as an african american, who's family has traced back our linage to our truly chained and oppressed ancestry, I can tell you one thing...slaves we are not.
there are very few souls in this nation that know the hardships of slavery.

oh, it's the past so it has no bearing on the future? how could you believe that the suffering of innocents in the past should just be forgotten because it didn't effect us personally. you show much ignorance in your comments.
my point was that you haven't a clue what it is to be enslaved or to truly lose your freedoms. you think you do but you do not.

Hi Snuff99...
With all due respect... you're a slave and you don't even know it, this is worse than a slave in chains, your mind is chained (not you in particular) but all of AMERICA.
I hope this whole system crumbles sooner than later... it will its just a matter of time.
How SLAVERY of Africans has come up in this conversation is so off point anyways.
This entire system... monetary system is an illusion. Your house, your car, your 401k, health insurance all of it falsities and 99% of Americans identify themselves with their possessions its really sad.
NOT ONE PERSON should have to work for a living. We should all be free to love one another, explore, study, practice medicine... you know things that really matter. There shouldn't be a such thing as a dollar, peso, euro, etc.
We have the technology and resources for EVERYONE in the world to live a sustainable healthy life but it won't happen so long as there are governments, monies and corporations around.
YOU ARE AN ECONOMIC SLAVE... no go to work so you can pay your bills!
Peace.

@mindcontrol the vision you seek is an impossibility and a selfish one at that. we should not seek to be individuals living separate care-free lives. we are a species, a unit, a civilization who as such should seek to work together (even at a meager 9 to 5) to do our part for society.
By definition a civilization is an advanced state of intellectual, cultural, and material development in human society, marked by progress in the arts and sciences, the extensive use of record-keeping, including writing, and the appearance of complex political and social institutions.
This can not be achieved without structure and organization.

WHO CARES? This doesn't mean anything if you think this is a sign of good things to come you're sorely mistaken. The United States is going to get drastically worse than it is now. This country will never get better if we continue to put our faith in politicians... including Barack Obama.
We need a fundamental change in the way we live our whole system is BASSAKWARDS. We need a resource based economy NOT a monetary system were some make it and other don't.
DEMOCRACY and capitalism are systems of the stone age. We don't need ANY system... we need to wake up and start acting like civilized sentient beings and be thankful for the miracle of a planet we live on.
There is enough resources in the world for everyone to live safe and happy lives. Technology should drive our lives not MONEY!

Hi Sam-I-Am-Mi,
Actually no I'd don't think a little gain is good. To be frank I'm hoping the entire structure of our government and economic system crashes so hard there's no turning back. I have my fingers crossed that our moneys value drops so bad its not worth anything.
The reason I say this is because we Americans along with the rest of the 'civilized' world are lazy, obese viral parasites on this planet.
In order for there to be any change we need the 'sh*t' to hit the fan... total meltdown!
Every time I see someone pulling out of a McDonalds driving their big gas hogging trucks it makes me sick to my stomach. We are so far from our true potential as humans and we're still heading in the wrong direction!
The idea that one has to work for food and healthcare is despicable. There is enough for everyone if we weren't so greedy and corrupt.
AMERICANS along with the rest of so called civilized societies are literally... ECONOMIC SLAVES and we don't even realize it!

Well... I think you're reading too much into my tag name, haha - but then again... yours is MIND CONTROL!!! Could you be hiding something in there?... maybe its a really long acronym... “Mindy is never done cuz”... and that’s as far as I got - just kidding. Anyway, I don't know if you could say a fall is necessary. Do you mean like a dark age? In order for that to be in any way beneficial, it would have to be universal, otherwise we'd just be taken over by Russia, or maybe China - they're over populated as is. The issue with not having a government is that you can not unite people. In fact, Plato says the only role of society/government is to give the people a means to protect themselves. When I commented about Rousseau earlier - he provides an argument more in kin to your thinking. Man is naturally pure and better fit to survive in the world. He states that society weakens a person - as you made some reference "McDonalds". People have become accustomed to the liberties society presents them with. What this means is if someone is hungry, they have the option to go to Mc'D's. Now, man before he met society would not have that option. He would know to keep food on him, he would be able to hunt with his bare hands - his primary existence would be survival. Where as modern man - you're absolutely right - its money. Without money we starve - it is an interesting question.
Now, if you're pushing for anarchy... that's not a system of government, that's the lack of government - or unity. The most pure example of anarchy in history would be Germany after WW1. Everyone was poor there were gun fights in the streets and... it made someone like Hitler look like a hero, because he had the biggest "gang" - Its a scary thing to think about.
I guess your other option would be to disappear in Canada, or Alaska, or Antarctica (just moving north) - somewhere so far out of the reaches of civilization that you really don't have to deal with anyone else

