Teen Prescribed Antidepressants Kills Fifteen in a Drug Rage

"The truth is that antidepressants are the cause of these violent rampages, and suicide that occur worldwide. How many more of these incidents need to occur until people wake up to what is widely known about these deadly drugs."

Quote taken from blog

My question is why are children still being prescribed these drugs if we already know they are bad news..and why isn't the media in the USA doing its job and at least looking into why these stories are coming steadily? We don't hear a peep from Pharmaceutical Industry supported US TV/media. This is a nightmare that I have to keep posting these stories to help save people's lives from our friendly neighborhood newscasters.

    • i think that it's the person not the pill. i became depressed when i was a teen because of a couple tragic events, so i tried several medications. while they made me (more) moody or numb, i didn't cap anyone. ;) if a teen did do this i doubt that they were evaluated correctly in the first place.

Yes but your being ignornant to the fact the people on new medications need to be monitered aggeressively. Also anyone who needs to be put on antipsychotics, antidepressents, or SSRIs proably aren't in the best state anyway. I'm not saying that changing chemical levels during treatment did not help to trigger certain episodes, atleast i wouldn't without an unbias study, but unstable people are, guess what, UNSTABLE and unpredictable outcomes happen.

More Monitering and scientific evidence. Less angry family members waving flags.

Btw thousands of people a day reap the benifits of psychotropic drugs that prevent episodes.

    • I thought the US media was owned by Big Oil...Is it Big Pharma this week, and then Big Agriculture next week? Using a high profile crime to insinuate that an entire industry is out there trying to get you...I don't know...sounds a little paranoid. Maybe some of us could use some clozapine, olanzapine, or risperidone.

    • Maybe you should get an email-able links page and send it every Congress man or woman - every week until somebody puts somebody on it.

    • It's because pharmaceutical companys pay off a large portion of republicans and a couple democrats in congress. It's just like the gun industry, if we really want to end this crap we need to band together and just fight all these greedy assholes.

    • CarolynGillis you should be ashamed of yourself for attempting to mislead people into your agenda. I'm sorry if something bad happened to you involving medication, and after a stunt like this i sure hope something has and your not just a puppet for some company. I will be marking this as spam. Next time please point to an actual event, study, news article or atleast an unbiased website. This maybe user created news, but it's not out and out retric.

    • I had wellbutrin make me turn violent and worse than I was before taking them.

These pills are dangerous. Why not let your kid smoke a doobie, rather than giving them medicine that permanently alters the chemicals in their brains?

    • That is a single story.
I know many people are helped by drugs..that is not the point. The point is

US Media is supported by Big Pharm and hardly ever reports negatively on their supporters.
BBC reported many things five years before US did.

The ads that support our "news" are banned in all other countries in the world.

Our "news" is not real news because it is reduced to an Infomercials for Pharma..not as a source of interesting information we can trust.

    • thank you bombastinator, you are the voice of reason. any "news" from a blog should be taken with a grain of salt.
although I have never been presrcibed anything like what has been described here, I have a friend who was. She had become suicidal, violent, depressed and mean. The anti- depressents very likely saved her life and allowed her to become what she is today, the caring and kind person I had known.

    • Merk's Doctor Hit List

AN international drug company made a hit list of doctors who had to be "neutralised" or discredited because they criticised the anti-arthritis drug the pharmaceutical giant produced.

Staff at US company Merck &Co emailed each other about the list of doctors - mainly researchers and academics - who had been negative about the drug Vioxx or Merck and a recommended course of action.

The email, which came out in the Federal Court in Melbourne yesterday as part of a class action against the drug company, included the words "neutralise", "neutralised" or "discredit" against some of the doctors' names.

It is also alleged the company used intimidation tactics against critical researchers, including dropping hints it would stop funding to institutions and claims it interfered with academic appointments.

"We may need to seek them out and destroy them where they live," a Merck employee wrote, according to an email excerpt read to the court by Julian Burnside QC, acting for the plaintiff.

    • Hey I am not saying this is the cause..just tired of not hearing anything brought up about it...not sure of this specific posting at all...that's not the point.

Thanks Current for raising this up..I am sooo sick of posting this stuff and pray that President will make transparency in the FDA and Pharm his next focus..when he can..people are dying...
I would rather be enjoying life. It is scary for me to have to stand up to this huge force..thanks Current.

    • While I am not saying that psychotropic drugs aren't responsible for this it does raise some questions.

First, the use of medication implies that there is a preexisting emotional condition. So the question becomes were antidepressants the problem or would the person have gone on a rampage anyway.

