Arrested: US Marine At Airport With Bomb-Making Materials

From the article..."A US Marine was arrested today at Logan International Airport after federal airport screeners discovered a gun, bomb-making materials, and ammunition in his checked baggage, State Police and Transportation Security Administration officials said.

Corporal Justin Reed, 22, of Jacksonville, N.C., was booked on US Airways Flight 877 to Charlotte, N.C., said TSA spokeswoman Ann Davis. She said Reed had arrived on a flight from Las Vegas this morning.

TSA screeners in Terminal B called State Police at 7:10 a.m. after a screen discovered the following items in his checked baggage: a locked handgun box containing a semi-automatic handgun, a fully loaded gun magazine, several boxes of 9 mm and 7.62 mm ammunition, three model rocket engines containing an explosive mixture, military pull-type fuses, switches, electronics kit boxes with various components, and a hand grenade fuse assembly with detonator.

Reed was charged with possession of an infernal machine and possession of a concealed weapon in a secure area of an airport. He was booked at the State Police barracks at Logan and held in lieu of $50,000 bail. He will be arraigned at East Boston Municipal Court on Tuesday.

Davis said it is legal to have a firearm in checked baggage but that it must be declared to security officials. The passenger in this case had not declared the weapon, she said. Davis said all checked baggage on domestic flights is required to be screened by TSA on originating flights.

Reed's bags had to be screened again at Logan because baggage handlers inadvertently routed them to baggage claim instead of onto his connecting flight to Charlotte. Typically bags are not rescreened during a layover, she said.

Davis said TSA was "actively investigating" why the gun and explosive materials were not detected during the screening in Las Vegas.

    • My cousin in the Marine Corps has brought home 9mm from Iraq while on tour and was able to get it passed security and everything, its not hard to do. Also he may be a Marine Explosive Ordnate Device (EOD) operator that could explain why he has those things. Also it states that he has the mixture for it, but it was never mixed together and that he had his hand gun which may off been Marine issued, secured in his bag. 7.62x39 are used by Ak-47 weapon choice of insurgents in the middle east. Any branch that is prior to deployment or coming back have been or are being trained to be familarized to use an Ak-47 as a last resort when out of 5.56mm ammuntion for their M4 or M16A2 service rifle, also known as a AR-15 to civilian buyers. Buts it's up to the courts to decided as well as being court marshelled in Judge Advocet General (JAG) court room, with the possibility of dishonorable discharge on his DD-214.

Are you actually trying to defend taking explosives (not just the rocket engines but also army fuses, live rounds, etc.) on a plane????

Years (many, I was CID of the airline) ago I worked for a large airline. The baggage departments can best be described as something approaching a cement mixer.

Shawn, it is probably the gun, several boxes of ammo, and the hand grenade fuse assembly...that sounds like a bit much to me...

No one should take anyting on an airplane that is considered dangerous. I would not want to be on a plane if someone had something that could be whatever they call it, "infernal device." I have never heard Infernal device before this article.

    • He should have checked these things for sure but there is nothing screaming terrorist. I have traveled with guns and ammunition in my checked luggage many times since 9-11. It's not a ton of paperwork either. Just check them in. The TSA people make sure they are secure and send them on their way. As for the rocket engines and hand grenade detonator they are pretty vague on details (engine size and such) but nothing sounds capable of endangering any commercial aircraft. And, if he was a "terrorist" he could definitely find better "tools" in N.C. after he arrived and would not risk transporting these insignificant items. It seems to me like a weak attempt by The Boston Globe to create "news" out of some 22 year old kids laps in judgment and an overanxious public eating it up.

    • I hope the next "terrorist" attack is on MONSANTO or the CFR.

It would be nice to see every single member of the CFR in flames screaming in agony.

Just the thought makes me smile = )

You don't have to worry about that ever happening. Terrorists are usually crazy and attack innocents who did them no harm. That nut case Tim McVeigh killed children and worker bees. Osama bombers kill innocent people shopping and just living their lilves who have never harmed Osama and his ilk.

Monsanto will be fine. The people who do these things are really totally crazy. Crazy and dangerous.

they had no business snooping in luggage. 911 was an inside job. It's actually tied into the war on drugs, in that they will use it to enact the police state and the removal of freedom.

Have any idea what would happen in a plane if three model rocket engines went off next to a box of ammo? Would you want the right to be on that flight and exercise your right to die screaming?

"Have any idea what would happen in a plane if three model rocket engines went off next to a box of ammo?"

