40,000 Brits killed a year by booze - 5 TIMES official figure

Leading experts have said that as many as 40,000 drinkers are dying every year because the Government has utterly failed to deal with Britain's alcohol problem. And they say 24-hour drinking and the availability of cheap alcohol in supermarkets are to blame.

The official figures for alcohol-induced deaths in Britain in 8,000, however, this only relates to the cases where alcohol was directly mentioned on death certificates. The number of deaths caused by booze could be up to 5 times higher if cancers, high blood pressure leading to stroke and heart attacks, and violence - those directly caused by drink - are included.

MPs were warned that the number of alcohol deaths is comparable to the numbers dying as a result of obesity. And although 80,000 die every year through smoking, alcohol death rates are rising sharply and look likely to overtake smoking in coming years as more people quit.

Is this a sign that Britain's drinking culture is out of control? Or are 'experts' making a mountain out of a molehill?

    • Ever wondered why we drink (other than to help us do karaoke)?

This is what thinking would be like if every thought was mapped on a graph. An animated stream of consciousness takes us to the answer.

    • You can't blame 24-hour licenses and cheap booze for people's irresponsible drinking habits. That's just a way of deflecting blame for a deep seeded public health and social issue. But at the same time, this number would likely be even higher if they included all of the deaths caused by drink drivers. Rather than pointing fingers away from themselves, the government and the British public need to turn the finger at themselves and figure out a way to educate people to move away from binge drinking culture. And maybe using shock tactics and statistics aren't working anymore.
By the way, I wonder how many pregnancies are directly related to booze.
