As the US reports its first known death from the global swine flu, the World Health Organization has raised its pandemic threat level. Several countries around the world have banned the import of US and Mexican pork products. We speak to professor and author Robert Wallace, who says the swine flu is partly the outcome of neoliberal policies that forced poorer countries to open their markets to poorly regulated Western agribusiness giants.

    • all skeptics and conspiracy theorists (and everyone else for that matter): please just cover your mouth when you cough, wash your hands frequently, and voluntarily quarantine yourself in your home if you (god forbid) get sick.
and believe or disbelieve whatever you wish.

let us not forget CAFTA (which was subverted by indigenous peoples but later renamed to the cuban something rather) which is the legal takeover of the central american resources for "free trade". we need to support fair trade ideals, not capitalistic ones.

    • I have to agree with this. Monsanto wouldn't be there either and their GM corn wouldn't have transgenically polluted all of the corn varieties of Mexico if not for NAFTA. We have done quite a bit to ruin the lives of farmers in Mexico and bring on more poverty, and now, diseases. There were supposed to be environmental standards attached to NAFTA. What environmental standards? The standard to pollute at will?

The Nations signed on to NAFTA and the WTO are currently blocked from enforcing some of their own environmental protection laws because they are viewed by the WTO world courts as being "barriers to free trade."
