A man has survived plunging 55 metres over the Niagara Falls, becoming the second person in over 100 years to live after going over the edge with no protective gear.
Said to be distraught, he jumped into the rapids above The Horseshoe Falls, one of Niagara's three waterfalls, and after surviving the impact, resisted rescuer's attempts to help him by swimming away from them and climbing out of a sling dropped by a helicopter.
"He was on a suicide mission, I assume," said Mr Hafen, the pilot. "I've never, in my career, seen someone so tough, swimming between the ice."
The man's now in a critical condition in Niagara Falls hospital, with hypothermia and a head injury.

ClareW - have you seen a documentary called The Bridge, about people who commit suicide by jumping of The Golden Gate bridge in San Fran?
There's a guy who survives the plunge (a very, very rare thing) who takes that as a sign that he wasn't meant to die. I think he now helps counsel other people going through similar problems.

This whole story is incredible, that he survived that and then resisted all attempts to rescue him, it's a pity that he didn't rethink his decision to kill himself after such a miraculous survival.
