Gay scholarship material draws protest from Baptist church in GA

CORDELE — Crisp County Board of Education has been asked to ban the presence of scholarship applications designated for gay students at the high school.

Superintendent Dr. Judy Bean received a complaint this week from a local minister regarding scholarships offered by an organization openly supportive of homosexuality. The applications are reportedly available in the guidance office of Crisp County High School.

Rev. Tony Register of Wenona Baptist Church went directly to Dr. Bean as soon as he received a copy of the flyer which he said was displayed on a table among other scholarship materials.

“It is nothing more than a solicitation for homosexuality,” said Register. “To me it openly offers the opportunity to be ‘paid’ by voluntarily coming forth and admitting homosexuality or your support of the homosexual agenda.

“I think it is an outrage and should not be allowed in our schools.”

The scholarship is offered by Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG). According to the flyer, applications for scholarships for $5,000, $2,500, or $1,000 are available.

Before completing the form to apply for one of the scholarships, applicants must meet the following eligibility requirements:

• Be a graduating senior entering higher education for the first time in 2009 (2008 graduates who take a year off are still eligible).

• Self identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) or as a straight ally.

• Demonstrate an interest in service to the LGBT community.

• Apply to an accredited higher education institution.

According to Dr. Bean, she and members of the board were unaware of the flyer’s presence in the school. In a phone interview, Dr. Bean revealed she had learned that this was not the first year the PFLAG scholarship flyer had been on display in the school.

    • Anyone who supports the ban for these scholarships are ignorant themselves. Look at other scholarships and compare them. You have to meet certain standards to qualify. Also, did you forget the rules and regulations that come with offering scholarships? If you have the money, you have every right to spend it however you want. These companies that offer scholarships submit their "own" standards.

This is dumb. Get a life people.

    • Well, that was the whole point of this story. There are so many special interest groups that offer scholarships and should be grateful in this slumping economy that they still help those in need. May we not agree with the organizations message, it still provides much needed help.

    • NRA Civil Rights Defense Fund .. so would those against Guns say it's terrible for an organization like that to sponsor scholarships? And should we then ban them from helping students that need the funds? Does that mean the student who accepts the funds from the NRA will eventually become a gun toting lunatic?

    • Shame that the Baptists had to complain about that. Many familes need these contributions, without help they can not afford highschool. The fact that it is sponsored by LGBT has nothing to do with it. They support familes and friends of somebody who is Gay and may have issues because of that.

    • You can lie as much as you want, the organization that receives the applications can still screen you and decide on who will receive the scholarship. There are many people that can not afford highschool and that is what scholarships are for. It doesn't matter what the students are, gay, straight or have 2 heads .. it goes by the qualifications that the scholarship provider sets.

Do a check on high school admissions on the Internet. You will find that most high schools if not all of them now have restricted funding and scholarships are a must for many communities. I think the reason many object is because of the message that this organization sends. We need to remember that they are a support group for Families, friends and supporters of gay men or women. They function much like any other support group such as Alcoholics Anonymous etc. They meet in churches and other public space that is donated to them. They take up collections at meetings and that is the money they spend on scholarships. Don't let the word gay stand in your way of providing for a better education.

    • Giving a homosexual scholarship ..???? Any school can give whatever scholarship they chose, christian, public, closed, private or stand on their head school. Thats a right of the school, not the organization that will provide the money.

    • Say NO to this scholarship.

Ignoring anti-homosexuality, there is no way to prove if a person is actually gay or lying. There is probably many men that will claim to be gay or do one gay thing for $5,000.

Additionally public schools should not be giving scholarships to one type or group of people anyway. A public school giving a homosexuality scholarship is just as controversial as a public school giving an only-Christian scholarship. They are public tax paid schools provided by and for everyone, Catholics, atheists, homosexuals, or heterosexuals. Public schools are not their to help one certain group.

Why say no to the scholarship?..Then you might as well say no to any scholarship that has certain criteria to meet..or helps a certain group..

A public school has a diverse setting..so who cares if they have a gay scholarship..its bad enough that kids that are gay have a hard time coming out to peers or be themselves without the negative feedback in schools..and now they cant get a scholarship like anybody else? this is the problem in the LGBT community..no support..

Honestly there are a lot of scholarships for minorities that you could lie on the application and they would never know if you were white or not.

I also remember trying for a scholarship that required an essay on the importance of fire safety. I didn't get it but even if I did I still wouldn't check my smoke detectors every month.

    • Shame isn't it. They mean well, it's a good organization that spends it's collection money (yes they operate as AA or any support group does by individual collections) on giving somebody who cares a scholarship. There are thousands of scholar ship funds in this Country, just because this one touches on gay subject doesn't make it any less valuable for some student that needs the money to attend school.

    • The scholarship is provided by PFLAG and hence they should be able to stipulate any qualifications they want. G.E., Disney, Capital One and thousands of other companies and organizations do .. so only because this is an organization that supports Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays it turns into a Paid to be gay propaganda?? Come on Rev. you can even start your own scholarship fund if you like. Only requirement you can have is to be a Baptist..?
