NBC has confirmed that John Madden has retired and will not return to the broadcast booth next season.Said Madden in a statement: "It's time. I'm 73 years old. My 50th wedding anniversary is this fall. I have two great sons and their families and my five grandchildren are at an age now when they know when I'm home and, more importantly, when I'm not."
NBC has scheduled conference call to discuss Madden at noon ET today.

No disrespect intended, but the sound of his voice made me cringe, now I can watch football now and then again!

He did point out the obvious a lot, he spent too much time drawing on the screen, and he rambled on and on. But, he knew a lot about the game and somehow he became a major part of football. It isn't going to be the same without him.

Meh. I guess I'm in the minority but I used to hate his commentary. He used to always say the dumbest and most obvious things. Some people mentioned intelligent commentary? Really?
“Hey, the offensive linemen are the biggest guys on the field, they're bigger than everybody else, and that's what makes them the biggest guys on the field.”
"What they want to do is score a touchdown here."
"If the quarterback throws the ball in the endzone and it is caught, that's gonna be a touchdown."
"The best thing would be a touchdown and the second best thing would be a fieldgoal."
"well when your playing good football its good football and if you don't have good football then your not really playing good football"
"Ruben Brown made that play there....well I mean he missed the guy completley but he was able to create just enough room for Thomas Jones by whiffing. The air he created on the miss gave Jones enough space to score"
"The team who scores the most points will win the game."
"If they don't score any points, then they're probably not going to win the game"
"They're either going to run the ball here, or they're gonna pass it"
"A fumble is a fumble when he fumbles, and that my friend was a fumble!"

Noooooo! Some of what he says is gibberish, but I know I'm going to miss it. There's something oddly comforting about it as I've listened to him as a commentator throughout childhood and adulthood. However, he deserves to retire and spend time with his family like everyone else. Maybe the NFL can hire Frank Caliendo to imitate Madden during the games...
Some of my favorite Madden lines from watching the Packers over the years:
"And the play is blown dead. But I tell ya, if Favre had gotten that play off, I bet it was either going to be a pass or a run."
"What the Packers need to do is get the ball in the end zone, because that would be a touchdown. And touchdowns get you points."

Madden is one of the greatest ramblers of English language for all time. I have listened to him on radio almost every day for many years,.....he gave me fantastic words like, Jabloney(it basically means: crazy nut job) and he also defined what a F.I.D.O. is when playing golf(Forget it Drive On). I love all his valuable information and insight as well as all his comedic imitators. I sure hope he continues his annual BBQ and Bocce Ball tournament in the Bay Area.

I love Madden and I'm not talking about the game. I grow up watching and more listening to him. It amazed me that he could know what all the players did in the last play, tell you the critical stuff and make it fun with the way he said it.
