NARITA, Japan, March 7 (AP) - (Kyodo)—The Tokyo customs office will soon deploy search dogs at Narita airport to detect guns and other firearms, sources close to the plan said Saturday.
Being employed at the biggest gateway to Japan are two Labrador Retrievers -- a male and female -- both of which have already received intensive training at a cost of about 15 million yen at a special learning center in Australia, the sources said.
The dogs, the first of their kind to be used at a Japanese airport, were trained not only to detect the presence of firearms but also recognize the specific scents of gunpowder and oil used in the maintenance of guns.
The plan is part of an action program the government's anti-crime council compiled at the end of last year, which included enhancing customs' ability to detect gun smuggling.
