Whilst the media has a huge role in how British youths are portrayed and perceived by older generations, I think it's a bit of a stretch to say the media is pitting boys against each other.

Society isn't making it easy for youth today. According to a piece in the Guardian today, Ephebiphobia (fear of the young) is on the rise among adults. This distorted perception of young people that's perpetuated through the media and among adult groups is creating a self-fulfilling prophecy and it's making it harder for young people to ant to be good: "why bother to try when you are told that you are a failure? Why bother to strive when your existence is seen as a nuisance?"

I don't think this is anything new. Every new generation threatens the prior one like that new Clint Eastwood movie, Gran Torino, where he is basically just like YOU DAMN KIDS GET OFF MY LAWN.
What I do find interesting though is that the teens feel like there has been a sea-change. Are "feral yobs" really more prominent in England than they are any other country?
