Sea Level Rise Due To Global Warming Poses Threat To New York City

Image
TravG73
Sea levels around New York City and much of the U.S. Northeast will rise twice as much as in other parts of the United States this century, according to new climate models.

Driven by changes in ocean circulation, the rapid sea level rise will bring increased risk of damage from hurricanes and winter storm surges, researchers say.

    • "Temporary variances for tides and weather aside, sea level is sea level across the globe."

An interesting theory, but not supported by the data. Google "variances in sea level," and look over some of the 7 million hits.

Basically, relative to the 139 million square miles of ocean area on this planet, and the 310 million cubic miles of water in them, an area/volume like the Northeastern US is tiny enough to be effected by current, continental shelf, etc.

By your theory, since there's only one moon, and one ocean, all tides should take place at the same time (relative to lunar motion), and the same amplitude. Good luck with that.

    • I am very curious to learn how/why sea level can rise twice as much around NYC and the NorthEast United States than other areas of the country. The sea is WATER and the oceans/seas are all interconnected. Experiment with this on any scale you'd like. Try to raise the level of water only in one part of a lake/pond/pool/tub/bucket without raising it equally throughout. Temporary variances for tides and weather aside, sea level is sea level across the globe. Those posting this, and conducting this "research" need to go back and take elementary school science.

    • The Rain
Abu Bin Adam was a young child in Multan Pakistan, it was Friday the month of March in 1977, the heavenly light told Abu,“ the first rain on the Vernal Equinox will be the rain of Holy water and drinking of that water will purify the human body . The city of Cure was burning with heat and dust from the Sun rays until noon then God (Rab) started the gusty wind and within few hours rain of holy water was pouring down from the skies . The smell of dust was giving taste of heaven and I prayed to my God and said (Subhan na rabi al ahla) Jame Alome (Drink of Knowledge) was pouring down from the skies which I collected in a small bucket and drank . It is the rain that started life on earth millions of years ago on the dry land . It is the day when gravity hit the earth and movement of time and the round holy dance of nature started for the garden of Adam. Ritual of SADQA “donation” ( Giving to Poor and throwing food for ocean life, Birds and animals and planting seeds and flowers started many years ago in Human Faith of Mehdi .
Blessing on humanity (Rabi) from Mehdi and Adam the father and the son with Holy Spirit!
It is true that the phenomena of life is stuck in the pressure of gravity which is losing pressure due to temperature change .The phenomena of gravity is distributing equal weight on ocean waters and mass of gases surrounding a shallow body of cultivating system of nature. It is the pressure that divide water and gases equally that makes the shape of earth looks round and colorful. The knots of mountains are holding our piece of solid mineral deposits can reshape it self due to pressure change. It is just matter of time when new island will emerge from water and old go under. The root cause that is affecting mother nature and reproduction system of earth worm and bacteria is humanity was never enforced by selfish ancient and modern civilizations . The personal propriety that we bring on this earth is the nature and the root of that nature is humanity .The human faith pro life agenda for all creatures is humanity. The painful condition that is destroying cultivating system is not understanding connection that the basic human knowledge starts with nature. The fusion reactor of the sun has the same system of reproducing energy the way we do on earth the only difference is this earth is losing natural resources too fast due to ignorant modern merchants of life . Human faith is Mehdi’s and Adam’s monotheistic faith and knows that God is the creator and overseer of the universe at all the time and all matters. It is time to modernize our faith by adopting true faith and educate mankind in accordance with basic principle of life. Our vision is to introduce true human religion by mobilizing communities and faiths around the world to improve people’s lives .Our mission is to strength the bond of humanity (Rabi) by introducing human faith religion.
IN GOD (Rab) WE TRUST WE HAVE FAITH IN HUMANITY (Rabi).
Rabi has many meaning in our language.
      1. Rabi is Book of Human Faith.
      2. Rabi is brain.
      3. Rabi is humanity.
      4. Rabi is our tongue.

    • If our government was so concerned about global warming, especially from carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide then why do we continue to import fossel fuels which are totally responsible for the carbon pollution? And for thye Flouro chloro contamination of the atmosphere why dont we cover up the oceans to prevent the evaporation of the sodium chlorides in the oceans?

    • there's already plans to build levees between Staten Island and Brooklyn, another somewhere along the Long Island sound (I think near Throngs Necks), and another between Staten Island and Bayonne. This is of course to protect Manhattan, not sure what the plan is for the coasts of other boroughs.

Your tirade does not prove your "intelligence".

Not all scientific fact is exactly fact. There are also scientific facts proving that the earth goes through climate cycles, but people seem to ignore the majority of scientists who believe that. The few radicals who started this propaganda-filled movement draw from speculation and fear.
See through this drama; the earth is not dying because of us, nor in the near future. Humanity is dying because of itself. The earth, on the other hand, will survive for aeons without us after the fall of humanity, as it had before the beginning.

uponrooftops, you are ridiculous. Have you ever heard of a Brita Water filter? That's all Dasani, or any of the other bottled water companies do with their water, if that at all. Plastic bottles produce needless waste. It makes far more sense to have a reusable water bottle. Firstly, it's cheaper, and secondly, it's greener.