Why would that happen??? Do you have any idea what would happen if an engine fell of the plane? If the pilots lost all hydraulics? If an electrical short started a fire? Or if the person seated next to you spontaneously combusted? These thing are just as likely....well....maybe not the spontaneous combustion. The fact that some journalist uses words like bomb, weapon, or infernal machine does not mean that there was any actual threat.

      chasingame,
spontaneous combustion notwithstanding, your other scenarios are just about equally probable and constant on all flights. Bringing rocket engines, grenade parts and ammo increases the odds of an incident markedly. You can douse yourself with gasoline and walk down the street just fine. You can light a cigar and walk down the street just fine. The probability you'll be hit by a car or stray meteorite are just as likely. But if you try to do both at the same time you're going to have a real bad day real quick.

"Bringing rocket engines, grenade parts and ammo increases the odds of an incident markedly"

Whatever....If this is what you believe then there is no point in having this discussion. I would like to see some proof however, that these things increase the odds of an incident at all, let alone "markedly". Although rarely, the examples I gave have at least happened (save one). I have never heard of model rocket engines, grenade parts or a box of ammo being transported causing a plane crash. At least not in this small of a quantity. Your fear is unfounded, irrational, and being fed by a sensational media just vying for an audience.

Did you think that one through at all or just react to something you don't quite grasp? I'm guessing there aren't a lot of chances of someone bringing rocket engines, ammo and grenade inerts on a flight - THANKFULLY. That may account for why you haven't heard of them bringing down a plane. The fact you would actually need that to happen before you would concede it is a dangerous situation does support your other assertion however. There is no point in having a conversation with someone not willing to see the forest for the trees or in this case not seeing forest fire for the flames.

I did think it through. I really do consider what I say before I say it in most cases. The real question is did you think that through??????? If that is your argument then riddle me this. How do any of our military aircraft make it from point A to point B without blowing up? Many have bombs and rockets on their wings and ammo in the hold. Hell in some cases they are loaded with 64+ paratroopers that have live hand grenades and automatic rifles full of ammunition! You are the one that needs to go for a walk in your proverbial "forest" but just remember you should not yell "fire" unless there are actually flames.

    • It seems quite odd that someone who is extensively trained in the use and safe handling of firearms, ammunition, and explosives would make such a bush-league mistake. Even a Marine would know that transporting such items on a civilian aircraft is a major no-no without filing at least a ton of paperwork beforehand...especially in this post-9/11 world.

      Odd. Very odd indeed.

My thoughts exactly. I'm very concerned that the next terrorist attack is going to end up being domestic. Some idiot somewhere is going to come to the conclusion that it would be the "patriotic" thing to do . . .

I would tell but then I would have to kill. I am pretty sure it was the same people that killed Kennedy and toppled the towers in New York. I believe it was the Bush Cartel. It is sexy how they always got a scapegoat though. Government.....government. No one was allowed near the Oklahoma bombing until evidence was clear....all they had to say was they believed their were more bombs inside. Look up old news footage and see the discrepancies in both bombing cases. The media was filled with confusing information. Kennedy wasn't killed by Bush but by apposition in the government. Still all the same.

It is so terrible that these things have happened. I saw a documentary on the Documentary Channel about how using drugs and other methods, psychologists could make an unstable person, like Sirhan Sirhan(sp?) kill Robert Kennedy. Sirhan has never remembered killing Robert Kennedy. And their hypothesis is that the not remembering is typical of certain psychological methods
      and drugs that are available.
One does not want to believe that our government or a rogue element in our government could ever do such a terrible thing. When JFK, Martin Luther, and Bobby Kennedy were killed, the dream of a better future ended for many people.
I remember my mother crying when Bobby Kennedy was killed. She was a big supporter of him and really wanted him to be president.

I would have trouble remembering killing someone that I didn't....no matter what I got for being a scapegoat. The government wants a few good people to blame for the next killings!....any takers?!?

    • I have used Logan many times & happened to fly & out & back just before 9/11. I definately noticed basic security issues & a very casual effort by the screeners. However, this was also the first time (that I noticed) my carry on luggage was swabbed to look for traces of explosives, I was told after inquiring. It's nice to see their system works when it's supposed to - even if it's by accident because your coworkers messed up. At least the screeners did theirs. So what's with Vegas missing this guy?

    • There was a report much derided in some corners of the country that right wing extremist groups and militia movements were actively seeking returning veterans for recruitment and that exploiting disenfranchised veterans for thier military experience represented serious potential for an increase in domestic terroism as was seen in the militia movement during the 1990's and the leftist anti war movement epitomized by groups such as the weather underground in the vietnam era.

Perhaps we should both remember that public defense is nonpartisan and that the largest terrorist attack before 9/11 occuring on our soil was perpetrated by an american under simmilar circumstances. Let us hope that this young marine wasn't among a second wave of such activities. Either way I think that its time we accepted a rational view on this topic and came to an understanding that extremism on any front ins't healthy for this nation and high grade explosives and assault weapons don't belong in the hands of criminals or extemist groups.
