The most common excuse is traffic, followed by a lack of sleep and getting children ready for school or day care, said the survey conducted for CareerBuilder.com, an online job site.
Other frequent excuses are problems with public transportation, wardrobe issues or dealing with pets, it said.
One in 10 workers said they are late to their jobs at least twice a week.
Tardiness is on the rise, the survey said. In this poll, 20 percent said they were late at least once a week. In a similar one taken a year earlier, 15 percent said so.

Funny how people complain about having to show up on time, while they still have a job. If you really care, you would make it happen. Quit whinning America and get to work, our laziness is what has put us in this position, both about what goes on around us and how competitive we are making our companies. If people took a little pride in what they did like our parents and grandparents, I doubt we would be in this boat.

I live in LA, drive 33 miles EACH way everyday to and from work, and I am rarely ever late. I like sleep as much if not more than the next person, but it's about being a responsible adult and getting up to get your ass to work. Just like dustan_e said, wake up early(er) and you have nothing to complain about.
Is it really that hard?!?!?!

Motivation is the key to waking up early.... what better is there than to just wake up early than to set your mind upon something you have in mind, that you want to get to throughout the day, by the way Dustan_e, poor people have way much knowledge than you will have, why do you think they just chose to poor? From being power-hungry of course! This is why YOU are uninformed about the world around you....Amusing human you are, pathetic......

sometimes it pays to get the sleep you NEED. sleep is treated as a WANT in american society.

I'm always late. And have an excuse for all seasons in winter I say my car door key thingy is frozen, in spring it can't start, in summer I ran out of gas so I have to go to the gas station, in fall well I'm just late and their gonna have to deal with it! I can't get fired. I'm night shift and well we all know how many people are jumping at the opportunity of that shift. And anyways everyone likes me. ^_^ BUT I never miss work. So that’s a plus. And I always, if asked, stay for a few extra hours if need be. It's all about balance.

FYI: Time is the most used noun in the English language. The concept of dividing time and parsing it into smaller and smaller pieces is a modern concept. After Einstein, our entire concept of time changed. no longer are we waking to the sound of crows cackling on the farm fences, or waking w/ sunrise. We are always out of time, need more time, and never on time. I am no Johnny Punchclock myself, and the only time I look forward to is spending it with my partner, my friends and family,...and for that,..I am never late.

lmao - this just proves my point....even if photochick DID work while raising kids it was obviously a different era considering how old the children are now. Most surprising is that photochick is so unwilling to concede that even responsible people are sometimes late. That's life! How does that make photochick a better person? Get your head on straight.

I think it has a lot to do with people trying to fit to many things into their schedule. With both parents working, or even worse single parents working, it is very hard to take care of children and prepare for work. So many of us say to ourselves, "Well, I can wait a couple minutes and get this one last thing done before I head out the door." Then we wonder how we didn't make it on time.
Otherwise, motivation has a lot to do with it as well. When your job seems to be meaningless, you don't associate importance with what you're doing, and you end up giving that job less significance in your management of time. Especially when you look at your paycheck and see a massive chunk of it going to a federal government running programs you don't support.

Barbara, I'm the same generation as you. I also raised 3 sons who now have families of their own. One is in Iraq right now. Being on time for people is just a habit that they can make. Its being responsible. And no, mommy and daddy don't do anything for me anymore. I took care of both of them before they passed away. And, by the way, being on time was one of the better qualities I got from them!!

Yes, but were you working 2-3 jobs like I've had to do? You say "just get up earlier" what a laugh. Up at 6, not even back from work/school till well after 10pm, still have to take care of home, and maybe get a few hours of sleep. Maybe I should just give up sleeping, whaddya think? Don't you feel safer knowing how many people are completely sleep-deprived on a regular basis? You say "Being on time is just a habit..." and yes it is, but when you are completely exhausted from a barely-making it routine, and ONE THING GOES WRONG (flat tire, late bus, broken dryer) it throws the whole routine, and guess what, you lose more sleep. IF WAGES KEPT UP with the cost of living I WOULDN'T HAVE TO WORK AS MUCH!! But no, the employers pay crap, and work you to death. How much loyalty and consideration do you owe a slavemaster?

