Under new proposals by the government's top advisors, its reported that alcoholic drinks should cost no less than 50p per unit in the curb to tackle binge drinking in England, meaning that wine will not cost below £4.50.

    • Bottles of wine not being sold for less than £4.50 isn't that bad. But only time will tell if this is a good decision in terms of curbing binge drinking. Perhaps it won't have any effect on binge drinking, and will just result in people spending more money on drinking.

    • If people are already getting into loads of debt paying their rent, bills, trying to run a car then adding a few bottles of expensive wine to a credit card ain't gonna make the slightest bit of difference to their financial position.

If they do do this, then the money they gain from it should be put into counseling alcoholics.

    • I agree, it's a culture thing - raising the price will have little effect on people buying it, which i imagine didn't escape the governments attention when they proposed the increase - as they get about 5.7Bn total alcohol tax revenue per year.

    • Changing the cost will not affect people's habits.

We need a culture change in the UK with regard to alcohol. Supermarkets need to stop selling it as a loss leader, children need to be educated on the positive effects as well as the negatives and being catatonic needs to be seen as anti-social behaviour.

I agree; Raising prices wont stop those that abuse alcohol; the problem is finding out why the minority abuse alcohol and trying to remedy it rather than punishing the majority who drink responsebly by raising prices.
