Sen. Specter switches parties: Democrats have 59 seats

“I’m not prepared to have my 29-year record in the United States Senate decided by the Pennsylvania Republican primary electorate, not prepared to have that record decided by that jury,” Mr. Specter declared in a rather defiant tone at a press conference Tuesday afternoon.
In a statement issued about noon as the Capitol was digesting the stunning turn of events, Mr. Specter said he had concluded that his party had moved too far to the right, a fact demonstrated by the migration of 200,000 Pennsylvania Republicans to the Democratic Party.
“I now find my political philosophy more in line with Democrats than Republicans,” Mr. Specter said in his statement, acknowledging that his decision was certain to disappoint colleagues and supporters.
If Al Franken prevails in his ongoing court case in Minnesota and Mr. Specter begins caucusing with Democrats, Democrats would have 60 votes and the ability to deny Republicans the chance to stall legislation. Mr. Specter was one of only three Republicans to support President Obama’s economic recovery legislation.

This is what i got from his speech-"I'm not switching parties because of principal, I'm switching so I can keep my job." He's not going to change. The only thing that will change is that little letter in parenthesis in front of his name.

Were it as simple as that, I would still expect the Dems not to abuse their power remotely as badly as the scorched earth policy of the majority formerly known as the Republican party.
It's not that simple at all. The Franken/Coleman hearing in the Minnesota Supreme Court is not scheduled until June (FUCKING TRAVESTY) and naturally Coleman, knowing he has not a chance in hell will appeal it to the US Supreme Court further delaying the Dem majority. Absolutely disgusting.
On top of the Coleman sacrifice play, the Dems have 10 blue dogs who are assuredly not going to provide an easy 60 on every issue. So put your guns away freaks, sit back, and relax. While not a solid lock majority, the adults are never the less, in charge.

Specter is positioning himself for 2010. He said that he put out polls in Penn. and he thinks " it's bleak for Republicans" there he doesn't think he can win as a Republican in Penn. I'm not saying this is wrong, I'm glad it's happening, I hope the Rep. party implodes, but lets not lose focus on the facts.

I don't see what the GOP's problem is. The way I see it is they left Specter he did not leave them. They have allowed their party to moved so far right that no true moderate can even relate to them any more. You can't blame Specter. Not only does he not agree with party policy any more but his chances of re-election with them stands at slim to none. I have a feeling this will not be the last time this happens either. I do hope however, that some officials shift from the GOP to independent. It would help break down party lines and get these guys working for the people again instead of working for their party.

OK, I expected nothing better from the lefties - personal attacks/smirks - and total disregard for the facts - typical. You guys are devoted followers of the idol - into the fire you will march after your messiah. Part of being an intelligent human being is always questionning the authority and what is around you. Reading one book does not make you an intellectual or a subject matter expert. Primitive - but what the hell - some are born to be followers - and some choose not to join the herd...

That would seem to be a personal attack (based upon heritage) and not a measured statement about policy.
Classic example of attacking others for one's own actions.

So I will excercise my Freedom of Speech and call him what I want to call him, regardless if you or anyone else finds this offensive. I simply don't give a flying ... for the political correctness agenda you are trying to push. Grow up and call things by their real names!!!

1) I have NEVER called GW "dubya". I normally don't even call him GW. I typically call him Bush.
2) "Hussein is his name - and one that in my view, fits him a lot better than the rest. "
This (#2) sentence proves that it is a personal attack, not a measured statement about policy.
Classic example of attacking others for one's own actions.
3) "...excercise my Freedom of Speech and call him what I want to call him,"
yes, you are free to violate your OWN stated claims. In fact, I appreciate that you are so quick to show your own intellectual dishonesty.
4) "...for the political correctness agenda.."
So far, I haven't commented on much else other than your intellectual dishonesty.

Cy - there is no political dishonesty in calling your president by his middle name. Obama, Hussein, Barack - what's the diff? You didnt call GW "dubya"? So what - the entire Bush-hating left did. I don't like your president - Hussein - for his past associations, for his Kenyan birth, for his socialistic views and actions, for his apologetic attitude towards the other countries, for his overtures of friendship towards our enemies, for his empty promises of hope and change - cliche's used to lure masses into voting for him. I don't trust that he means what is best for America. I don't agree with his views on what America should be. I love this country and see its good and bad - but infinitely more good. At least before Hussein was coronated. Now - I am not so sure.

