Elaine Bernard, Executive Director of the Trade Union Program at Harvard Law School, explains the various ways that the US legal system inhibits worker organization. Above all, believes Elaine, the Taft-Hartley Act, a post-World War II bill that brought about the 'right to work' principle, stands as a continuing systemic challenge for unions.
Elaine Bernard is the executive director of the Labor and Worklife Program at Harvard Law School. Bernard's writings often focus on workers in the telecommunications industry, and the role technological change plays in altering work. In the last several years, she has publicly discussed how advancing technology will change how labor unions function (especially in regard to member-to-member and union-member communication and organizing).

correcting the balance of power between unions and industry has always been an obstacle. Florida is the 2nd largest cattle producing state in the US, but since there are no unions in Florida, the cattle is shipped to union shops in other states for slaughter, then re-purchased for retail sale in Florida. hence, $21.99 for ribeye,$18.99 for filet mignon, etc. Unions have been one of the backbones of America for decades, but problems like these are absurd....what's the answer, more gov't intervention?

Unions are a good thing...in theory. However, ever work with a Union employee? These people can never be fired, unless they burn down the place...now matter how grossly incompetent they are.
Not surprisingly, many Federal civilian workers are unionized...which explains how many can sit around and do nothing. I see it every day.

Oh yes, did I also mention, they drive down hourly wages, with their dues collections. When I was putting myself through college, I did a job in a union store, I made 6.50 an hour. My girlfriend worked at a non-unionized Wegmans Supermarket...same job...9.75.

False. And yes, I have worked Union before. Unions drive wages UP. All you have to do is look at the numbers.
Secondly, being a member of a Union does NOT protect you from being fired for incompetence. That is a myth, unless it was negotiated specifically into the Contract, and if that is the ACTUAL case, and not just a subjective opinion, then I say to the Union that has THAT contract...YOU GO!

Once again we need too support the employee free choice act. Unions have been under attack for 60 years.
