In his first public appearance since losing to the Obama campaign, Schmidt to the Log Cabin Republicans at their conference on Friday.
Schmidt said Republicans need to endorse civil unions and stop using the Bible as rationale for gay-marriage opposition.
"If you put public policy issues to a religious test, you risk becoming a religious party," he said. "And in a free country a political party cannot be viable in the long-term if it is seen as a sectarian party."
Even though Schmidt said he doesn't expect the GOP to have a change of heart any time soon, he supports gay marriage. His sister is out as a lesbian.

For a good look into the attitudes held by the people who are one of the most powerful, if not the most powerful element, of the GOP right now, it would be informative to look at Inofuiwell's Current posting of the National Organization for Marriage's anti-gay video.

One of the best responses to that nauseous piece by NOM is one that I found on YouTube and posted on Current.

Gay marriage and full gay rights will ultimately benefit the Republican party by removing the whole topic from politics. There won't be any battles left to fight. It will be like the civil rights victories in the 1960's.
No-one in either party today is advocating taking away someone's right to vote due to his race or saying that an individual cannot marry someone of another race. The same thing will eventually happen in both parties when full gay rights are established in this country.
This will allow the political discussion to move into other areas that are actually important. Republicans will then have the opportunity to develop real policies that will benefit the country and offer them to the public. Instead of just focusing on campaigns of fear and hatred, they can focus on winning back voters with genuine solutions to problems.
So, in the end this will be liberating for Republican politicians and will certainly benefit the few moderates who are left in the party. If they are strengthened, ordinary voters might start voting Republican again.

well it would probably split the republicans back to where they were in the 90's. In '92 and '96, fiscal conservatives and social conservatives often clashed at rallies as the fiscals didn't have the insane reactionary values. As you could see, the social conservatives became the face of the party.
If Obama's plans don't work they way people want them to, and the evangelicals no longer have control over the Republican party, then I see it making a comeback. - 2 years ago

"There is No Political Solution"
http://theblog.christogenea.org/
"Rather than trying to somehow take back the corrupted system of government, Christians are explicitly told to separate themselves from the corrupt society. Here that is evident from both the writings of Paul, and the Revelation of Yahshua Christ:
And what agreement has a temple of Yahweh with idols? For you are a temple of the living Yahweh; just as Yahweh has said, ‘I will dwell among them, and I will walk about; and I will be their God, and they will be my people.’ On which account ‘Come out from the midst of them and be separated,’ says the Prince, and ‘do not be joined to the impure, and I will admit you’.” (2 Corinthians 6:16-17, CNT)
“And I heard another voice from out of heaven, saying: “You come out from her, My people, that you should not partake in her errors, and that you would not receive from of her wounds, because her errors have built up as far as heaven and Yahweh has called to mind her injustices!” (Rev. 18:4-5, CNT)" - 2 years ago

About five years ago, I came out to the rest of the world as a lesbian. I am in a committed relationship with another woman. I don't understand why you say that homosexuality is wrong. Isn't my happiness the most important thing? Isn't that what God wants? I think that is what matters, not telling people what is right and wrong.
I didn't write the Bible. I really didn't. The Bible was written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit by wonderful men like the Apostle Paul, like Moses, people like that, very highly respected people, and right down the line, they said that homosexuality is an abomination to God. The Apostle Paul said that nobody who is a homosexual is going to get into heaven. That doesn't mean you have a tendency. It didn't say nobody with homosexual tendencies is going to miss getting into heaven.
People who are practicing homosexuals or lesbians, this is an unnatural relationship. There is no way in a "committed lesbian relationship" that you are going to conceive a baby. If two lesbians conceive a baby without the help of something else, I will admit on this program that I am wrong. But they haven't done it so far; nor have two homosexuals. It is unnatural.
Now, you say 'Doesn't God want me to be happy?' Well, this may be happiness for you now, but what is going to happen is when you die, you are going to hell (see 1 Corinthians 6:9-10). I don't want to overstate it, but that is what the Bible says: You shall not enter the kingdom of heaven, you shall not go to spend an eternity with God, and you will spend an eternity away from Him. God loves you, but He says that you cannot do something He says is an abomination and is wrong. It is just that simple. He made sex to be enjoyed, but he made it in the confines of marriage between heterosexual people, partially for the propagation of the race and the nurture and the admonition of the young. That's what it is there for.
God is not there to make us happy. Sure it is a misconception. God is there to show us what is right. What He says to do will make us happy. If we follow His principles about finance, about sex, about marriage, about love, about commitment, about all the other good things that He says, if we keep His commandments, we will be happy. It will bring us happiness. But happiness is never going to come if we do something that is sinful because He will not give you the witness of the Holy Spirit in your heart that you are doing something right. You won't have it. You won't know the overwhelming joy. The Apostle Peter talked about 'joy unspeakable and full of glory' (1 Peter 1:8). That comes about through fulfilling the plan of God and having the power of the Holy Spirit moving in your life and knowing when you die that you are going to heaven.

[Preface: Ms. CD, your earnestness is manifest and admirable. But if you're citing the Bible, you should always cite chapter and verse so readers can consider context and accuracy of translation.]
If I wanted to make my way safely and successfully through the lands on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean, I wouldn't choose a guidebook written 2,000 years ago. Its *principles* might still be sound, but its practical advice and recommendations would be woefully obsolete and irrelevant.
In this instance, the 2,000 year old advice is about the ways domestic partners should relate to one another. The principle is still sound (love, cherish, support, etc.), but the social institution the principle addresses is quite different now than it was millennia ago.
By the way, how many wives and concubines did Solomon service? Not counting the Queen of Sheba? Should we take that out of context as endorsement of polygamy and maintaining mistresses?
Enjoy the kind of marriage you believe in, Ms. CD. And allow others to enjoy the kind of marriage they believe in. They most certainly won't persecute you, and you shouldn't persecute them. They probably think your attempt to persecute them is an abomination. You certainly think that their desire to be free from your persecution is an abomination. Fair enough.
Really, though... Does their opinion hurt you? Of course not. Does your opinion hurt them? Of course not. Give it a rest, quit trying to hurt others, and focus on healing the sick and feeding the hungry.

