Texas Gov. Rick Perry Threatens to Secede from Nation

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry fired up an anti-tax "tea party" Wednesday with his stance against the federal government and for states' rights as some in his U.S. flag-waving audience shouted, "Secede!"

An animated Perry told the crowd at Austin City Hall -- one of three tea parties he was attending across the state -- that officials in Washington have abandoned the country's founding principles of limited government. He said the federal government is strangling Americans with taxation, spending and debt.

Perry repeated his running theme that Texas' economy is in relatively good shape compared with other states and with the "federal budget mess." Many in the crowd held signs deriding President Barack Obama and the $786 billion federal economic stimulus package.

Perry called his supporters patriots. Later, answering news reporters' questions, Perry suggested Texans might at some point get so fed up they would want to secede from the union, though he said he sees no reason why Texas should do that.

"There's a lot of different scenarios," Perry said. "We've got a great union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that. But Texas is a very unique place, and we're a pretty independent lot to boot."

    • One more thing I read all the post and almost every post against this is just insults and name calling. I think it makes me feel good. My father told me when I was young that if I am not sure what side of an argument to choose. Look for the side yelling and insulting rather than intelligent debating. all I'm hearing is "you big stupid dumb" "redneck" etc. I'm born and raised in California. I'm not even from Texas and I want to move there if they leave. why? Not because of a black president. Not because of any of the issues I'm hearing. Because our government is stomping on the constitution and writing laws that snake around it. Hitler used the same wording when he created his own version of the patriot act. and that scares me. I agree we have no business going to war. leave them all to their own troubles and we wont piss anyone off like we have. but DON"T TREAD ON MY CONSTITUTION ! that's why.

    • You know what makes me smile? that so many think Texas leaving the union is stupid. Why ? more room for me. Ill be there. its about keeping the dollar out of the gov. Corporate America . Go back and read the The Declaration Of Independence, and the US Constitution. I would rather be apart of a poor new republic then a sheep in this one. I love the idea of America. but your not living in what our founding fathers wanted the USA to be. Ben Franklin Warned of this. So did others. We gave blood to be free of a King and a central bank and everyone of you celebrate it every forth of July, and yet back then there were people saying what you are saying now about us failing if we left the thumb of England. People are blind to the truth. and I'm fine with that we want the real thing and wont mind being neighbors with the Union. We just want a better nation. well let you vist promise :) you can let everything stay the same and live your way. We want to live a different way. based on the original design for USA.

      Oh, and the question of why Texas is complaining if Texas' economy is doing well????? really? BECAUSE THEY DONT WANT TO PAY YOUR EXTENDED BILLS. going this way soon all states will fail economically

      Perhaps I can shed some light on these people for you. Republicans know that most people in the US grew up during the cold war, so they use a left over fear of communism to control people. As you can see this only works on idiots because the cold war has been over for a long time now.

And you may not know this but we are like a whole other Country :) Do you know in Texas you can still take your Truck to the Beach your Dog your Beer your Music and yes you can still Smoke on the Beach. Go to Calfornia and try doing any of those things on the beach!! And dont worry about our boders we in Texas know what job is the Government"s and what job is not!! borders is on the short list

      Hey, chin up guys. It's not like we are hard up for morons up here in the North, either. The rhetoric really IS amazing, though. These guys had honestly and truly convinced themselves that the notion of perpetual governmental control by conservative Republicans was GOING to happen! So rather than accept the fact that they lost, they think they are going to take their marbles and go home.

      Watching the Republican Party is like watching the twin towers go down in New York. It just doesn't seem possible that something that was once so big and so commanding can be reduced to rubble so quickly. But these guys are their own worst enemies. I am sure the dipshits who showed up at the tea parties had a lot of fun trying to out-stupid each other. But MOST of the people in this country have the sense to know that this is NOT the time for all this ridiculous political drama. Secede from the UNION?!!! You mean to tell me jobs are just so plentiful in your states right now that you guys REALLY don't have anything better to do than to talk about SECESSION??? The two wars you got us into aren't bankrupting us fast enough, so you thought we needed a CIVIL WAR on which to spend all that EXTRA money we have stashed away?

      And most of them would fail so badly economically if they did this that the citizens would have a second revolt. And have not doubt that the Federal Government would come down full force on states that decide to leave just as they did in the Civil war, but worse because of the new weapons.
      Leaving the union is treason and would be treated as such.

      The other states are just proclaiming Sovereignty. Understandable after the last administration left us broke and this one trying to spend its way out of it. But, this is the first time I have heard any of them use the word "Secede." Whether or not it is an idle threat is irrelevant, it was a stupid thing to say.

      Welcome to the last gasp of sore loser southern, white conservatives. By 2016, Texas will be a swing state as the demographic shift continues.

      Texas may be lagging the general downward trend of the US economy but in six months it will have caught up. When it does, the governer will look like a dumbass for turning down the stimulus money as unemployment creeps up and revenues lag.

      Texas gets back 82 cents for every dollar it sends to the Federal Government, and by comparison most of the Northeast only gets 40 something cents.

      If Texas left the USA, the Mexicans would jump them so fast that they would not know what happened. They may be high tech, but Mexico has an overpopulation that would just run over Texas. They would become a Northern state of Mexico.
      Perry is as much as idiot as the last governor of Texas.
