Chicago's South Side Irish Parade Cancelled

Chicago, IL. - The South Side won’t be as Irish next year. The South Side Irish St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee has decided it will not stage the popular parade on Western Avenue in 2010, the Sun-Times is reporting.

Founded in 1979, the parade was the brainchild of two South Side families seeking a neighborhood celebration of Irish heritage.

But times have changed. The parade now attracts more than 300,000 visitors a year and the sheer volume of people has created problems the neighborhood can no longer reasonably accommodate, the parade committee has decided.

“The committee will work to create a series of alternate events that will return us to what the parade’s founders had in mind -- a neighborhood-friendly celebration of Irish heritage,” the statement said.

    • I think there's enough people to form a 'NEW COMITTEE' to keep the parade going. WHAT, if too many people start going to the Chicago marathon, will they shut that down too???

    • What the Hell? Well, after being through there quite a bit in the 90's. I'd say celebrate in a larger venue at a football stadium. In this day and age if you can generate something that brings the local merchants and other surrounding areas. I mean over 300,000 people..Never look a gift horse in the mouth!