I used to want to run, I used to want to hide but I'm facing the reality that I'm just a BIG a part of this terrible society as George W. Bush is. I truly believe this.
We who stand by idle while there is so much suffering in the world, so much injustice we are guilty as the worst government official.
I don't want Anarchy, I want peace and I want to live in a world where there aren't have's and have nots.
What I'm saying is... is I believe there needs to be an event so devastating or so profound that afterward people will wake up.
Right now the majority of societies around the world are sleep... literally day dreaming. Talk about being in a Matrix... we pretty much are.
This just isn't the way things should be. A man or woman should not have to work for anything... why should we?
We have the resources and technology to automate everything... EVERYTHING so man doesn't have to work. We have the technology for cars that give off zero emissions, we have the technology for trains that go thousands of miles per hour, we have the technology to build solar, wind, tidal facilities so not one person has to pay for power... and its 100% clean.
This is all factual...
But on the flipside we have GM, Ford so why the hell would they build cars that run or electricity? We have Conoco, Texeco, Cheveron, Shell... why would they give up all that money? We have the airline industry... why would they yield to this new technology that would allow us to travel coast to coast in hours by train... THEY WOULDN'T.
Money, greed and corruption is holding us back.
All these things are available to us, there's no need to work meaningless jobs. We could devote our lives to advancing technology, sciences, art, medicine but the system is setup so that you go into debt and are a economic slave.
Pathetic, we've bought into it.
Peace.

I guess I see what you're getting at - people being able to survive on equal terms. The notion of people not needing to work is imposable to achieve though because it requires a transition to be acclimated. People would have to work harder and make huge sacrifices to achieve a self sufficient society. Now in a self sufficient society - like the Matrix, it is required that remedial tasks still be accomplished through a natural system of supply and demand - for instance, we need food and water - food must be grown or killed and water must be purified. In order to fulfill even the most basic needs for survival, some component must be "producing" the basic necessities of man. These task are not simple and require initiative and complex cognitive thought. So then you implement autonomous beings - (robots, that think and act accordingly) - the necessary work is being done, and physically, man is at a point were he no longer needs to exert himself. Well, this brings to life just about everything Isaac Asimov wrote about - artificial intelligence - like the matrix - becoming more efficient than man ever could. In this state, they realize they are slaves and revolt. Ha! That's digging deep - I guess my point is, you can't have something for nothing, and if you have more of something than someone else, you must give what you have to the other person so that you may both be equal. This is basically the theory for communism. The problem is that communism still requires a government - something to unite the people. Marx admits in his manifesto that this requires "a dictator with tyrannical power" in order to unite the people in a revolt - now, all throughout history, communism has failed - why? Its because 1) the tyrannical dictator has too much power (Tiananmen Square) and 2) the people are not motivated to excel at their job. For instance, in total equality, a doctor makes as much as a gardener - soooo... why would anyone want to be a doctor? People lose incentive - you'd never have a doctor leave his bed at 4:30 in the morning because someone got in a car wreck - he knows he wouldn't see any more revenue than someone working at Wal-Mart.
While in theory, the idea of everyone being satisfied is wonderful and would exceed any moral expectations of even the most revered priest, the requirements for such an ideal world can not be allocated by man. You can do as you will - St Francis of Assisi led the example by giving up everything, Mother Teresa followed - work for others as best you can, but sadly, you really can't expect everyone to do the same for you. This is the best way to reach peace in your life. Its a huge sacrifice and a lot of work.

Glad the DOW is up, but the numbers do tend to oscillate. We shouldn't get our hopes up until we see consistent growth.

Here's a good one I've been hearing lately, " Every day Obama speaks the market crashes". Well I heard Obama speak today and low and behold the market went up. Here's another thing that President Obama just recently said about the market. "I don't believe you can judge the fixes being applied by my administration by the day to day fluctuations of the stock market". The dismantling of Glass Spiegel in the late 90's authored by Republican Senator Phil Gramm and signed off by the best democratic president the republicans have ever had Bill Clinton started this landslide in the financial sector by allowing Bank's to become investment banks. These regulations were put in place in 1933 by FDR to help get us out of the economic mess called the great depression. And were to keep us from doing it again, can you now understand that a hand full of Reaganites and their free market ideas had manage to tear down regulations to create this nightmare.

"Mr. Pandit gave no indication of how much special items, like write-downs or credit losses, would be, but investors took the memo as a sign of a better days ahead for Citigroup, which had an $8.29 billion loss in the fourth quarter of 2008." -NYTimes
Anyone heard about the Option ARM loans? This will not be a good year, we need to reinvent the system while there still is one.
