Indianapolis' Libertarian City-Councilor Booted Out

Image

Ed Coleman, City-Councilor of Indianapolis, was kicked out of his position. Both Democrats and Republicans voted to boot him out of all committees. What did he do wrong? Mr. Coleman left the Republican Party in February of this year, and switched to the Libertarian Party. He was booted out during an "executive session," to prevent public comment.

It appears that the Republicans and Democrats would like to preserve their duopoly.

    • Everyone is waking up to realize Obama and Mccain are the wrong direction for the country and by the midterm elections you will see more third parties making in roads especially when the DOW is around 1500 and they try to make a one global bank with the IMF and the UN controlling everything

    • thank you timothyjmaguire....so he was voted out based on the fact that they did not do a background check prior to him being appointed......Who's fault was itthat there was no background check done?? Why can't they just do the background check and then base their decision on the results?? Why did they not respond publicly?? I still feel this was a purposeful move on the part of the local politicians to keep the "power" in their own hands.....Libertarian party membership grew by 65% in NJ alone last year....Lets use our power of vote and get real people in these positions.

      Actually, the background checks was something completely different...the council gets to appoint a lot of members to lower level government boards. Separate from that duty, this committee gets to appoint members to the other Council committees. They gave no official reason for ousting him from any committee, at least not on the record.

    • The real story behind this was that the citizens did stand up. There was request after request that something be done about Coleman and his use of constant, obstructionist tactics and sensationalism.

      Even the local news media described him as such.

      Hey Tim, aren't you one of the local Libertarian Party leaders here or do I have you confused with someone else. If not (confused), how about announcing your affiliation next time.

      If you are the same person, than you know as well as I that Ed frequently took an obstructionist position. Also, he wasn't afraid to share his thoughts with the press.

      Now if you are looking for anger, his switching of party affiliations was pretty upsetting to a lot of republicans here (though, various Libertarian Party blogs and publications would claim otherwise...gee...wonder why).

      I apologize, I didn't see how party affiliation was relevant. I am a Libertarian. Did you declare your affiliation?

      Also, I was specifically asking for links to media coverage of Coleman "and his use of constant, obstructionist tactics and sensationalism." Do you have any?

      obstructionalist=against corruption

      sensationalist=telling the truth

      Not big in these days with politics.......So horrible that a politician would talk to the press ...Oh no!!!

      Lets see some facts.......

    • "executive session" seems cowardly.

      It isn't, I chaired a minor city committee for a year , youngest in the state of New Jersey to chair that type of committee. Though I never once called for an executive session, I do understand the reasons why one would. It, to a certain degree, keeps the political bullshit out. If a member is well liked by the public but is unethical behind closed doors it's a way for the governing body to settle the matter without creating an even larger quagmire. That said, if you really want to know what went on in the executive session you could file an OPRA(Open Public Records Act) request. The only reason that they could deny the request is if it had to do with personnel matters. I think anyway.

      Just trying to add a little perspective.

      PS: If it was for purely political reasons then it was probably illegal, but if a legitimate concern was brought up, it was legal.

    • The city council should be made to answer publicly for their actions. The cloak and dagger "executive session" seems cowardly.

      Fairness and civility demand the council offer justification for their decision.

      Fairness and civility...DEMAND?

      I don't believe our "government" even hears our demands. And if they could hear, I really think they could care less about how "We The People" feel or think.

      They've run so far astray and made themselves nearly unaccountable to anyone.
