Check out the proposed new religious license plates for the state of Florida: The "Trinity" plate, proposed by Sen. Gary Siplin, D-Orlando, (see above).

Jesus is to be mass-produced, imprinted on metal, given a reflective coat and sold for money. His crown of thorns will lie just beneath the "FLORIDA" across the top of the plate; his outstretched arms will be truncated to the left and right by the tag numbers, so that one does not actually see the cross, the nails, the wounds — no, we would not have that! The words "SUNSHINE STATE" will be stamped across his unscathed, unlashed torso.

And yet, if even this censored Passion is still too strong for one's taste, the Legislature is producing an alternative "faith" plate as well, that one with a stained-glass window, a prettied-up cross and the slogan, "I Believe."

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Is this a good idea? Is this freedom of religion? Is this state endorsed religion? Is this just tacky?

    • Whos face is that?? Who is that guy?
Jesus did not look anything like that...

Killed him, stole his religion, (fucked it all up), painted him white ... sad shit... but one day we all gotta die and hopefully we all get the judgment we deserve.

& i think its funny that a lot of the people that pray to Jesus, hate arabs (wasnt he one of them?)... but not surprised, those same people have sex with little boys and support torture and wars and death penalty

    • If you want the plate, take the plate! If not, don't take that plate; It's not rocket science! Some of you people are freaking ridiculous! Moving on from the topic at hand...Why are you so offended and hateful towards Jesus? The world has a problem with Jesus & Christianity yet does not have a problem with any other faith/religion! Get a life! Sooner or later you will find out that JESUS is the only truth...I hope more sooner than later!

    • Will the Jewish cops pull people over for not having a license plate? Sorry, couldn't help myself. (If you need an explanation, Jews don't believe Jesus is the Savior.) Anyway, I think people should be able to have whatever they want on their cars. Just because you don't like or believe it doesn't mean you get to censor it. I would like to get a plate with Forrest Gump saying "Stupid is as stupid does". Oh, and they're trying to get pro-life plates too.

    • I am a Christian and I believe that the Atheist should be allowed to keep his license plate. This country is a country where freedom of expression is allowed. If you start taking it away from the people who are Atheist, Satanists, Humanists or whatever may offend a Christian, you better watch out for your rights to express your Christianity. Second, I do find the Jesus license plate to be very tacky and actually more offensive than the Atheist plate, mainly because my Jesus is no longer on the cross. If I ever see an Atheist license plate, my response will be to pray for the person who owns the car with that license plate.

    • If I thought religious or spiritual people were silly for some of the actions they take, I would be silly myself. Most of my family and friends are religious. It's still their right to do so. Maybe it does their minds some good to practice thier faith. . That' s something I can be thankfull for on Turkey Day. Although, they constantly worry about my mortal soul, they are respectful for my disbelief. They call it my lack of faith.
Maybe we could put a little more effort into seeing each others point of view. Who knows, we might even learn to get along with each other? Stranger things have certainly happened.

    • lmao! now I am not into organized religion but this is just sad.
Some examples: I love god so much I'm gonna have a peeling Virgin Mary sticker hanging cock-eyed from my bumper. /The new Jesus plates. / Or my fav, I love my country sooo much I'm going to desecrate the flag by hanging it off my truck like I'm the god-damned Coors American ambassador.

Oh well at least I know to avoid them by their cars.

    • brings to mind the New Testament story of Jesus picking up a whip and running the money changers out of the temple...

Clearly, Florida forgot to ask itself in advance of this ludicrous license plate..."What would Jesus do?"

      wtf is right...

I just don't get why people have to exhibit their beliefs "in your face". People are now putting "Memorials" on the backs of their autos. "In memory of my father-
      1940-2009".

This stuff should be personal and private. I put these license plates up there with the Velvet ELVIS pictures, lol. The State should stay out of religion. People are free to believe in what they believe even if that God is a Woman but....the only reason to put it on a bumper sticker is to say "Look at me, I am a good person". If you are a good person, as the Bible says: "it will be shown in the fruits of your labor". I take that as how you help the world not how you make yourself appear "self righteous "

I think they said the Atheist tag was sold a while back so it must already be approved. I hope in this day and time, we would not approve this. If Jesus exists , he will be saying" "those fools, I left all the instructions and they still don't get it! As he threw the money changers out so shall he throw out these "Money Changers trying to profit off a religion". Ewww

    • This is absolutely ridiculous. There is no line between church and state anymore. The only people that would buy this are the people that want to force it down your throat, and why would the state step forward to offer them something like this? And yeah, if you make one with Mr. Christianity on it, you damn well better make a whole series of them. I want to see one with the classic evolution picture on it. Or better yet, the flying spaghetti monster. Has Jesus been copyrighted yet?