Coscience? Hahaha. I have a bridge for sale in Brooklyn - c'mon boys and girls, the gullible ones - I'll sell it more than once with your crowd. Hahaha. "Crazy Republican"? OK, I will not dignify that with a reply - I don't agree - but what's the point of arguing with you? None. You will keep your liberal ideas - and I will stay with my conservative ones. To me, you are all a bunch of idealists - not footed in reality. Not that some of your ideas are necessarily bad - but they are unnatural for real world humans. I have what I consider to be a much more pragmatic view of politics, humans and human nature. A prediction I will make is this: by the end of his term (provided he makes it) - Hussein will be the least popular president in the last 100 years. He will have encroached on all the freedoms we hold dear as Americans. His true intentions will become clear and the damage he will have done will take decades to undo. Optimally, he will become a lame dick in 2010, when Congress reverts to a Republican majority. But given the public infatuation with their new messiah and the media-fed intoxication of the masses - who knows. If most of you guys and gals are somewhat moderate - you are already seeing the signs of the damage Hussein is causing or trying to cause. If you are hopeless left-wing-nuts - well, he can do no wrong - but you should drink the coolaid soon. But even if you are centrist - you have chosen to be blind to all the pre-election Hussein affiliations and deeds - and that means that you are going to be to blame for the dismantling of America. There will come a day when I say: "I told you so, but you didn't listen".

Live in different countries (not just visit). Finish Med School or any kind of grad school. Serve in a military. Speak a few more languages. Have a few kids. Etc, etc, etc.
You're a new grad - good for you. When reality we call "life" sets in, you will gradually gravitate towards the right - as you start earning a living (if you ever make any real money with the present king), have kids, watch them grow up into good human beings, etc.
You're being naive and primitive when you say stupid things. You haven't seen life yet, kid - let's hope you take its lessons well and mature into a wise man some day...

What have republicans done that impressed me? Well, they kept your and my ass safe from the same fanatics who blew up WTC and killed 3000 Americans. I successfully continued to operate my businesses without too much government involvement - paying taxes nad staying profitable is quite impressive for me. I don't need to be impressed by the government - I don't need to see them that much - they do their quiet work behind the scenes, they defend this country from its enemies and uphold the constitution, etc.
Now, things have turned upside down. Govt is everywhere and if not yet - it will be soon. Nationalize this and that, next to destroy is healthcare. All politicians are dirty - we need a reform. You were promissed a change - but getting worse than ever corruption and lies and muddy-water "transparency". Hussein sure sounds good - when the teleprompter is working. Convinced you that he's the man? His 100 days have convinced me that he is out to destroy the very same country you and I love - both internally and externally. Watch and see... Unchecked power is absolute power - and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Damage that is being done to America will be felt for decades... Yes - damage...

I'm going to be completely honest here, To all of the republicans/wing nuts who say this is just a political maneuver and has nothing to do with the utter incompetence of your party, I say bs. Why? because Specter is ranked(and this is a political fact) as the most liberal Republican in the Senate. It's only natural for him to change affiliation, as it was for Jim Jeffords. Obviously politics are involved, but I'm sure his conscience was at work here as well.
You can try to discredit Specter all you want, but it won't change the fact that he has switched party affiliation, and it won't change the fact that we are one step closer to a filibuster proof majority.
Progress marches on!

This just reinforces the fact the politicians favor what is popular over what is right. Despite what Specter says in the media, he is simply making his re-election bid for 2010 easier by jumping on the coat tails of Obama's momentum. The right may have shifted to the right, but the left has certainly shifted just as far to the left.
Specter had strong competition from his party in his 2004 re-election campaign. Given the momentum the left has, Specter is merely positioning himself into the popular side of things for job security.

WOW. This is huge. I'm no fan of either party, how could anyone be? But the republicans get what they deserve for allowing religion and right-wingers like Rush and Hannity to guide and control their party, and of course nobody will forget the Bush Jr. years and all the scum he had in that administration, and the Palin sideshow. It is time for change, but I surely don't think some of the goofs Obama has appointed is good change. Although there is just so much negative about this administration, as have been the last 11 administrations dating back to just after Kennedy was assassinated, here are the most troubling picks in this current one. Biden, Hillary, Geithner, Gates(A Bush handmedown)Holder, Solis, and Emanuel. The bad Bush list is even bigger so I don't wanna hear you libs whining.
