Push for Transgender protection reaches N.H. - What Bathroom to use!

BOSTON -- For Ethan St. Pierre, allowing someone who is biologically female but self-identifies as male to use the men's bathroom is a no-brainer.

"Look at me," said St. Pierre, who was born a woman but is now a transgender man with a beard and short hair. "I don't want to get hurt by some woman who thinks I'm in the ladies' room for the wrong reasons. I mean, clearly I don't belong there."

St. Pierre, of Haverhill, was one of hundreds of advocates at a Tuesday rally supporting a bill that would add "gender identity and expression" to Massachusetts' discrimination and hate crimes laws. He said having this legislation would have protected him from being fired in 2003 from his job as a security supervisor because he became a man.

But opponents of the measure have deemed it "a bathroom bill," saying it would lead to a breakdown in privacy and public safety in rest rooms, locker rooms, showers and other single-sex facilities. They contend the law would open women's bathrooms to sexual predators.

    • Thanks for your input Nuclear. Yes, there are numerous situations that can be difficult for anybody that has TS/TG issues. I guess most of those issues can be settled on a one-on-one basis such as the massage, they should probably tell the therapist in advance. Public showers would probably be out. I think the piece of legislation that is discussed in this article focuses on the right of the person to use the male bathroom (Since it is a female to male TG person) I guess a 3rd bathroom could be used. Question would be how many restaurants and bars or public facilities would have the space and or the budget to make room for additional bathrooms.

    • I have many transexual friends! The bathroom issue is one that I don't really understand too much! My friends are Male to female, but most still have a penis! They use the female bathrooms most of the time, but they say some places with public showers like some campgrounds are an issue, because you can't really walk in to a public shower with other ladies around & disrobe! Also hard is massage therapy, as that is often done nude! A friend actually told me about a trip to a message therapist & how the female therapist reacted to my friend's penis! I don't know what the bathroom issue is,but as I am a very strong supporter of transexual rights,I would gladly sing any papers to get third sex bathrooms if that's what people want! Thailand already has a few third gender bathrooms!

    • I guess those are some of the issues this legislation is facing. It is not only the right of the Transgender person that is at stake, we also have the general public to consider. Now we should note, this issue is specific to the use of Restrooms. Other legal issues are separate from this legislation.

    • First: I have no problem with Transgender people. It must be a difficult situation to be in. I know it's a psychological and medical issue and I won't argue that. Second: I agree, how does the general public know who is who/what.? So do we allow anybody to cross into bathrooms, lockers and other public space that is typically reserved for one sex or the other? We can't ask for ID because the ID has been changed by Court Order. We can't very well ask them to pull their pants down, and even with that some surgeries are so successful it would be difficult to tell. It's a dilemma.

    • I would not want that guy in a female bathroom. The issue really is that you have no way of knowing if this is a trans' person. Many good looking gals and girls you can not tell. So what if we start allowing them in because they say so .. that means any dude can say "Hey I was actually a woman that had sex reasignment" .. how do we know!? If they did, I have no problem with it because then they are women or men.

    • Well, at first glance. I would not think this guy belongs in a women's bathroom. Not sure about you. transgender issues are nothing new. Many, especially Male to Female transgender individuals have difficulties in everyday life in areas like Public Bathrooms, locker rooms, showers and other public areas that typically allow entry based on "sex". Discussion?
