International Olympic Committee (IOC) ceased from the idea of torch relay for the 2012 London Olympic Games because of fear for incidents.

    • who needs symbolism these days . the IOC , with the generous help of donors , could simply buy an island somewhere and build an infrastructure to host the games in perpetuity .

    • Well it wasn't a real long tradition to do so in the first place anyway.

"The torch relay of modern times which transports the flame from Greece to the various designated sites of the games had no ancient precedent and was introduced by Carl Diem, with the support of Joseph Goebbels, at the controversial Berlin Olympics as a means to promote Nazi ideology."

    • I seen the torch come through my town when I was in Junior High and it was cool but it was just and old man walking. Not much of a torch run but still epic reason to get out of class for nothing. The actual torch was pretty high tech looking.

    • Well, based on this last Olimpic Torch problem, where every runner was surrounded by cops and yet still, lot of people got arrested and got in trouble.
      I would do the same.
Is not the Olimpic's Commitee fault that the world is enraged and filled with lots of problems everywhere. The media has grown outside corporations and now people are not staying quiet this time.

We are headed to a distressed time. We, as a world. so,

I wouldnt do Olimpics at ALL, if there cannot be unity. But since the Olimpics IS business after all, theres nothing we can do about it, beside frowning.

    • First of all the IOC sucks for doing this and whoever blames China for this is an idiot...yeah people took advantage of the olympics last year to protest but its stupid to blame the host country for it. Anyways, I really think that the olympics in 2012 being in London and all won't be much of a problem so I hope they reverse this ridiculous decision.

So you're insinuating that it won't be a problem with London because unlike China, England doesn't have a dismal human rights record, doesn't censor the media, doesn't silence dissenters.... or in other words: doesn't justify protests. So yes, China did attract protests. If you want to get into who's fault it was, it was the IOC's for choosing such a political hot potato country to host the 2008 Olympics.

    • The torch running ceremony had no ancient precedent and was created by Carl Diem with the support of Joseph Goebbels as a way to add mystique to the Nazi government. Its one of the central themes in the classic propaganda film Olympia. I think it's good that we've finally dropped the Nazi ideology part of the games first introduced and specifically invented for the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

    • I can't imagine that everyone would be running to put out the flames for the London games like they were for the China games (which I found bit bigoted in itself). The IOC is useless anyway and I guess they don't understand the difference between the two situations.

    • That's what the IOC gets for giving the games to China.

So many protests targeted the torch relay because it was the easiest method to bring attention to the cause of Tibet, Taiwan and human rights.

With the Beijing2008 protests still fresh in the mind, the IOC is afraid of it happening again. Open your eyes IOC: it's not the torch relay that's the problem, it was the host you picked for 2008.

A torch relay for London 2012 would go without much protest.