Ms. Cindy, you gotta consider context. First, if a person doesn't already accept your preferred 17th century English translation of Hebrew and Greek texts as authoritative, then what's the point of quoting that translation to the person? Might make you feel virtuous, of course, but it won't mean diddly-squat to the person you're addressing. I have to believe you care more about helping others than just making yourself feel virtuous.
Since you quote Genesis 19, though….
1: And there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot seeing them rose up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;
2: And he said, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your ways. And they said, Nay; but we will abide in the street all night.
3: And he pressed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.4: But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter:
5: And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.
6: And Lot went out at the door unto them, and shut the door after him,
7: And said, I pray you, brethren, do not so wickedly.
8: Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof.
So what's going on here? Lot accepts two men as guests. A bunch of thugs come and ask him to let them gang rape the men. Lot says, "No. That would betray the laws of hospitality, honored in every part of the ancient world. I have two virgin daughters. I'll let you gang rape them instead." Hey! They're mere women!
Nice!
Of course these are the same daughters who, after mommy's been turned to salt and Sodom obliterated, decide they need to make babies. So they get Lot drunk, he enjoys coitus with both, and they both get pregnant.
Nice!
This is the biblical example you want us to heed? No thanks, Ms. Cindy. I'd prefer not to gang rape virgin girls or commit incest.

Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.
23 Neither shalt thou lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast to lie down thereto: it is confusion.
24 Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you:
25 And the land is defiled: therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants.
26 Ye shall therefore keep my statutes and my judgments, and shall not commit any of these abominations; neither any of your own nation, nor any stranger that sojourneth among you:
27 (For all these abominations have the men of the land done, which were before you, and the land is defiled;)
28 That the land spue not you out also, when ye defile it, as it spued out the nations that were before you.

The only good thing I thought that could come out of the '08 election was the possibility that one of the two major political parties would fracture and die. Take your pick, right or left. It doesn't matter to me. Both timidly stand by ambiguous moral and philosophical arguments that are quickly abandoned when the opportunity calls for it. Take civil rights and marriage equality for example. I don't see the Democrats rushing to champion those ideals. If so they wouldn't have elected Obama and Biden on the democratic ticket.

"There is a sound conservative argument to be made for same sex marriage. I believe conservatives, more than liberals, insist that rights come with responsibilities. No other exercise of one’s liberty comes with greater responsibilities than marriage. In a marriage, two people are completely responsible to and for each other. If you are not willing to accept and faithfully discharge those responsibilities, you shouldn’t enter the state of matrimony, and it doesn’t make a damn bit of difference if you’re straight or gay. It is a responsibility like no other, which can and should make marriage an association between two human beings more fulfilling than any other.
Many studies have shown that married people are generally happier than unmarried people. Marriage gives greater purpose to life, and, to borrow from Pastor Warren, the more purpose driven your life is, the happier it is. Marriage does not or should not depend on transitory emotions. It is a partnership in all aspects of life that changes the way not just society, but the individual perceives him or herself, and gives greater incentive to an individual to live a good and virtuous life because the happiness, not just momentary pleasure, but the lasting happiness, of others depends on it. Marriage can be a profoundly gratifying state that strengthens the virtue of individuals and societies, and increases the measure and quality of the happiness we enjoy. It seems to me a terrible inequity that any person should be denied that responsibility, and the emotional enrichment it can provide. And I cannot in good conscience exclude anyone who is prepared for such a commitment from the prospect of such happiness," - Steve Schmidt, to Log Cabin Republicans.
Steve's support for an inclusive GOP has been long and constant. This is not a gimmick. He has walked this walk.

Short answer? No.
If the GOP COMPLETELY abandons its social conservative bullshit and essentially becomes the Libertarian party, then I -MIGHT- give it some respect.
But they'd have to ditch their base to do that, who are busy sucking on the toes of Neo-con fucktards like Rush Limbaugh.
There's a split coming, a big one, if Republicans actually go through with this. Because their base wants to go FURTHER right.

Agreed. The GOP is going to have to do some soul searching. And if it wants to survive its gonna have to get rid of some of its base.
Its base is what turns independents away in the first place. When they saw the hate-filled signs in the McCain-Palin rallies, many were turned off.
A Republican can't win in his own party unless he panders to the far right, but that in turn turns off independents. They're caught in a dilemma that will take them a while to fix.

holyshiite I will explain it to you. It has to be marriage because of all the disparaged groups ever throughout history and by most religions in the world, homosexuals have been vilified, reviled, disparaged, insulted, persecuted, murdered, smeared, legislated against, and tortured. That is why it has to be marriage. It has to be in the most holy of places because of the unholy war that has been waged and millions who have already passed. It can't be separate but equal and call it Civil Unions. That is why.

Civil Union or Marriage? Which is it? Is it not enough to have support for all the trimmings of marriage, like health insurance, survivors' benefit, estate transfers, unlimited gift exemptions, spousal IRA rules, etc. That is already in the law and avaiable in many states. Most Republicans would not oppose seeing it in their state as well.
But that is not enough. Calling it anything but marriage is somehow inequality and must be fought for to the death by your stupid leaders. Marriage IS a religious sacrement. It is also a civil contract between a man and a woman. Call gay "marriage" something else and you will get your way. Is it not enough to win? Do you really have to turn the knife on these people? If you want to fight for that childish reason, you will have a fight. A big one.
