Legal papers were filed late Monday in Superior Court in Stamford against Sandra Herold by relatives of Charla Nash. The papers seek an accounting of Herold's assets and an order that would prevent her from liquidating assets.
The Cleveland Clinic has said 55-year-old Nash lost her hands, nose, lips and eyelids and may be blind and suffering brain damage after the attack on Feb. 16 in Stamford.
The 200-pound chimp was shot and killed by police. A message was left with Herold seeking comment...

Obviously we are outraged by the mauling this woman recieved from the chimp; I'm still not quite sure if this woman was adequately educated about the behavior of chimps or was trained to handle them safely. Chimps become very strong between the ages of 2-3 years old and are usually no longer used in movies and/or commercials; their wild instincts kick in as they sexually mature and only seasoned handlers should have contact with them. Chimps are Not cute and cudly replacements for children or less dangerous pets such as dogs and cats. I wish her well, but her injuries sound life threatening.

What's wrong with you people?! She lost her hands, nose, lips, and eyelids the sight in one eye and some of her brain cognition in a TWELVE MINUTE MAULING!!! I can't even begin to comprehend how incredibly horrifying twelve minutes of pure Hell must have been.
She lost her HANDS!! I don't know what I would do with myself if I couldn't type or feed myself or pet my dog.
The article said the owner was giving the chimp unprescribed meds (that are meant for human consumption only) and the chimp had attacked humans before. The owner was even advised by the personnel of the primate rescue not to keep the monkey in the house. I would be suing this bitch for everything she had. I'd ruin her.
@fun-size: Where in the article does it say the owner stabbed her own monkey? The police shot it.

Good comment. I'd be suing as well. I mean really, it's horrible what happened to the woman. In fact, It's beyond horrible.

if you read the original article you'll see the owner attempted to stab the creature to death. You will also see that it was being treated for depression with human meds, which I think is fairly common in zoos etc. monkeys are very susceptible to depression.
what is 50 million dollars going to solve? will it give her back what she lost? no
She probably wasn't even really aware of what was happening. people rarely are during the event. it's not like "hostel" she wasn't tied in a chair and tortured slowly.
all her medical bills including reconstruction and rehabilitation should be paid for. also, this case should be used to ban people from owning wild animals outside of their natural habitat. but smacking somone with a fee they can never pay wont' fix anything, and as was noted, the victim was friends with the owner.

I re-read the article posted as the source and it doesn't say that she stabbed him, but a different article explains that she did indeed try to help her friend. I stand corrected.
And while I do agree that 50 million dollars isn't going to help her emotional scarring, the negligence of the owner is still astounding. You can't just give an animal anxiety pills that haven't been recommended by a vet and expect them to work without a hitch. I was given penicillin for strep and I found out I was allergic (thanks to my doctor). This chimp could have had an adverse reaction that could have been avoided had a doctor been in the picture (granted the monkey's motive is still up in the air, though).

No one is saying that what happened wasnt a terrible and tragic event. I feel terrible for the woman who was mauled. However, putting her friend(the pets owner) in the poor house isnt going to right things at all.

who the hell has 50 million dollars?
wild animals shouldn't be pets unless you happen to be living in their habitat. so, perhaps an example should be made.
on the other hand, if you actually read the story you'd know the lawsuit is a dick move.
suing for money isn't the answer, it will have no positive effect whatsoever.

Wow what a dick move. The victim was good friends with the chimps owner and the owner stabbed her own monkey to save her friend and she gets repaid with a $50 million lawsuit?

Once this case goes to trial and is heard by a jury, the $50 million award will probably be chopped way down. The family can only collect as much as what the chimp's owner actually HAS, which probably isn't much.
I wonder if her homeowner's insurance covers "attack by chimp". Not to the tune of $50 million, that's for sure!

Although Its stupid to think a chimp makes a nice pet, I think that 50 million is a bit much.
If anything I think this needs to bring up the issue of keeping wild animals as pets. Chimps are not pets, they should not be kept as pets either.
The woman who was mauled was a friend of the owner of the chimp. The owner needed help to calm down the chimp so she called and asked here friend to help, her friend came and held a stuffed animal to the chimp which just pissed the thing off even more. If I saw a chimp going crazy I would go no where near it, her (the friend) negligence lead her to her current condition.
I hate how people try so hard to turn a tragedy into some get rich quick scheme, its disgusting.

The owner of the chimp should go to jail and lose all her money. Her behavior and attitude are simply reprehensible and should be punished to the limit of the law.
An example must be set for the yahoos who think they can keep wild animals as pets without consequence.
