China to boost military spending

Of course, it doesn't come close to the 515 BILLION dollars in defense spending this government budgeted for 2009- in a recession no less. However, are we to believe that China is increasing military spending just to increase soldier pay? Especially when we look at where they are positioning themselves in the world? And I find it so hypocritical for them to say they are not involved in any conflicts around the world when they are supplying weapons to those in Darfur killing people, and their undeclared marital law in Tibet where they are torturing and killing innocent people.

    • JanforGore:

your disgust is justified but you must understand that most of the world is not willing to make the sacrifices that would be required to "live" without China.

their ability to manufacturer goods on a grand scale so cheaply (at the cost of the liberty of their own people, no doubt) is unmatched. there is little we can do to stop this storm, it is left up to the Chinese people.

    • No, I do not. I'm not a hypocrite. If it says MADE IN CHINA, I don't buy it. And that is what I am doing about it... boycotting their poison products. Why are you defending them?

I'm not defending them, I'm providing some perspective and realsim, and rationality.

Also Jan I'm sure you've bought something, somewhere along the line from China. It can say Made in the USA, but it doesn't actually mean it was made in the USA, just assembled in the USA.

    • It's all very horrible, but we can't do anything about it, the people of China(and Tibet) will have to throw out the authoritarian regime, if they choose to do so. It's probably an inevitable.

As to your comment about China owning us, it's true, to a degree, but Japan, China's historical enemy, also owns around 20% of our debt. It all evens out in the end. And I'm willing to bet that you own items that were made in China.

    • This film, "Murder In The Snow" shows in my view why they are willing to pay their soldiers so well. Horrific and barbaric, and yet, this government continues to do business with them because they own us. I am appalled.

    • China is spending more than $515 billion if you consider the fact that they are financing our wars in Afghanistan, and Iraq. They are also financing just about every war on this planet right now. China is at war to leverage the next generation to their will. China spends its money for a big pay off politically. Here in the U.S. we give Lockheed or Raytheon 11 billion to build one helicopter under the pretense of saving jobs.
Look how powerless so many countries are against China,..no one can force their hand to remove themselves from Sudan, Tibet, Taiwan, or just about any other place that they have "interests" to protect.
China is the number #1 superpower, they have wealth, political might, military might, and most of all,..they are stubborn, so they get what they want.