dustan and photochick have probably no one else to take care of and/or mommy and daddy do everything for them (similar to fat and lazy without the fat dustin). My son went to Vanderbilt then Emory and he got out and played SEC baseball, did things in the community so why are you STUCK in Columbia??? got a bike? He did his first year. No cars allowed for freshmen.
the point is you will find out sooner or later....you are up early, one child poops diarrhea and the other spits up on you or has a temper tantrum. There are bills to pay , homework, you name it.
Yep, was easy for me in college....I raised 3 boys, went to Nursing School and worked part time, helped them throw a paper route for spending money at 3am for 3 years... all at the same time. And was rarely late.
The boys all got into great colleges , have great careers.
Until you do all that my friends, give the parents a break from your self righteousness.

So what? Few people have the luxury of a 40 hour week these days so who gives a flying rat's a** if you're a few minutes late? Get up early? I agree with reblnews - you two obviously don't have a clue.

I have to agree with dustan on this one. Just get up earlier! Excuses go only so far. If you want people to treat you like a grownup you have to act like one. I bet these people can be on time to something that is worth something to them. All you are doing by being late for work is exposing yourself as someone who can't even manage time. That's pathetic. Who on earth is going to give you something important and responsible to do? And we all know that important and responsible work = $$$$

Americans are just fat and lazy. I have listed a cure for all said problems.
Stuck in traffic: Wake up early.
Getting children ready: Wake up early.
Getting children to daycare: Wake up early. (most decent daycares open at 5am.)If you are the type that does not like to wake up early you could try going to bed early. IF thats too hard then you are just a problem and do not deserve to work anyways.

You look about twelve years old, what would you know about being responsible for other people? Kind of hard to go to bed early when one is staying up all night doing freelance jobs to make ends meet. You obviously do not live in the REAL world. One day you will be a grown up and you will understand.

I am highly amused by the comments left here. Thanks everyone. Your crying and bitching made my day. Now I'm off to spend (blow) around 1,000 dollars on video games, booze, porn and perhaps a hooker of color (black) so I can tell her all my racist jokes then degrade her further by sexing her while she says " I'm your slave baby! I'll pick your cotton!" And I can do all this because my parents are very wealthy and I have a big allowance. Take that you poor people.

This problem is serious. I have 3 grown sons and 2 have children under 4 (2 children each). Both moms are putting off careers until the kids get a little older.
As a nurse I see this as a Major health issue! my husband is 70 and works 50-60 hrs a week but he is in terrific health. I am 12 years younger and can barely keep up with him. Never drank or smoked. I love a good martini and would love pot IF it was legal. Opposites attract I guess...married 37 years.
I know, we are couch potatoes on the w/ends . Don't want to go any where but recently started movie and dinner once a week and that is healthy too to get outside the box we all live in. GET SOME SLEEP. It affects our immune systems badly.

I don't have a set time to be in to work as long as I come in 40 hours per week. Still, I personally feel "late" if I show up after 9am. I only live a mile from work, so commuting isn't an issue; most of the time I just don't have the energy to get up with the alarm. It normally takes me 30 minutes to get ready, but lately I've hit the snooze button for an hour first just because I'm so damn tired. I end up sleeping almost all weekend just to function during the week. Not worth it! I need new time management skills!

Other countries laugh at us and call us "clock watchers" in Saudi Arabia. I used to work with a person who went there to work a while. They said you could always identify an American by the way they ran around looking at their watches. Been there and done that too but always put my children first. We are failing our kids here and it shows on the news daily.

I am not surprised. When exhausted people go to bed late after supper, homework, bath times and chores. They wake up to fixing breakfast, dressing fussy children and everyone lives such a hectic life. If both parents work, it is even worse with conflicting schedules. When my children were little, we took a huge cut in pay for me to stay home the first year. It was good for my children , my husband and I felt in more control than just dropping my kids off somewhere and not being able to guide their care.
Unfortunately, we are learning in this society that our "wants" have exceeded the value of our children and people don't want to lose that salary for one to stay home or simply can't afford it. Sometimes, when you do the math, you are paying out more in expensive child care, gas, clothes, etc. than taking in.
Then there are just the "slackers", lol.
