Freedom Tower is no more, say hello to One World Trade Center

The Freedom Tower is out. One World Trade Center is in.

The agency that owns the site says that the signature 1,776-foot skyscraper replacing the towers destroyed on Sept. 11, 2001, will be known as One World Trade Center.

The building under construction at the site was named the Freedom Tower in the first master plan. Officials at the time said the tallest, most symbolic of five planned towers at the site would demonstrate the country's triumph over terrorism.

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Chairman Anthony Coscia says the agency refers to the building as One World Trade Center. He says it's the building's legal name and "the one that's easiest for people to identify with."

"As we market the building, we will ensure that it is presented in the best possible way — and 1 World Trade Center is the address that we're using," said Coscia.

"It's the one that is easiest for people to identify with — and frankly, we've gotten a very interested and warm reception to it."

    • I wish we would have just rebuilt the old towers, modernized obviously, but the same general design. We should have had a groundbreaking 4 years ago.

      Maybe Larry Silverstein should pay the tab on this building as he is the one that say "pull it" about tower 7 when it just had a few little fires. Sprinklers anyone?
      And how many billions did he really get for leasing 7 from the AMERICAN PEOPLE????

    • Yeah, too bad it won't be finished by the end of the century. Honestly, We've been hearing about rebuilding efforts and they've been pretty much stalled since 2003, either because the developer, port authority, or the 9/11 families wanted something changed or ran out of money. If you look at ground zero, it pretty much looks the same as it did in 2005. There's work on the basement, but it hasn't taken much rise.

      ok while i do agree that new world order is the old world order..i cannot agree with embracing it...i embrace freedom of expression aslong as it does not harm others.They wish to limit my freedoms until i have none.I have children and a wife and plan to protect their freedoms for aslong as the vital energy which sustains life flows through my body.

      If I may make one comment... protect thier freedom not thier freedom"s". It is not necessarily independance that makes one free. Read John Locke's second treatise on civil gonverment. This excerpt is a bit long but it is powerfull.

    • I think ...........call it WORLD TRADE CENTER as it needs no identifying name tag, as what happened will never be forgotten.

      If anything the demolished building could be called ONE, but personally I'd be in favor of reconstructing the WORLD TRADE CENTER.

    • it is such a disgrace that they haven't even done a damn thing on that ground.

      to me, there are only two options.

      A) make it a park and dedicate it as a sacred burial site to honor the people who perished and honor the FDNY.

      or

      B) completely rebuild the twin towers exactly as before but twice as strong. that would be the ultimate way to symbolize our strength and determination and say to the terrorists that "you cannot break us"

      That is what we have now, two economies in one world. You have the legitimate economy that is monitored and taxed and then you have the black market economy, that is not monitored, considered illegal and subject to seizure under criminal law, and involves almost half of the inhabitants on this planet. Anyone trying to make a living from the earth is pretty much a target of the legitimate economy.

      i was refering to a 1 world economy with a 1 world currency, which is what china is trying to negotiate with with Tim Geitner. A world economy would shift economies everywhere and set the new world for bankers.

    • replacing the WTC with any structure(which should have been Bush's priority) will be the first step towards healing open wounds. Once a building is in place, it will remind everyone that we regroup, rebuild, stand together and strong. leaving this space vacant for so long will always keep us battling each other.

    • Doesn't matter what they call it. Financially it might be a waste but I think they are better off putting a memorial or something there. I can't see it being a success. How many people are going to want to work in this building. Any large structure like this, on that sight, would likely be attacked again. Are they actually going to put a bulls-eye on it???

      The name is a frightening thing to hear. Why can't it just be a Liberty Tower or a One America Tower or No More Tyranny Tower.
