Major League Baseball is investigating Alex Rodriguez's statements about his use of performance-enhancing drugs, increasing the pressure on the Yankees star ahead of an unflattering biography due out Monday.

The New York Times reported on its Web site Saturday that investigators have reached out to several of the All-Star third baseman's associates to examine whether he used drugs for a longer period than he has acknowledged.

Rodriguez admitted in February to using steroids only from 2001-03, but the New York Daily News reported Thursday that Sports Illustrated writer Selena Roberts' upcoming book "A-Rod" says he may have used as early as high school and after he was acquired by New York.

    • Panzer, good point.

Second, everybody should acknowledge that Manny is the greatest hitter of our generation. In close competition with Griffey. But definitely better. And he for sure earned his money this year much more than any other player. You can say what what you want about motivation, but if you look back at the past 15-20 years there is NOBODY that has been able to do what he does without 'HELP.'

Agree, but can we agree that he isn't the best player? Sure the long ball is his bread and butter, but uh... let's just say he is often "Manny being Manny". I'd put Griffey above him on overall baseball skills, not just hitting.

    • I got a huge problem with that 'fact-finding' coming from an Author who is releasing a book on A-Rod and conveniently releases this 'info' just before the book is about to hit stores. Author needs to have solid proof of both accusations. Let's wait and see shall we?

yeah seriously. what credibility does this author even have? asking jose canseco? while there is most likely some truth in this book, a lot of it is probably exaggerated cause that's what's gonna sell. she's only going after rodriguez because he's one of the most famous ball players but there are hundreds of others who did the exact same thing as him and they don't have tell-all books about them.

      Clips,

Did you have the same problem with the fact finding mission that has still yet come up with nothing on Barry Bonds. Those authors from the San Francisco Chronicle that wrote "The Game Of Shadows" never had any hard data of any kind that Bonds use steroids, but they were honored for their slander. There was no outrage at all.

Alex has much more dirt, plus a positive test on record. Bonds can't get a job, but Alex is still playing.

Why can't people be consistent in their criticism on the steroid issue, as oppose to just trying to single out & tar and feather the player(s) that they don't like.

Over 200 players have tested positive for performance enhancing drugs, according to the Mitchell report, and the only 2 who are not playing, by way of being denied opportunities are Roger Clemons and Barry Bonds.

Try telling me how fair that is.

No to Bonds, but I don't compare. That is like a judge saying court ' The last 18 defendants before you where guilty so to save some time for the court I will just go head and find you guilty' - sure you would not want that to happen to you if you ever where in a similar situation right (!?)
I am not defending, or endorsing steroid use, what I was questioning is the 'journalism' and the media frenzy when somebody releases a book. And I stand by that. (Free speech and all) ;)

    • They should investigate the claim he was tipping pitches to players on the opposing team during games. To me, that is worse than 'roiding.

    • Well, we all know what needs to happen. Steroids need to become mandatory so we can watch behemoth super athletes throw faster, hit longer, jump higher, and generally dominate the laws of physics. Now THAT'S entertainment!
