This was murder, plain and simple. Had it been another person, a non-cop, that pushed Tomlinson, they would surely be charged and thrown in jail. I hope these police get the treatment they deserve.

Do the protestors know the intrinsic idea of their protests or are they anarchists simply looking for a riot?
Or are they defending the right to express free thought about our rage against our financial rape.More will die like this...
Look at yourselves in the mirror in the morning and question whether you have made a difference to our country's direction. I can't wait to walk out proudly in my pinstripes today! How many policemen's family members where in with the G20 global economic crisis and protests crowd?

Here in the States, our police have been castrated and are impotent due to political correctness and are now being killed by crazy gun men. Perhaps if some of the UK police agression rubbed off on the American police, we would have a balance and noone would get killed. Ha! Wishful thinking.

The officer who pushed Ian Tomlinson finally came forward. It took almost a week. How would any common person be treated if they took a week to come forward about an incident like this?

Now thirty years since Blair Peach was murdered, a peaceful man that met a very un peaceful end at the hands of the police
During the same day of protest Clarence Baker, the pacifist manger of Misty in Roots, was hurt so badly by police that he went into a coma.
I like to think we have come so far but events like this prove otherwise

Murder 1
So sad at a peaceful protest that the guardians of law and order yet again are the ones breaking the law.

The IPCC is finally considering an independent inquiry into this incident. Thus far the City of London police force has been carrying out the investigation even though its own members were involved in policing the protests. Conflict of interest much? I'm surprised the IPCC appointed the City of London force in the first place. Does anyone else feel like this whole situation has been an exercise in backtracking? And where is the official autopsy report?
BTW, listen to Helen Shaw's reaction to the video footage, and how it's not surprising that it's come out, and how the police put out information to deflect attention from their involvement.

This is really shocking. It's good that technology and user generated content is going to make the police more accountable for their actions, but at the same time, most police are good and it's a pity a few have to ruin it for the rest.

You serious?
Even if he mouthed off I dont think he deserved that really. He wasnt even a protester was he? Its been said he was on his way home from work.
He smashed his head on the floor when they shoved him, im no doctor but i think that probably played quite a big part

The footage is certainly worrying. The case needs to be investigated seriously and properly. Of course, the police officers involved will and should also have the important right to put their account and be heard as part of that, I'm guessing facts about Tomlinson's health will come into this.. and of course 'dilute' the enquiry itself.

I've watched this and read some of the eye witness interviews this man was definately pushed AND hit his head hard on the pavement. He died withn 20 min. to 1/2 hour. This was possibly a homicide.
His family must get an independent autopsy.
There's another picture of him walking away after the altercation and he has an injury on his forehead! - 3 years ago

Ceasefire has published a very good article about the policing of the G20 protests, raising important questions. Good read.

Did the bobby hit him in the kidney with his stick? He does have a stick.
Definitely hit him from behind as he was walking away from them.
Unless he was involved with them before the video it looks like he was just in their way and didn't move out of their way fast enough without knowing they were there.
Wonder what the official Cause Of Death is? The family needs to get an independent autopsy to determine the COD. - 3 years ago

Whats really weird and crazy is that the government have passed laws allowing officers to arrest people filming or taking photographs of police whereas this seems like the public's only real means of defense.

Its bit too simular to the way de Menezes information was released. In the way that the public statements made by the police did not fully show the true events and are proven to be different from reality.
The camera is shakey, but wouldn't be surprised if the investigation looks at the CCTV footage to get clear view of the policeman attack.
Plus, sure not all police agree with that one riot squad guys action, but i bet there's no easy/confidential way for them to report against another officers (if there is, then it's not working)

See the witness statement by a person with Diabetes in the comments. With all the reports coming in, it's a wonder not more people got severely hurt or ended up dead. It's a disgrace and not worth the name democracy.

The conduct of the Police that day was shameful.
Whoever was in charge of the entire operation made big mistakes, and the dead of Ian Tomlinson is a consequence of these mistakes.
But worse than the conduct of the Police that day was their attempt to get rid of the responsibility for the death, attributing it to "natural causes" and sending press-releases to the media blaming the protesters for "throwing a wall of missiles while the man was being helped by the Police."
While Police itself had several cameraman and photographers there to furthr identify potential "criminals", it was the Police itself that needed to be filmed by a member of the crowd, so that evidence for their actions existed.
