A Vermont attorney who visited the Gaza Strip in February to investigate allegations of Israeli war crimes, including two Middlebury College-connected shooting deaths, rejected Israel’s recent exoneration of its conduct, saying the investigation was “lacking in credibility.”
In February, James Marc Leas of South Burlington traveled to Gaza as part of an eight-member legal delegation from the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) to investigate why Israel’s invasion had such a devastating impact on the civilian population.
On November 4, Israel invaded the Palestinian-controlled territory, which it claimed was necessary to halt Hamas rocket attacks on nearby Israeli towns and settlements. During the 22-day offensive, dubbed “Operation Cast Lead,” more than 1400 Palestinians were killed, including at least 288 children. More than 5300 were wounded. Two-thirds of the Palestinian casualties were noncombatants. Thirteen Israelis, including three civilians, died; another 518 Israelis were wounded.
Among the Palestinian civilians gunned down were two brothers of Amer Shurrab, a 2008 graduate of Middlebury College. Senator Patrick Leahy condemned the killings and called on the Israeli government to investigate.
According to a January 28 statement issued by Sen. Leahy, Shurrab’s father, Muhammed, and two brothers, Kassab, 28, and Ibrahim, 18, were driving home from their family farm on January 16 during a three-hour humanitarian ceasefire. The reprieve was to allow civilians to restock food, water and other provisions.
There was no indication that Shurrab’s family was traveling on a road considered unsafe to civilians. Nevertheless, members of the Israeli Defense Forces opened fire on the family’s vehicle in an unprovoked attack, wounding all three occupants.
Shurrab’s older brother, Kassab, leapt from the car in a panic and was shot 18 times. Shurrab’s father and other brother, Ibrahim, were also injured, but were prevented by Israeli soldiers from accessing medical attention, even though there was a hospital less than a mile away.
“Muhammed tried everything he could to save his son, Ibrahim, who was bleeding to death before his eyes,” Leahy said in his statement. The father called the Palestinian Red Crescent Societ..........

Obama Aide Puts Israel's Nukes in the Diplomatic Mix
Analysis by Helena Cobban
That would end a 40-year period in which Washington colluded with Israel in maintaining the fiction that Israel's nuclear weapons capabilities were unknown, and anyway should never be openly discussed.

Many Americans have been brainwashed by the propaganda that Palestinians are terrorists who threaten innocent Israel. These Americans will see the censorship as merely part of the necessary war on terror. They will accept the demonization of fellow citizens who report unpalatable facts about Israel and agree that such people should be punished for aiding and abetting terrorists.
A massive push is underway to criminalize criticism of Israel. American university professors have fallen victim to the well organized attempt to eliminate all criticism of Israel. Norman Finkelstein was denied tenure at a Catholic university because of the power of the Israel Lobby. Now the Israel Lobby is after University of California professor William Robinson. His crime: his course on global affairs included some reading assignments critical of Israel’s invasion of Gaza
The Israel Lobby apparently succeeded in convincing the Obama Justice (sic) Department that it is anti-semitic to accuse two Jewish AIPAC officials, Steven Rosen and Keith Weissman, of spying. The Israel Lobby succeeded in getting their trial delayed for four years, and now Attorney General Eric Holder has dropped charges. Yet, Larry Franklin, the DOD official accused of giving secret material to Rosen and Weissman, is serving 12 years and 7 months in prison.
The absurdity is extraordinary. The two Israeli agents are not guilty of receiving secrets, but the American official is guilty of giving secrets to them! If there is no spy in the story, how was Franklin convicted of giving secrets to a spy?
Criminalizing criticism of Israel destroys any hope of America having an independent foreign policy in the Middle East that serves American rather than Israeli interests. It eliminates any prospect of Americans escaping from their enculturation with Israeli propaganda.
To keep American minds captive, the Lobby is working to ban as anti-semitic any truth or disagreeable fact that pertains to Israel. It is permissible to criticize every other country in the world, but it is anti-semitic to criticize Israel, and anti-semitism will soon be a universal hate-crime in the Western world.
Most of Europe has already criminalized doubting the Holocaust. It is a crime even to confirm that it happened but to conclude that less than 6 million Jews were murdered.
With all that we have heard about the Holocaust, surely the facts must be there. Why does the Israel Lobby consider the case for the Holocaust to be so weak that it is impermissible to study the facts and to reach an independent conclusion?
Why is the Holocaust a subject that is off limits to examination? How could a case buttressed by hard facts possibly be endangered by kooks and anti-semites? Surely the case doesn’t need to be protected by thought control.
Imprisoning people for doubts is the antithesis of modernity.

What crap.
The Palestinians victims?
What crap. Do any of you people read history?
This is the same damn fight that's been going on since 1948 - the year I was born. The Palestinans are nothing more than the arabs that ran away when their "protectors", all 5 of them, invaded the new country of Israel. The Jews tried to get them to stay. They refused. They ran. So now you want to cry of over them? Knock yourself out.
I am serious tired of listening to this. The Jews want nothing more than to live in peace. They've already given up more than 1/2 of what they were promised. In return for this they've received never ending rockets against their civilian population.
This is not new. They've been doing it for 50 years. I invite anyone who thinks this is crap to go there and see for yourself. Save your tears and compassion for somebody that actually deserves it.
The Palestinians are nothing more than cowards that hide behind womens skirts. These are a people that have made no cultural advances since the dark ages. In more than 1,000 years of occupation they managed to build exactly 1 new city in the entire of Palestine.
Spare me your crap.

