and editorials in Student Direct were accused of being homophobic and transphobic as a result.
The Union's LGBT Secretary , Frankie McGough accused Susannah Birkwood, as editor of Student Direct as being ultimately responsible for what has published in the paper which has a circulation of 60,000 readers. Frankie told Queer News:
"We feel that Susannah Birkwood should therefore be held accountable for the numerous offensive, discriminatory and slanderous articles published this academic year. Susannah Birkwood, as editor of Student Direct, is ultimately responsible for what is published therein."
