Apparently the 15% rise in foundation sales and the 2.5% rise in the number of lipsticks being sold is because, according to actual real-life, qualified-with-letters-after-her-name-and-everything psychotherapist Lucy Beresford, “literally putting on a brave face is a psychological boost and helps people deal with the stress and strain of economic worries.”
Surely this is nonsense? Aren't women buying more make up because the weather's better or something or are we really meant to believe that in times of economic crisis, women cope by making themselves look pretty and smell nice?

This is such crap. I sort of hope this has a profoundly negative effect on Miss. Beresford's "psychology" career. But she's already sold out to cheap papers and big companies so I'm sure she can't take herself seriously anymore.

Nice to hear of uplifting reawakenings and self-care that go beyond the physical dip-yourself-in-mud-spa's. There have also been too many recent headlines suggesting we are a prozac nation.
But what about men?

Of course this is nonsense. It's a PR story packaged to look like news.
"A staggering 82 per cent of women said it “cheers them up” and helps them feel more confident, according to a survey for top beauty firm L’Oreal."If this was an independent survey on how women are coping with the recession, putting on lipstick wouldn't be very near the top of the list.
The findings of this "research" (PR) was sold to readers of the Telegraph last week as a new form of stretching exercise to help improve balance. Considering the older reader demographic of that paper and you see that the same press release was tailored to exploit the fear of falling among older women to sell some lipstick. Boo.
