County Sheriff sues Craigslist for creating prostitution safe haven

jubal
CHICAGO (AP) — The sheriff's department for Chicago's Cook County says it's suing Craigslist, calling the popular online classifieds site the largest source of prostitution in the United States.

Sheriff Tom Dart plans a news conference later Thursday.

A call for comment before business hours to Craigslist's public relations firm was not immediately returned.

Craigslist has come under fire in recent months for the "erotic services" ads posted on its site. Several people have been arrested on prostitution charges after posting the ads online.

In November, Craigslist pledged to crack down on prostitution ads as part of an agreement with several attorneys general.

Do you think that prostitution should be illegal or should it be regulated as it is in some European countries? Should people have the right to sell their time, provide body services, and charge money for those services? What do you think?

    • Making a law against it hasn't stopped it. It's kind of like the law spitting into the wind, the wind will win. In stead of spending millions to fight against prostitution we should make millions by regulating and taxing it. Prostitution should be legal.

    • I believe prostitution should be legal but only the case of brothels. No law is going to protect women working on the streets or going to other peoples homes. Something like the HBO show "Cathouse" is definetly the only safe way for someone to sell there body.

    • Prostitution isn't limited to women, men can be prostitutes, too. How do the police know which ad is a prostitution ad and which one is an escort ad?

Also there are many people who are putting themselves through college selling body services. Let's stop punishing vices and start taxing them.

    • Legalize it, clean it up - if it's between consenting adults it is none of the cops' business . It is about respecting women and legitimizing a business that always has been, and will never go away .

    • When I was stationed in Germany at the tender age of 19 and finding out that prostitution was legal I had a great time learning about sex from the pro's. It was safe and very civilized. When I came back to the states after being in such a civilized place such as Europe I realized what a piece of work the United States was. I can only imagine how the cops are pissed they have no control of something that they find so offensive. Get a friggin life pigs.

    • Prostitution is currently illegal and yet it still continues to be a thriving business. Why make these women's lives harder and more dangerous by throwing them through unnecessary leaps and bounds? While prostitution is not the ideal profession for many people it is simply a matter of choice. No one has the right to tell some one what they can and can't do with their bodies, which is the same reason stripping is legal. Even abortion, totally unrelated to prostitution, is currently legal because the fact that it is up to the woman to decide what she should do with her body is recognized by many. So why not prostitution?

    • Prostitution should be legalized. Greece has legalized prostitution and now they have a very strong union. Part of the regulation in Greece is that the woman has to be tested every couple of months before she has her license renewed.

You take out the pimps and there is less of a health hazard (i.e. STIs and HIV) because there are enforced regulations.

    • I think prostitution should be legal for health reasons #1. #2 it should be legal because there is to much government regulation on human function and interaction.#3 it would save tax payers money and provide for regulation to protect the rights of the sex worker.I love craigs list. And i know and care about a few prostitutes in my life.

    • The profession is older than baking bread.

The reason its illegal is because we fundamentally could not schism church from state. That's all.

    • Get them off craigslist so they can move to twitter, myspace, facebook, or about 400 other sites (most of which dont exist yet).

This is an ignorant solution. If there's anything we're learning this decade it's that the internet + the court system = wasted time.

    • There have been 13 dead bodies freshly unearthed in Albuquerque. The few that have identified are said to be prostitutes. Its as if the media and APD are downplaying these murders solely on the fact that they are sex workers. It sickens me that people who imprison women for prostitution are now supposed to care about their homicide investigation. This killer just did what those sicko cops wish they could. P.S. mjsmith11 prostitution is illegal in Clark county, There was a huge sting operation and 50 women made front page news. So all over Vegas the female is sexualized and then punished... all in the name of tourism.

    • STOP, you're missing one of the most important points. This County Sheriff is making use of various legal tactics to effectively force a legal entity to behave differently. There's no evidence that Craigslist is actively promoting prostitution groups to use its service, there's no evidence that Craigslist is providing more service to prostitution groups than it is providing to other service providers.

In short, Craigslist is being prosecuted for providing a legal service that also happens to be used by prostitutes.

    • Tayllerand:

Absolutely, children should not be sexualized. They should be able to learn the facts and then experiment on their own time, not be forced into anything.

And while we are at it, lets work to reduce or eliminate the stigma associated with being a virgin, too.

    • Anything that will help get rid of the sex slavery bus. that exists in this Country right under our noses would help.
Legalize and tax it. That would be a bigger jolt to our ailing economy than this stupid stimulus package.

I agree, Craigslist is a company and companies shouldn't decide the law....hmmm but that is already happening....but that is another conversation.

Prostitution should be controlled by the states, unless enough states legalize it and it becomes an issue with interstate commerce. It should be decided by the people.

But at the very least, it should be decriminalized.

    • Not to mention also it would lessen the case load of many courtrooms around the country, create jobs for people who would provide infrastructure for the whole enterprise.

As for American politics, the time has come to start taxing vices instead of punishing them.

    • Prostitution should be legalized, and prostitutes should be given safe working conditions, protection from pimps, health care, and so on. As long as there will be a demand for their services, the profession will endure. Prostitutes will gladly pay taxes in these conditions.

    • Personally I think that we need to legalize prostitution in this country as much as we need to legalize weed.