There is one thing I noticed and that is that there is a Holy Bible beside every hospital bed and Man believes he evolves from him self and say thing like I will do this and I will fix that and my degree would etc, but the bible says in Psalm 49: 10For he seeth that wise men die, likewise the fool and the brutish person perish, and leave
their wealth to others. Man cant save himself from death ,but isn't smart enough to choose life ( Christ) so death will be his/her lot . Remember there is a beginning and a end to every story and you life choices predicates that. Be bless

    • I have a problem with this, first we will have a licence plate like this that displays a man being tortured to death, what's next, abu ghirab plates? Maybe I don't care to see a guy being tortured to death while I drive? And why does it always connect to Israel? They like wrath, vengeance, torture, war, famine curses, rituals, etc like their god.
      Religious people are FREAKS!

On the other hand, it would be good to keep vampires from tailgating.

no, b/c one is an independent expression of one person's view. The other is a state sanctioned, state mass produced view. The first should be covered by free speech, the 2nd should not.

This is not to say that one should not be able to have jesus on his license plates, only that it should not be a state sanctioned, state mass produced license plate.

I hope you understand the distinction.

    • It is a fitting design that Jesus is backed by the sun if you have ever watched "zeitgeist: the movie".

      http://www.zeitgeistmovie.com/

It says that many religions including Christianity are based on solar and celestial patterns. It states that Jesus and many other religious figures from other religions are based on the sun its self. The movie gets into some conspiracy stuff that gets overboard but the part on religion is very interesting.

As for Florida issuing these plates. As long as it stays a novelty plate who really cares. If it became standard issue I would have a problem with it. On that same note denying the guy in the post from pjacobs51 the right to have "ATHEIST" on his plate is B.S. It is typical though. Sell religion for money and deny others the right to display a contradictory view.

I don't know, I think it's nice for all the Christians out there to have one, but I'm not Christian, so where's my religion-based license plate, bitches!

Although, if I was a Christian, I think I would be kinda pissed about this. Using a religious symbol like that to make government money. Ta.

    • I think that if you do one religion, there has to be a liscense plate for every religion, or that would be reallly unfair. However, I would not put that on my car, because it is just going to far on the being a "good christian" thing, that point isn't to show off with the stuff you have, but the way you act based off of your religion choice.

No no, jesus was no smurf my friend. He was a sample as we can clearly see. A sample of what is to come. A beta version if you will. He shall return as a final version when he has been debugged and properly marketed. That is why I am coming out with a whole line of Jesus® Brand† products. You name it, Jesus is on it. Sheets, makeup, toilet seat covers, umbrellas, clocks, towels, shoes, nun-chucks, fire extinguishers, condoms, furniture, and pepper spray. Being a good christian isn't about following the teachings of christianity. It's about showing how much you love Jesus, and Jesus is all about name-ability and going green. So don't just be the forgettable christian at the rapture†, be a super christian and buy my gimmicky forceful shit.

Sorry, coming in late in the convo, but back to Delia's original comment....

Yeah, they always show him crucified, why not show him resurrected? With a big smile on his face? Why not show him happy?

Or is being a Christian about being miserable and in fear?

    • In a somewhat related story from Florida:

Steven Miles has tooled around Gainesville for 16 years with a license plate that says "ATHEIST."

To Miles, it is a form of self-expression, one he is happy to spend a few extra dollars every year to keep.

But to the state of Florida, the tag is "obscene or objectionable," according to a letter Miles received last month from the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. That puts the personalized plate on the department's blacklist, right up there with epithets, expletives and words describing certain body parts.

The state must use "great caution" in screening plates, the letter said. Medical reference books are consulted. Slang dictionaries, too.

"The plate must be canceled," it ordered. Officials want it mailed back.

Miles, 55, is incensed. Giving up his tag is out of the question.

"It's kind of disconcerting to know that the United States is based on freedom of expression, yet in actuality, it's quite restrictive," said Miles, an electrical engineer at the University of Florida.

He also is vice president of Atheists of Florida.

The review was prompted by a complaint signed by 10 people, said DMV spokesman Robert Sanchez.

A supervisor in the Bureau of Titles and Registrations in Tallahassee sided with the protesters and decided to yank the plate. Department officials routinely refuse to issue blatantly offensive personalized tags. But pulling them off the street is rare.

    • Well, unimatrix, you and I disagree on pretty much everything, but I will say that this is one of the dumbest ideas to ever come out of the Florida Senate. And the fact that it came from a democrat, traditionally a party hostile to religion and faith, is crazy! I don't believe that this should fly, as not only is it tacky as can be, but in the words of St. Francis of Assisi, "Preach the Gospel at all times. If necessary, use words."

As a Christian myself, I find it funny that anyone would want to invest in this. Belief should be enough without having to buy all sorts of crazy stuff to try to prove it. Who are they trying to prove it to anyway? It's what gives Christians a bad rap. We're not all like that, I promise.
