Do TV commercials make you happier?

Image

According to a surprising new study, commercial interruptions often enhance television enjoyment, at least for younger viewers.

According to the researchers, it all boils down to a behavioral trait called "adaptation." Basically, adaptation predicts that even positive experiences become less enjoyable over time. Prior studies have shown that the longer people live in an enjoyable place, consume their favorite ice cream, and listen to their favorite song, the intensity of their happiness declines.

Along these lines, the longer viewers continuously consume a television program, the less intensely they enjoy the experience.

I can totally relate to this concept. It's delayed gratification. You have to earn the good television by sitting (or Tivo-ing) through the commercials.

That being said, TV commercials (and especially VCAMs - Viewer Created Ad Messages) can also be entertainment in and of themselves. Our research says that Current TV viewers prefer VCAMs over traditional ads 9 to 1. What do you think?

    • over the last 30 years, commercials have almost doubled, from 4 to 7 minutes in a half hour show. even on sat .. history channel .. discovery science .. we are not immune, from being inundated.

when "Vince" says .. in the next 20 minutes, cause we can't do this all day .. we know he is lying. when he says, you'll love my nuts, that, is incredibly funny.

whatever happened to the "Cleo" awards??

i'd rather have "vince" lye to me, about "the next 20 minutes" .. that hear mr fat whinney guy yell about ox-y clean, or the progressive lady .. too a horn, like some girl, that rode to school on the short bus. the latter, is just the dumbing down of america.

and like Bose .. it they advertise That much .. they are making sooo much money, that they can afford to innundate us with commercials, that aren't even honest enough, to advertise a price.

perhaps ... pARK avenue .. like wall street .. has had a total friggen meltdown. if i wanna get blown by progressive .. better have a tongue preircing bb. allstate .. where is my rebate .. ur $118 higher than the lizzard for the same coverage.

for years .. the cleo's always favored commercials from europe .. and no wonder. i do have to differentiate .. from the "info-mercials" .. like those by GE and BP. GE should be building a de-salination plant for LA.. not a maglev from disy to vegarupt.

disclaimer .. i was subcontracted to GE in '86, for Tokaii II 7th R&M, in 1986. but, i am not a stakeholder in any of the above mentioned entities.

the auto insurance adds .. in california, are waay over the top .. and probably the most abusive in the history of commercial advertiseing. i used to market a stepper drive globally, by a similar name, to supplement my offerings. soo .. while i do think the latest gieco offering as being very humorous .. the ceo-falling on lizzard trust thing .. after about 3 viewings .. even that gets old.

as with my first posting on this thread .. i still am ammused, by the capitol one norseman ads, and the e-trade adds. in the next twenty minutes .. i better buy something from vince, but i have limited time, to choose between sham-wow, and his nut-chopper. this guy, could easily run for governor of the state of illusions .. he lies .. we know that.

congrats on your marrige vince .. tc always, and
      God Bless

    • Look! Another article about how people enjoy commercials. Maybe we are all 'online people' who don't understand the majority of Americans....

    • Any study that claims a beneficial effect of commercials on mood is definitely biased: either the methodology is plain wrong, or the authors are financed by TV companies and haven't declared "conflict of interests". But maybe I'm biased, since I hate commercials.

    • i can relate to the whole needing ads to appreciate good telly thing, but ads making people happy is a big leap away from that. only really good ads are enjoyable to watch.

    • i hate commercials, what a waste of human intelligence!
big companies giving the public a view on what they think our reality is, a materialistic shiney place where everyone has a brand new car, silky hair and 'NATURAL LOOKING' skin. - how can it be nautral looking if by whacking this cream on it stops the ageing process?

    • Current .. should really do a poll on this. And the advertisers should take note.

Not pulling any punches here. Some comercials are so insidiously annoying .. i don't care it they are giving away free pussy .. i will change the channel. That high pitched whiney fat-assed guy .. did oxy-clean and such .. is hanging still legal in this country? Like a fat-assed woody allen on vocal steroids.

The "Progressive Auto Insurance" ads, were barely acceptable for romper room, untill the "horn" thing lately. man ... talk about dumb and dumber.

Allstate .. all lies i guese ... if i could save $535 with them, they would owe me about $104 a year, and i drive a 4 ton F-350 CC 4x4 7.3L long bed.

