Experimental stem cells treatment for diabetics stops need their for Insulin

A stem cell treatment in Brazil, involving 20 type-1 diabetics, has led to 12 of these no longer requiring insulin for a long period of time, some for up to 5 years so far. This is no self proclaimed cure for the condition, some of those involved relapsed and needed to use insulin again (although this was always in a smaller dose).

The treatment stopped the immune system from killing the pancreatic islets which regulate blood sugar, by releasing the hormone insulin.

There is some speculation about the results produced, as the patients were required to take immunosuppressant drugs as part of the study, or may simply have been receiving better care than usual.
