Cattle Ranchers Poisoning African Lions

Image

The African lion is in danger of becoming extinct, with a population that's diminished by as much as 85 percent over the past 20 years. As Bob Simon reports, cattle ranchers are killing them by poisoning them with a cheap American pesticide to protect their herds.

=================

This is terrible and the company that manufactures the pesticide furadan, FMC Corporation, should stop either stop exporting it to African countries or should change its composition so that it is not tasteless and odorless to prevent ranchers from deliberately poisoning lions and other wildlife.

    • SAVE THE LIONS !!! You know the more I hear about how American companies are producing poisons that can be so easily misused, the more I loathe how unethical and inconscionable that is. Did you know that organic farmers use nicotinic acid from tobacco as a biological way to control pests ? They spray trees in the Spring to keep insects away from harming them. This method is safe for animals because they can smell the pungent scent of tobacco, and stay away. Organic repellants, not poisons, are the intelligent way to preserve mamals. I'll bet if the people over there in Africa weren' so poor and nearly defenseless against the big money corruption which
      Fascist Corporations overpower them with, they'd have made this needless trajedy a Felony which they'd have already been effectively enforcing against. What majestic and wonderfuly beautiful and feeling creatures Lions are. There was a story on Current.com which I blogged during the Winter. It told about how a couple brought up a lion cub they saved, until they had to release him in the wild. Heartsick and lonely for the welfare of their adopted family member, the couple went to search for him until they found him.
      When they did, the marvel of a fully grown lion, standing up and cuddling and nuzzeling with his human adopted parents was truely impressive. The lion was fully grown, with a family of his own by then, who stood around wondering too. These creatures are
      too valuable to destroy without humans loosing all that makes them human. I love Africa because anywhere that could be home for such beautiful creatures as Lions, is a habitat worth saving.