I'm not aware of any study that ties chemical changes in the brain caused by antidepressants or withdrawl from them, to violent actions. Given that the ones funding this kind of study would be bigPharma, thats no surprise. As long as they have no information, they can go to court claming such.

I think the goverment should fund an independent study to see if there is a link simply because even if bigPharma studied it, it's unlikely the results would be unbiased.

    • There are 568 ratings for the drug: PROZAC in the Askapatient.com database.
The average rating for prozac is 3.4. out of 5
I am not a Scientologist by any means..I am just your average mother in a nice community in Southern Maine.. nice family,.who has seen many of these problems close up, sadly. I am not selling anything.
That argument comes up every time..it should not discredit this argument at all. I went through many problems before many of you becasue I am older.. so I hope that my bad experiences can help people avoid this wall of disinformation.

    • I would like to leave the decisions up to the family and the doctors, not the FDA, media, and government. It is sad knowing how much damage the FDA has caused while everybody blindly poors them more money to simply continue draining our country.

    • Okay, i soooo, hate copying and pasting my other responses but since it seems this is yet another biased article and I don't have the proper time to respond to it this other post will have to do.

"It's true that depression medications can increase psychosis, and depression, BUT ONLY if prescribed to the wrong people and without professional supervision.

Depression(and other mood disorders) are real issues that can't be solved just with meds or just lifestyle changes. In addition , if someone is being treated for depression, but actually has bi-polar disorder, an Anti-depressant will only worsen the situation without a mood-stabilizer to accompany it. This is common knowledge among professional, experienced psychiatrists.

It is a fact that drugs, in general, can be damaging, but without putting those facts into correct context they're useless, misleading and can be used for agendas like "all drugs are bad".

Some good alternatives to Prozac are Lamictal and Trileptal

      http://www.drugs.com/lamictal.html
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxcarbazepine

I'm not a doctor, however, I have experience as a person suffering from Bipolar disorder (not I or II but an unspecified spectrum version).

I'm not generally offended by much, but I must say this post does piss me off.

    • Regardless of the stories date or origin. The issue it brings up is the abuse of prescription drugs by doctors. We did a short film many years ago with NBC for an investigative report. Undercover patients where sent to psychiatrists and after 30 minutes they walked about with an average of 2 prescriptions (psychotropic med's) None of them said they where suicidal or 'depressed' rather they told the doctors they had a hard time with home work and social pressures. Scary when you see doctors take the easy way out by prescribing med's that quickly. We also know that some patients have reacted violently to some medications, that's documented. 1 child we sent in was a typical 8 year old boy who liked to play rough with his military toys and enjoyed his video games. He got 'Ritalin' prescribed after 40 minutes w/ the doctor and parents where told he had Attention Deficit Disorder. (shrug) Do you know what that can do to a kid !? IF that had been real, that kid could have started a very addictive drug at age 8, where do you think he would have been at age 14-15?
Yes, big Parma is responsible for pushing, but the 'dealer' is the doctor. There has to be better communication and education even for an MD. They don't set out to do harm, but with today's economy and many patients not having health insurance it's easier to give them a prescription and send them on their way.

      Wow that is impressive cfc.
There are good pieces out there but hard to find.
I think that Doc's at Stanford are being intimidated by these companies..we need to root out this evil..
I don't think all individual doctors or researchers or drug sales people are bad..our system is so screwed up though..it needs to be fixed.
In the same way I shop at Walmart sometimes..but don't like their policies..I shouldn't be punished for promoting bad labor policies.
Right now I and many others are probably afraid to speak up...they are so powerful. It is easier to just go along as we have for so long.

    • A couple of things I noticed:

This is not a news article, but actually a press release from something called stoprx.org which is apparently an anti pharmaceuticals lobby organization that seems to argue for use of alternative medicine such remedies as chiropractic instead

The article actually refers to the Tim Kretschmer shootings in Germany last month
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winnenden_school_shooting

      1.) not news
      2.) obfuscated agenda

I was unable to find anything in the time allowed but I'd bet money that if you scratch this group hard enough you'll find Scientology. One generally does on this issue.

Pharmaceutical companies don't prescribe drugs, doctors do. Blaming a pharmaceutical company for this violent act is like blaming a car manufacturer everytime one of their cars is involved in a fatal accident.

Why does everyone rush to pass blame with these situations? Who's to say these acts wouldn't have been committed regardless of medications?

These are some powerful drugs. If you have ever been on them you would understand. Then you have to look at the marketing techniques of the drug company's. I could explain it but if you really want to know you have to educate yourself before you put anything in your body.If some guy you know says hey try this it is good for you would you swallow it or would you ask what could happen to me if i take this?