Bose`. They took concepts known 40 years ago, put it into plastic (the "Gowe" enclosure) .. don't even tell you the price .. but you can "ask" for thier credit terms. I built a couple about 45 years ago, from plans in popular electronics. While i may have mispelled his name .. he is/was, an Englinshman. I know they work, Bose` but waaay over-advertised.

auto-makers. i could write a book. gm is professional grade? virtually all the premium first-responders ambulances in the united states, are based on the e-350 chasis. that's because, they work. no bola. E-350 is the one ton Ford chasis. Ford .. hasn't taken a dime one from the taxpayers, and won't have to.

I don't drink Bud .. before or after inbev buy .. but they did have a really funny clip .. animated .. old horse bumping the tree .. snow falls on a bunch of young punk snow-ballers.

gotta say .. the Capital One clips with the Norseman, are really well done .. and always good for a chuckle .. over and over. You've seen them before .. know what to expect .. and still laugh. mabe they touch on a chord that most of us wish we could aspire to .. in fantasy. totally irreverant .. funny stuff.

top pick .. has to be e-trade. absolutely hilarious .. baby and his blackberry. absolutely priceless. the latest one, has about 8 kids .. so it is evolving. while e-trade is perhaps more market specific, like on bloomberg, the capital-one, and e-trade commercials, are always welcome .. and if happiness is a chuckle or laughter .. then they qualify.

    • I really don't watch much varied programming, but when I do watch television, the large bulk of it is sports related....football and basketball, pro and collegiate. Recently watching condensed replays of games in fractions of the time of actual game-time didn't give me near the enjoyment of watching games with commercials. The commercials give me time to digest the recent play and events and give me pause for what might transpire next. I don't know if the same holds for sitcom television, but I can see it holding for dramas. I feel the human brain seeks out logical-based obstacles in everyday life by nature. That's 90% the reason I dig fantasy football and rpg's. I am a strategy game fan. Marketing is a strategy in and of itself.

    • What makes a better ad in the following choice, and why:
the one that wins awards, but does not make a sale; or the one that shows no intellectual/creative plan, but sales?

    • I hate commercials. ALL OF THEM! They warp young peoples minds and train them to be consumers.

Why do we subscribe to cable television and then have to watch all that shit! Isn't the cable company making enough money off subscriptions?

    • Comercials made me stop watching TV. Its getting to the point where I can barely stand the Internet for all its ads. Current is quickly approaching banned status for me...

Agreed. Can't stand commercials. They're the reason I can't get myself to watch virtually any prime time/ ad-ridden TV live. IFC & Current (low commercial interruption) is about it for me, with torrents and someday DVR for everything else.

No problems with ze internets, though. I/everygeek recommend Firefox with Adblock Plus (EasyList) enabled.

Question I've been asking a lot of people lately... Would you be willing to pay cash money for overarching subscription services that eliminate the need for ads? Cable bills would increase substantially in order to cover the cost of producing good television, but TV ads would all but disappear.

    • Couldn't tell ya,... I rarely watch commercials. God bless you, DVR!!!
On the other hand,... my rage that is induced by LOST can sometimes be quelled by some stupid ads.

    • I like the research that shows that even beyond the merits of the ad itself, people need "refresh time" in order to keep their focus and enjoyment on the programs they're watching.

I've definitely noticed that when watching shows on DVD/TiVo, they seem to drag on longer, and it's harder to stay watching for as long as when there's a solid block of live TV I'm interested in...

Speaking of cool ads, if you want to potentially get paid to make your own ad, which will always be interesting to watch (for you at least, hopefully others!), you should go to http://current.com/vcam

    • I like all the funny commericals that have something funny in it, other than that every other commerical says "Call NOW" or "Millions of Americans have already.." i dislike those things, makes me feel like a consumer.....Geico The Caveman vs. The Geico Gekko .....And the Caveman wins!

    • If it's funny or clever, I don't mind watching commercials. I particularly like Geico's new "stack o' money with googely eyes" sketch. It's weird and catchy. Perfect.

    • I feel that a lot of commercials being aired today tend to have qualities similar to viral videos, making them more enjoyable to watch. Remember those old Ovaltine commercials? (which surprisingly still air to this day!) Nobody wants to see that interrupt their favorite television show. But on the other hand, that Skittles commercial with the singing rabbit was something I could watch repeatedly and had to show all of my friends! I was aware that this was absolutely ridiculous, but somehow I found myself wanting to see it more and more, like the 500 times we've all seen the "I like turtles" kid.

I think the combination of "delayed gratification" and this new breed of commercials is what makes the interruptions more enjoyable/tolerable.
