“Arm yourself….with knowledge!”

Captain’s Comments

Robberies have been the crimes of note this week. Yesterday on 4/27/09 at 9 AM a bank was robbed on the 200 block of Montgomery Street. Officer John Ferrando responded and took the report and coordinated with the Robbery Detail and communications. The 40 year old black male suspect was tracked onto Muni rail and arrested across the City within an hour. It was a great piece of coordination, determination and anticipation. Suspects have been known to use public transit to blend in with crowds, especially in the downtown area.

Later that same evening at 11:30 PM near St. Peter and Paul’s while walking home, a woman was surrounded by 5 young black men from Oakland, Antioch, Vallejo, Berkeley and Houston, Texas. The woman attempted to cross the street when she was grabbed and thrown to the ground. One of the men straddled her and pointed a handgun in her face demanding everything she had. The woman complied, fearing for her life. The men fled the scene in a large van or truck. A short while later, officers were called to respond to a similar armed robbery of a couple at Greenwich and Taylor Streets. Officers broadcast the descriptions, and a suspect vehicle was stopped at Pine and Van Ness with suspects aboard. Victims immediately identified the detained individuals as the same suspects who robbed them at gunpoint. Officer Kevin Worrell and Steve Gomez did an outstanding follow up investigation.

Situational awareness is key in situations where predators may strike. There are several ways to take precautions, such as shopping with a friend, holding keys, whistle or pepper spray as you go to and from your car or home, avoiding darkly lit areas, etc. Even then, it may be difficult to avoid a mob of individuals, bent on robbing, in cases such as these. In these types of cases, life is certainly much more valuable than property. Relinquish property and run away if possible, calling out for help. In no case, is it advisable to go along, either on foot or in a vehicle with an unknown suspect.
This past week we were called to two separate incidents at retail establishments near Union Square. In one case, at a jewelry store, three well dressed individuals entered and immediately pepper sprayed the employees, bound them and made off with a large amount of jewelry. The main suspect was described as a 20-30 year old Hispanic female, 5’, 100 pounds, wearing a khaki coat, black dress, high heels and black wig with a pony tail. She was accompanied by two Hispanic men, 5’4” wearing hats and a light colored sports coat and a 2 piece beige suit and gloves.
In the second case, a cookie shop was robbed by an individual with a handgun.
Remember to use safe practices going to and leaving your retail shops. Use two employees when at all possible. Use a drop safe during business hours or a bank service to pick up and drop off cash. Be aware of individuals “casing” your store or another store in the area. Communicate to neighboring businesses and the police if something seems out of the ordinary. If a crime occurs, remember to be the best witness possible. SAFE will be coordinating safety and business watch meetings in the area. For more information on Business Watch, Neighborhood Watch and tips on how to prevent burglary and robbery incidents, call SAFE at 553-1984 or go to www.sfsafe.org .
Telephone Extortion Scam
To date, we have received reports of dozen’s of phone call extortion attempts in the district over the past weeks. In each incident, between 10 AM and Noon, a male caller described as sounding ‘Asian with a raspy voice’ who makes a random call to the victim, saying that they will kidnap a family member unless the victim sends an amount of cash to a specified overseas location. We encourage reporting and specific details of similar calls in our efforts to investigate and put an end to the calls

      ==================================

      4/24/09 at 1AM on the 500 block of Broadway, Officers Matt Sullivan and Rene Nielsen were flagged down by an employee of an adult theatre who shouted “Those are the guys who stole my purse!” The officers saw the suspects driving by the theatre in a vehicle and quickly radioed for help. Officers Bushnell and Seavey responded and stopped the vehicle and detained the suspects and recovered the evidence and property, including the stolen purse and contents. The 2 suspects from Antioch and Pittsburgh were booked on felony charges and their vehicle was impounded.

      On 4/25/09 just after midnight, on the 400 block of Broadway, Officers Matt Seavey, Ed Carew and Michael Bushnell observed two young men standing against a wall, smoking marijuana. As the officers approached, one of the suspects threw the substance to the ground. A search revealed that he had a loaded concealed .22 caliber handgun in his pants pocket. The 20 year old white male from Concord was arrested for felony possession of a stolen, concealed and loaded handgun.

      We have been fortunate to have the Traffic Company Solo Motorcycle Violence Reduction Unit on hand to help deal with traffic related problems associated with the area. These officers do a great job of keeping traffic flowing and reduce the likelihood of street “Side Shows” “cruising” and vehicle to vehicle altercations. They provide a presence on the Broadway Corridor as well as on ancillary streets in the immediate neighborhood. If you notice, a majority of the problems and arrests occur after midnight and continue up to 3 AM. On Friday night 4/24/09, they made a combined 5 arrests, 53 citations issued and 6 vehicles towed.

      SAFE stands for Safety Awareness For Everyone and it is a valuable crime prevention organization. Grab and Run Shoplifters have been active of late, especially near our retail areas of the district. Plainclothes officers have made good arrests at locations where patterns of the thefts have occurred. Merchants can help yourselves by being alert, greeting patrons and by checking out the SAFE website for tips on loss prevention. SAFE can also do a security survey and report on businesses and homes. Check them out at www.sfsafe.org .
      Reward! Check out the www.sfgov.org/police website for rewards for Homicide information, Graffiti information and when giving tips on illegal guns in San Francisco. Rewards are enumerated from $250 for Graffiti to $1,000 for guns to and up to $10,000 or more for information leading to the arrest on some homicides.