The failure of many media outlets to report these stories in detail is disturbing, at the very least. Many might argue that too many reporters emphasize the claims by some Muslim groups of profiling and targeting, while avoiding stories that may offend these same groups. Whatever the reason, these stories require more attention. Lives and policies can be changed as a result.
So far, only Time magazine's Scott MacLeod has noted a Jerusalem Post report on the IDF investigation. In doing so, MacLeod cast its findings in doubt without ever addressing its methodology. In short, the Post reported Feb. 16 that the world had been "duped" by claims that well over half the 1,300 Palestinian casualties in Gaza were civilians.
Col. Moshe Levi, the head of the IDF's Gaza Coordination and Liaison Administration (CLA), led an effort to positively identify all the dead. So far, "580 of these 1,200 [known dead] had been conclusively 'incriminated' as members of Hamas and other terrorist groups," the newspaper reported. Another 320 casualties haven't been identified, but were all men. The IDF estimates "two-thirds of them were terror operatives."
Something similar may have happened in the infamous Israeli bombing of a United Nations school building in Jabaliya. According to reports at the time, dozens of civilians huddled there for safety, but 42 were killed when the building was hit.
Now even the United Nations admits that's not true. No shell directly hit the school building. After UN officials insisted no rocket fire was coming from the school, it turns out two members of a Hamas mortar crew were among the dead.
According to the CLA investigation, a total of 12 people died at the school, nine of whom have been identified as Hamas operatives. According to the Post:
"From the beginning, Hamas claimed that 42 people were killed, but we could see from our surveillance that only a few stretchers were brought in to evacuate people," said Levi, adding that the CLA contacted the PA Health Ministry and asked for the names of the dead. "We were told that Hamas was hiding the number of dead."

The fact is that the conspiracy runs so deep, the "truth" is irrelevant. Perception is reality, and with nearly complete control over the US government through AIPAC and the media through ownership, the United States of Israel is absolutely infallible. Just turn on the "news" and see. Oppose them? That's just 'cause you're an anti-Semitic holocaust-denier...
On January 8th, 2009, the US Congress passed HR 34, which stated unanimous US support for Israel's massacre of innocent civilians. On March 5th, they passed HR 951 which condemns the [overblown] "rocket attacks" fired into Israel (apparently, the missiles fired into Gaza are ok). Why was this legislation necessary? I think we've got quite enough to worry about at home, than to sanction acts of terrorism.
Biden has been quoted as saying "I am a Zionist. You don't have to be a Jew to be a Zionist." Obama has openly declared support for Israel, stating he will stand "shoulder-to-shoulder" with them.
It's obvious Israel has usurped the state. At this point, I'm more curious to discover their underlying motivation, than to rout them out. It's interesting to watch Israel disseminate disinformation and provoke countries to start wars. It gives us something to watch on TV and follow in the news... at least until their conquests are complete and the state of Zion shines upon us all. Then I suppose those foreign spies and propagandists will need to find another project. - 2 years ago

It is absolutely right and proper that the actions of the Israeli forces should be continued to be examined in the media. Israel has now used up all its political capital and in the eyes of millions around the world is morally bankrupt. That they committed war crimes in Gaza is just one more item on the long list of injustices in the Israel / Palestinian conflict. Our only hope is that their friend and protector the USA finally sees the light, ignores the Israeli lobby and puts the plight of the Palestinians before its interests in the region. It is a vain hope but hope we must.

I don't know how Israel can say that they committed no crimes. Everyone seen what they did in Gaza. The murders they commited. the starvation, No electricity, No medical supplies being let in, The list could go on forever. And for America to supply them with weapons was so wrong , Made me very ashamed to be an American.. They all need to pay for the war crimes they committed. Just makes me sick that our country was so involved in the murders of children and so many other people...

Are Your Tax Dollars Going To Fund Human Rights Abuses in Gaza?
For months now I have been trying to make sense of what happened in Gaza. And yet I never know where to start or how to find the one story that says everything that needs to be said about what happened—and still is happening—to us.
I have many accounts to choose from and pictures as well. I am a photojournalist, you see, and I have been documenting in words and pictures the shortages of food and electricity that preceded the attack and continue to this day, and the many civilians who were killed, maimed, or made homeless during those terrible 22 days in late December and early January.

The father called the Palestinian Red Crescent Society and several news agencies, including the BBC, on his cellphone to plea for help, but Israeli IDF soldiers didn’t allow an ambulance onto the scene for 22 hours. By the time one arrived, Ibrahim was dead.
“This case cries out for an immediate, thorough, credible and transparent investigation by the Israeli government,” said Leahy, who’s known as an ardent supporter of Israel in the U.S. Senate. “Any individuals determined to have violated the laws of war should be prosecuted and appropriately punished.”
Shortly after the shootings, Leas’ NLG delegation traveled to Gaza from Egypt to interview eyewitnesses. Leas, who was profiled in the March 18 issue of Seven Days, says that while other human rights groups have visited Gaza and interviewed survivors, his was the only legal team that’s tried to document specific violations of international law. Leas and his team interviewed dozens of Palestinian civilians, including Shurrab’s father.
The group’s 37-page report, released April 2, cites extensive evidence that Israeli soldiers committed “significant violations” of international law. They include the deliberate targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure, the intentional denial of medical care to the wounded, willful attacks on civilian medical workers and the misuse of weapons, including some manufactured and supplied by the United States. - 2 years ago
