Pope: Condoms could worsen Aids

The Roman Catholic pope has come under renewed criticism after saying that condoms are not the solution to Africa's HIV epidemic.

Pope Benedict XVI made the remarks as he started a seven-day tour of the continent on Tuesday.

An estimated 22 million people in Africa have HIV, the virus that leads to Aids.

Three-quarters of all Aids deaths in 2007 were in sub-Saharan Africa.

"You can't resolve it [Aids] with the distribution of condoms," the pope said. "On the contrary, it increases the problem."

He will later travel to Angola on a tour that aims to raise awareness of Africa's key problems - famine, poverty and armed conflict.

!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Pope Benedict XVI's ignorant comments also raise awareness of Africa's other key problem, religion.

    • karlman01, Good link. I think that condoms don't worsen the problem, but-- like your link states-- It's the way that they are being distriputed and to whom (often the teenagers) without taking any cultural standards into account. If you were just to play rock-and-roll in a van and throw out condoms to everyone that walks past, in a conservative society, thats not going to fly and condoms are not going to get used.

    • Maybe he thinks by distributing condoms you are reminding people they can have sex? I don't really get the pope's statement. Doesn't make sense.

Don't believe everyone who wears a goofy hat.

      Whoops.

    • Two thirds of the world's people who have the HIV/Aids virus live in sub-Saharan Africa, where Pope Benedict has come under criticism for saying during a recent visit that condoms are not the solution.

In Angola, few people are willing to talk openly about the virus.

But the government has launched a new Aids awareness campaign, warning of the dangers of unprotected sex.

Al Jazeera's Yvonne Ndege has the story from Luanda.
