Artist makes £10,000 art from beer cans

Faced with a property development business hit by the credit crunch, Plymouth-based artist David Philips sold some of his artworks which, he boasts, are created using a revolutionary new technique. It's paid off too, with some pieces going for as high as £10,000 each. Not bad, considering Philips' seascape pieces are made out of beer cans.

By pasting aluminium shards from around 100 beer cans to canvas, he's able to achieve a 'shimmering ocean' effect.

Like all high art, the inspiration came at a key moment in the artist's life; "I had a can of beer in my hand and I was staring out to sea, and then it hit me – I could combine the two."

    • surely an 'artist' who drinks 100 cans of beer is effectively an alcoholic? given the red face and extra shirts that he is wearing, I'd say he must be sleeping rough and think this story would make a good film. Maybe get roy chubby brown to play david.

    • Artists, and I use that term loosely, can often delude themselves with visions of grandeur. This is a classic example where the 'Artist' has convinced himself that he has more talent than he actually has. If he has actually sold a painting at all let alone for £10,000 I'll eat my jodhpurs. Absolute Codswallop!

    • bigbog - you sound deluded. what on earth is this obsession with animals? I would say that the art work is far beyond that of a junior school kid. twelve at least....
      I've also seen some good autistic stuff that looks like this.

    • ballbag, your comments are rude and inflamitry, whilst theres no doubt this Daviid Phrips fella is a complete douche and his art is on a par with a junior schoold kid I don't like the fact that your'e suggesting he should have sex with animals. What Daviid Phrips does with animals behind closed doors is no business of yours whether they're wearing shirts or not.

    • That's wicked, even more impressive that he can make art that good after drinking 100 cans of beer, and his wife can't tell him off for sitting around drinking all day. He's got it sussed!

    • I think so many brilliant ideas come about like his did... staring out to see with a beer can in hand. These works are pretty incredible. I'd like to see them in person.
