A 21-year-old man was charged with first-degree murder today after police said he snatched up his ex-girlfriend's 3-month-old son during a fight and then threw the baby from his car on an interstate highway.

The child's lifeless body was found near Interstate 275 north of downtown Tampa early today. The man, Richard A. McTear Jr., was captured several hours later. Deputies said he is not the child's father.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said McTear was arguing with his 17-year-old ex-girlfriend, Jasmine Bedwell, at her apartment when he began beating her and the child. She reported that McTear threw her son, Emanuel Wesley Murray, down on the concrete, then picked him up and fled in his Chevrolet Impala.

Jason Bird, a news photographer for WTVT-TV in Tampa, spotted the baby's body on his way to work at about 4:30 a.m.

"On the side of the road, I saw something out of the corner of my eye and at first I thought it was a baby doll, and then as I was thinking about it more I thought that was awfully big for a doll," Bird said in an interview on the station.

He turned around and went back to take another look.

"It was laying there with its eyes open," he said. "I couldn't look at it. It freaked me out, but fortunately law enforcement came right away."

"It's hard to find words to describe why someone would do this to a poor, defenseless child," sheriff's Maj. Harold Winsett told reporters at the scene.

    • No matter how much of a shit head one might be, one can always read an article of complete horror like this and wallow in self satisfaction, knowing "I might be a shit head, but I could never do THAT." MMmmmmmm. Wallow. Enjoy it. It won't last.

    • Wow. I almost threw up reading that. TO say that is sad, shocking, and horrifying is a severe understatement.

    • This guy and others like him need to be locked up in a room the size of a twin mattress and fed flavorless tofu for the rest of their lives. Don't use murder to justify murder, but don't give them an inch of freedom or joy. Honestly, I think the death penalty would be letting them off easy.

    • it's times like these that i have the most faith in an afterlife.
it's the only thing to give me comfort knowing this man will spend eternity in torturous hell.

    • I'm against the death penalty, but hearing shit like this makes me able to better understand why anyone is for it. I hope someone throws this guy from a speeding car.

    • Having worked in the Mental Health field, I will still ask...Why would You BOTHER trying to "treat" this type of behavior, other than making sure beyond doubt this person was never given the oppurtunity to skip their meds & hurt another human being, & I include prison guards as human(@ least compared to this scum)
The ONLY suitable "treatment" is to kill Him QUICKLY!

    • I'm not looking to justify the actions of these people, but could this man have been suffering from some kind of mental instability that is/was either reversible or treatable?

Who cares what his "issues" are. Of course he's a sick piece of shit, wasting yours and my oxygen. Some people should just be removed from the gene pool. Can you think of a better reason?

      Allow me to clarify.

If a man is crazy like Charles Manson and does something like this, then I think the death penalty should apply.

If a man is crazy as in constantly hearing voices that could be cleared up either with surgery or medication and he gives into those voices because none of those options were readily available to him, then I don't think the death penalty should apply.

Sadly, I think the problem can often be distinguishing between the two forms of crazy.
