The Vermont House and Senate voted to override the gubernatorial veto on same-sex marriage. Vermont is officially the first state in the country to legalize same-sex marriage through the legislative process and the fourth state in the country to recognize same-sex marriage. Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, and Vermont legalized same-sex marriage. New York recognizes marriages from these states, Canada, and the 18,000 California same-marriages that were licensed before Prop 8 passed.

***UPDATE: HRC’s David Smith, vice president of programs, just sent out this congratulatory statement to the HRC family:

Just moments ago, Vermont representatives joined their colleagues in the State Senate in voting to override the governor’s veto and make Vermont the first state in the Union to enact marriage equality through the legislative process. Lesbian and gay couples can begin marrying in the Green Mountain State on September 1.

As with most legislative victories, this one did not happen overnight. In fact, today’s votes are the result of years of work. At the Human Rights Campaign, we sent several action alerts and phoned our members in Vermont more than once over the past weeks and months. And we’ve been having strategic conversations with leaders at the Vermont Freedom to Marry Task Force since last year. Perhaps most significantly, our national field director Marty Rouse has travelled to Vermont several times this year and has been on the ground since yesterday calling in every chit he has from his many years helping elect Democrats to the State Senate and House. We are inspired by the many courageous lawmakers who stood their ground today and stood for equality, and we are proud that our own Marty Rouse helped elect so many of those lawmakers during their first campaigns for office. It is certainly no exaggeration to say that today’s result would not have been possible without Marty’s efforts.

We will soon go to the roof (twice in one week!) to hang the flag of another state that recognizes that all loving and committed couples should be treated equally.

    • This is great news! It shows that equality can be maintained not just by judges but also by the demand of the people themselves. I hope this trend of marriage equality gets the other 46 states to realize that popular opinion in favor of equality can be codified into law through legislation.

    • this is horrible news..but i think gay marriage will eventually gain all the rights gay people ask for..since its "discrimination" to not give these different people their rights and also society is always pushing for new boundaries..is gay marriage right.i don't think so...and who determines whats right and wrong?..well that's a whole different argument..but actually if we can answer that question..this issue along with many others would be solved

It common sense really and very simple to understand. To make babies you need an erect penis and moist vagina. In other words, a male and female species. Don’t even get me started about sex alteration surgery. That is a whole other crazy.

Back to the point… Gay people strive to be different due to some mental trauma as a child. I hate to be blunt but this is the case most of the time. The left over are a by-product of popularity by extreme measures and/or major drug usage. This has nothing to do with politics or religion. I know my view is harsh but if you dig deep you know I am correct even though you will never admit it.

Gozy, don't even attempt to play the reproduction card, this planet is overpopulated and we will all eventually suffer because of that.

      @ loftyer

Being gay is not a choice, I am sure at one point in our lives many of us would have chosen to be straight over being ridiculed, attacked, and discriminated. Did you make a conscious decision to be attracted to the gender you're attracted to?
      Neither did I.

You're on the losing side of history if you continue to allow yourself to be consumed by such blatant ignorance.

      Gozy, you must be joking.

Assuming you aren't, I'm gay, always have been, and never suffered trauma. There are gay penguins, gay dogs, and gay dolphins as well (it's unlikely they suffered emotional trauma either).

Also: your logic would require that only FERTILE, hetero couples be allowed to marry. Your logic could also extend to disallowing single parenting.

Gozy thinks only marriages which produce children are valid!

basically it comes down to moral standards...and who determines the moral standards is big question these days with many issues such as this one..its def not God for many and the government is wack..so i guess its just human reasoning..some judgment calls are easy such as murder..we can all agree murder is wrong because it causes most people to feel pain...but other issues such as gay marriage, are a little bit harder to decide right from wrong..if we are going by human common sense that is..personally.I think gay marriage is a sexual disorder..whether you are born with it or simple choose to be gay is irrelevant..fact is the majority of people that are considered sexually normal like the opposite sex. So like all people with disorders..gay people just need help..now what kind of help they need?..well idk..might be psychological..might be medical..time and more research into the area will tell

So if marriage and "moral" relationships have to be solely about having babies... then straight couples who don't have children or can not reproduce shouldn't be allowed to get married???

Homosexuality just is, it's not an issue of right or wrong, live and let live.

Aside from all the propaganda and pure nonsense from the religious zealots, why is it so difficult for you to live and let live? It's elementary, mind your own business.

OK all I have to say is that Gay people are population control, we have been around as long as everyone else and have been accepted in society at various points in history. You see it everywhere in nature and in humans! The earth would have been over populated a long time ago if it wasn't for us! America is not happy unless they have a group the collective can discriminate against. It wasn't that long ago blacks did not have many rights...even a white person could not marry a black person. Gay is the black! Until of course we find someone even more different everyone can hate or say is evil!

donkey - exactly, all this fuss over 10% of the population. I don't care if gay's get married, it doesn't affect me at all, let them get married and be gay and happy until kingdom come.

faux - "I am sure at one point in our lives many of us would have chosen to be straight over being ridiculed, attacked, and discriminated"

I've heard this argument so many times but it still makes me shake my head. Being gay is a choice. Don't go off citing animal references, I don't give a shit about gay penguins or gay ducks, human beings are vastly more complex beings than a bloody penguin. Gay people choose to be gay for the same reason goth kids choose to be goth, or kids wear ridiculous clothes and 10 inch mohawks. They want to be different, simple as that.

Actually, Ares, it is widely accepted by the medical community that sexual orientation begins in the womb. It's really no more of a disorder than being left handed.

      Ares

I could see how a closeted bisexual would think that it's a choice being that they are attracted to both sexes, but I have no attraction to women and I never had a say in that.

Did you make a conscious decision to be attracted to the gender or genders you're attracted to Ares? Neither did I. It was something I prayed would change over night when I was a Christian. I am happy now and you are on the losing side of history.

Many homosexual leaders have admitted that
there is a natural link between
a homosexual orientation and child sexual abuse.

      • A1989 study in the Journal of Sex
Research noted that “. . . the proportion
of sex offenders against male children
      among homosexual men is substantially
larger than the proportion of sex offenders
      against female children among
      heterosexual men . . . the development
of pedophilia is more closely linked
      with homosexuality than with heterosexuality.”
      8

      • A1988 study of 229 convicted child
molesters published in the Archives of
Sexual Behavior found that 86% of pedophiles
      described themselves as homosexual
      or bisexual.9

      • In a 1984 Journal of Sex and Marital
      Therapy article, sex researchers found
      that “The proportional prevalence of
      [male] offenders against male children
in this group of 457 offenders against
      children was 36 percent.”10

      • Homosexual activists Karla Jay and
Allen Young revealed in their 1979 Gay
Report that 23% of all homosexuals
have acted as “chicken hawks” — that
is, they have preyed on adolescent or
      younger boys.11

      • In a 1992 study published in the Journal
of Sex and Marital Therapy, sex
      researchers K. Freud and R. I. Watson
found that homosexual males are three
times more likely than straight men to
engage in pedophilia, and that the average
      pedophile victimizes between 20
and 150 boys before being arrested.12
