Equality Bill to expose gender pay gap

A new bill aims to tackle discrimination against a range of groups including women, the elderly and those from lower social classes.

The Equality Bill will expose the gender pay gap, forcing many employers to reveal how much male staff are paid compared with their female colleagues. Despite the introduction of the Equal Pay Act 40 years ago, women in the UK still earn on average 23% less per hour than men.

The new bill will require companies employing at least 250 staff to publish their gender pay gaps by 2013. If too few have done so voluntarily, the government will use laws to make it happen.

The bill will also tackle social inequalities - ministers say the need for new measures is borne out by evidence showing that by the age of six, bright children from poor families are overtaken by less able children from wealthier homes and that people in deprived areas tend to suffer more from ill health - and age discrimination, the goal being to ban it completely.

Minister for Equality Harriet Harman pledged the bill would help to "narrow the gap between rich and poor and make Britain more equal".

    • wage gap!? IDK, isnt there laws to prevent this already?? If Im reading this right it more gives the govt the right to look into wages without anyone making complaints. That is well and good, but seems more like an amendment rather than a new law.

    • There are many innocent men have their life publicly ruined, separated from their children and sent to jail. Where is the equality? Where are men's rights?

Woman stabs her boyfriend with an 8" knife.....she gets arrested and first gets $2,500 bail by Mary Kellett and then $1,000 bail......then nothing ever heard about the case ever again.....By contrast less than a year earlier: ELLSWORTH — A former Bar Harbor man will spend four years in prison after pleading guilty Tuesday to an elevated aggravated assault charge for stabbing a female friend in April of 2007.
The prosecutor for the case, Assistant District Attorney Mary Kellett, recommended that the court impose an 18-year sentence, with all but seven years suspended and four years probation. http://current.com/items/89934421_sexual-discrimination-of-assistant-da-mary-kel...

Wife assaults Husband and cuts him to pieces. He then dies. So is she charged with murder? NO! Now if the situation was reversed and she had died he would have been arrested immediately and charged with murder its absolutely true that had the man slashed the women and she had died he would be in jail for life and we all would be hearing about another woman is avictim of violence.
