A Free Republic Depends On Citizens Bearing Arms

Almost every time a gun is used in a homicide, a chorus of special interests calls for gun control. These calls happened after the shootings at University of Texas in 1966 and in Columbine, Colo., in 1999 and more recently at Virginia Tech University where a student rampaged through the campus killing 33.

There was an organized outcry at Virginia Tech for banning guns. This was farcical since Virginia Tech, like most college campuses, was already a gun-free zone.
On March 22, a prison parolee and felon, 26-year-old Lovelle Mixon, shot and killed four police officers in Oakland, Calif. The officers were upstanding citizens leaving behind families. The incident was predictably followed by a call for banning guns. Even if California had total gun control laws, it would not have prevented the killing of the four officers. Felons already are banned from acquiring weapons.

Felons are antisocial beings who do not follow laws. Not surprisingly, when they want a gun they obtain it illegally. Criminals use the underworld, not legitimate businesses to obtain guns. The Cato Institute has noted that since 1978, when the Washington, D.C., gun ban went into effect, violent crimes rose 55 percent. The same phenomenon has been reported in Australia in 1996, in England in 1997 and the Canadian 2003 gun bans. Preventing citizens from having guns increased violent incidents.

    • "Militias",interpreted the way the founding fathers understood the term to mean, is a SELF "well regulated" body; at BEST with limited state involvement,....frequently set up by townships. Yeah,....just like warlords in Afghanistan,...just like that. So before someone wants to use "well regulated" as a loophole to disarm their neighbors,....think about it. Hunting has nothing to do with it,.....and if you want to INSIST that a citizen has 12 friends with guns, you will just more actively encourage small groups and cults etc. of gun buds. Not that it would be a bad thing,...but that IS the way things would evolve. GUNS ARE HERE, WHY FEAR?GET OVER IT!

    • As the wars in the middle east, and the DODs own 2002 Millennium Challenge war game have shown, a small dedicated, and cunning militia can take on and potentially defeat much larger opponents.

The enemies strengths are their weaknesses.

    • The founding fathers were just fucking with us when they wrote the second amendment. Its got to be the poorest sentance ever written and they are just sitting back laughing as we debate.

Even if the government declared war against one of the states I doubt they would ever bomb them. What is really more important is that it is completely within their capabilities.

    • And to those of you who think we should outlaw assault weapons, what do you all think will happen when the government shows up on the door steps of the people who have them and want to take them away? Do you all think we will willingly hand over these guns? or do you think there will be large amounts of blood shed? Because I for one can tell you this, I won't be handing over any guns to any one for any reason. I will never give up my rights to anyone for any reason. I will die fighting the powers that be if that's what it takes and the are tens of thousands of people like me out there. Don't fool yourself. We won't give them up.

    • There has been guns in my family for as long as I know of my family being in this country. I have never heard of one incident where someone was accidently harmed. Obviously I know it does happen. But just because accidents happen doesn't mean we should outlaw everything that causes these accidents.

    • a free republic depends on it's citizens being engaged.
america's problem is its citizens are fat lazy slobs. guns or no guns.

last I checked with police processes professor, and I did because I thought about purchasing a gun, you really are more likely to injure yourself or someone you know with a handgun than you are to protect yourself.

two. where do these criminals get these weapons. don't a lot of them obtain them by robbing people who legally own them? wouldn't it be harder for them to obtain if it was harder for EVERYONE to obtain? especially ridiculous weapons like fucking assault rifles and .50 cals etc etc.
