Proposed commission would seek to bring prison populations down, 'overhaul drug criminalization'

Even as President Barack Obama slapped down the hopes of American marijuana consumers as to his position on legalization, Senator Jim Webb (D-Va) was quietly preparing to introduce major legislation which has the potential to dramatically alter US drug laws.

Calling the US criminal justice system "a national disgrace," two US senators called for a top-to-bottom review with an eye on reforms aimed at reducing America's vast prison population.

Senator Webb, backed by Republican Senator Arlen Specter, introduced legislation to create a blue-ribbon panel that would conduct an 18-month assessment and offer concrete recommendations for reform.

Sen. Webb's legislation enjoys not just bipartisan support, but "quiet encouragement from President Barack Obama," reported The Virginian-Pilot.

"America's criminal justice system has deteriorated to the point that it is a national disgrace," Webb said, noting that the United States has five percent of the world's population but 25 percent of the world's prisoners.

    • We must ask ourselves if it is more disrupting and destructive to our society to make an absolute mess of a person's life by prosecuting them and imprisoning them than that person's drug use and / or possession of it?

I've already decided for myself and this is what I have to say on the issue: those who would prosecute a person for such has no business being in a position of judgment or control over others.

The known but "unintended consequences" of prosecuting US citizens for "self-medicating" without a doctors note is the empowerment and guaranteed profits - and therefore enabling / encouragement - and therefore complicity / aiding & abetting of the criminal mentality and those foolish / ignorant / weak enough to go down that path.

The Justice Department therefore supports drug dealers and drug trafficking - despite it's going through the motions to appear to be fighting it by way of the average little guy while billions of dollars are made annually by big time drug traffickers, but hey - business is bombing for the courts and prisons.

    • The Moral Values
Abu bin Adam was born in the city of heat and dust (Multan Pakistan) and few yards away from his home there was a cemetery and a heavenly light used to live there whose name was Human Faith. The heavenly light told Abu to look at the tallest tree in the cemetery where the Golden Eagles have risen their chicks, after a few seconds a chick fell from the tree and landed on the ground. The parents of the chick, the two golden eagles came down and tended the chick. The heavenly light attracted Abu to see what the chick will do and how the parents will help him get back to the nest, the chick tried to fly but he couldn’t because he wasn’t old enough to, both parents stayed with the chick to protect him from other predators, everyday the chick tried to fly but couldn’t, after seven days he finally succeeded and flew to the tree and sat on a branch near his nest. It was a surprise for Abu to see that the chick and the parents did not lose heart made many attempts but succeeded in the end. Seeing this, a ray of hope shown on Abu’s face, the heavenly light told Abu that failure is the pillar of success in kids life and said that the Greek king Dionysius’s people were suffering from pain and sicknesses we showed him how to produce wine (Abay-Anhub) from the grapes and give the art and wisdom to keep his people happy and we made Abraham PBUH a good man who is not a Christian, Muslim, Hindu, or a Jew who is just a upright man for his family and for moral values. Heavenly light gave Abraham PBUH wisdom and the stone (Asfud) from paradise and moral values for human kind. Time went by quick and Abu happen to be here in United State driving livery when he met a girl who have three children from three different fathers and all fathers are in jail. Abu’s job is to take her to the Methadom clinic everyday and bring her back home, and her youngest four year old child saw Abu as a male role model who is there every day and the child called Abu daddy, Abu looked in the kids eyes and cried and asked God (Rab) what happened to Abrahams PBUH moral values.

Blessing on humanity (Rabi) from Mehdi and Adam the father and the son with Holy Spirit!

Human faith teaches not only moral values it can give realistic purpose of achieving complete fulfillment of internal life. Our method of understanding both the universe and life is based on unlimited confidence in individual by teaching respect of human life. Human faith is Mehdi’s and Adam’s monotheistic faith and knows that God is the creator and overseer of the universe at all the time and all matters. It is time to modernize our faith by adopting true faith and educate mankind in accordance with basic principle of life. Our vision is to introduce true human religion by mobilizing communities and faiths around the world to improve people’s lives .Our mission is to strength the bond of humanity (Rabi) by introducing human faith religion.
IN GOD (Rab) WE TRUST WE HAVE FAITH IN HUMANITY (Rabi).
Rabi has many meaning in our language.
      1. Rabi is Book of Human Faith.
      2. Rabi is brain.
      3. Rabi is humanity.
      4. Rabi is our tongue.

    • Prisons need to work on the attitudes of both the inmates and the guards, the way the guards treat the prisoners, and the way the prisoners treat each other.

    • About time they do something. I'm sure the drug laws create criminals out of nice people. People don't quit using drugs when someone else chooses they quit. They will only ever quit when they choose to.

    • i've always wondered how the flag waving idiots could call the US the "land of the free" when 1 in 99 americans was in prison and 1 in 33 was going through the prison system in some form.

that doesn't sound like freedom to me. it sounds like...fascism or maybe tyranny (I always get my political titles mixed up).

So props to Webb. Big ups!

    • Sen. Webb is, at least bringing dialogue to the issues. Following could be interesting and cause considerable noise amongst the more consertative in our population.

    • About damn time, get ready folks if he can get this going you are going to see one of the most interesting battles of good vs. political interest. This will ultimately show whether politicians are in pocket due to the amount of evidence that will be introduced.

    • 'Voices of Reason' in their own words, talking about the herb cannabis hemp.

"Two of my favorite things are sitting on my front porch smoking a pipe of sweet hemp, and playing my Hohner harmonica." - Abraham Lincoln (from a letter written by Lincoln during his presidency to the head of the Hohner Harmonica Company in Germany)

"Hemp is of first necessity to the wealth & protection of the country."
      - Thomas Jefferson, U.S. President

"Make the most you can of the Indian Hemp seed and sow it everywhere."
      - George Washington, U.S. President

"We shall, by and by, want a world of hemp more for our own consumption."
      - John Adams, U.S. President

"Penalties against possession of a drug should not be more damaging to an individual than the use of the drug itself; and where they are, they should be changed. Nowhere is this more clear than in the laws against possession of marihuana in private for personal use... Therefore, I support legislation amending Federal law to eliminate all Federal criminal penalties for the possession of up to one ounce of marihuana." - Jimmy Carter, U.S. President

"I inhaled frequently. That was the point." - Barack Obama, U.S. President

"The war on drugs has been an utter failure. We need to rethink and decriminalize our nation's marijuana laws." -Barack Obama, January 2004

"The illegality of cannabis is outrageous, an impediment to full utilization of a drug which helps produce the serenity and insight, sensitivity and fellowship so desperately needed in this increasingly mad and dangerous world." - Carl Sagan, renown scientist, astronomer, astrochemist, author and TV host

    • Good news if it passes. 18 months does seem like a really long time. 3 weeks on Current and they know most of what they needed ;)

    • It's a step in the right direction, but I hope it doesn't take 18 months. America needs voices of reason TODAY! Before the private prison system becomes to big to fail!