Brita water filters get thrown away too.

They don't remove the toxins that TMI released into the water and atmosphere 30 years ago.

The "green" movement is a fallacy created by corporations to trick people into using less efficient everything, that breaks faster so that people will have to buy more. So-called "green" electric cars are not so, because they are inefficient and run slower than normal gasoline cars. Electricity is often derived from oil, coal, and nuclear plants.

No person, place or thing will be (is) exempt from a planet scorned. This isn't just like a few consequences,... it's global, it's everywhere and it's now. The balance has been disrupted,... and until MAJOR efforts are made,... we're doomed - but for the sake of the planet.

    • You forgot self destructive. Kind of like a species they call Lemmings. Every once in a while, like the blind following the blind they make a mass migration to fall off the cliffs into the sea to drown. Maybe they're lemurs who can't stand the light of day, and have that instinct to self destruct by drawing themselves out into the light with their Robin Hood in reverse Reaganomics. Well, charge it ! If not up San Juan hill with the Roughriders, then on the Corporate carpet facing their masters, the Bankers, ie the Fluffriiders.
Water is very soft, yet heavy. When Wall Street is permanently under water waiting for the next Ice Age to follow the Global Warming phase of imbalance, I wonder where their money for nothing philosophy will
get them then ? It's the world Big Oil Monopoly that started causing this global flooding 150 years with John D. Rockefeller and Standard Oil . I wonder how Oil futures will be trading when they have to swim to work ? I bet those Indians who were swindled out of their land on Manhatten island for $24 worth of
trinkets are rolling in their graves laughing now.

    • ok, so this is an honest question: Say we stop all the crap that is leading to such a warming........will the planet then get cooler again? Will the lost ice be replaced? And will the temp eventually return to what it was pre-our destructive ways?

    • Nice thought but since the levees built for new orleans are not enough, and because sea levels will rise in feet not inches, that will not work! levees would have to be 30 feet high! quick fixes aren't going to work here people! only through education, political action, and a reversal in the pollution of our planet will save us now!

    • The whole east coast is at extreme risk and most large cities downtown areas will be underwater in 50 years if not sooner! Those of you who think and say that global warming is all made up are fools and only care about "paying Taxes"! Fools! If the polar ice caps continue to melt two things will happen! First sea levels will rise causing cities along any coast to flood, and second temps are rising! A 6 degree rise in the temps year round, and the flooding, will leave this planet a totally different place then it is now! The evidence is out there! Do some research!

second world : destoryed by fire
      third world: destroyted by water
      fourth world: by wind

The last world was already destoyed by water, these floods won't wipe us out, just mitigate our populations; them hurricanes gonna wipe us out... more ocean, more area to make strength for storms

    • Living on the continental divide has its advantages...

Its like two men in a small rowboat one in the bow and one in the stern. There's a leak in the stern with water spurting up like a little geyser... The man in the back is furiously baling water and the man in the bow is thinking... "Thank God the hole is not in my side of the boat..."

because no one looks to the future.... everyone seeks immediate gratification and doesn't care to think about 50 years down the road, let alone the fact that flood insurance probably will not cover any of these events/

No, actually a revenue neutral carbon tax would put money in your pockets as a result of a decrease in payroll taxes, and hopefully spur more businesses to use alternate energy sources which would also put more in your pocket. Businesses that are environmentally responsible wouldn't pay any such tax. It would be more of a mechanism to spur positive change which aside from climate change is simply healthier and safer for this country and the world as a whole. It is incredible how the same ignorant ones who always spew this misinformation think nothing of allowing billions of our tax dollars to go for wars while our people are neglected. You don't hear a peep out of them about that. Just use anything to skewer Al Gore any chance they get. SOS.

Yes, my name here speaks of my support and I'm proud of it because he's a good man. I am also informed about this unlike the usuals who do nothing but repeat the same rhetoric with nothing to back it up. And may I add, "clownpuncher" that your name suits you perfectly. Why don't you look in the mirror and take a good swing at yourself.

I honestly don't think that name calling will change someone's opinion on "Global Warming". Each of us are entitled to our own opinions, so let us not harass each other on who may be right or wrong. Anyway, it is our constitutional right to express our opinion.

Historically the earth and all the planets go through periods of warming and cooling. Hence the Ice Age, etc. This is due to sun, not the greenhouse gases we emit from our engines.

Although, I don't agree with the concept of global warming, I do believe that we should lessen our impact on the earth, and live in an ecologically sustainable way. It's healthy, and responsible.

Wow I didnt think we had that many climatologists on this site. Love conservatives. Just because you were probably smarter than your hero George W. doesn't make you smarter than the majority of climatologists. I guess i should listen to Rush so i can get the rhetoric straight from his mouth and not from the conservatives that frequent this site. All this from the party who brought us "Intelligent Design" now that is funny. Its magic god says so. Give me a fucking break.

Just because I don't buy into all the hype about global warming doesn't mean that I should be grouped with conservatives.

Maybe people should just start thinking for themselves, rather than letting the government think for them. Or doing what they do, because it is the conservative/ liberal way.
